This is by far the best beer I have tasted in Germany. Surprising that I was unable to taste it at the brewery.(wrong time) It is remarkably precisely balanced malt to hops so the alcohol is hidden and it is overly drinkable. The aroma and flavor are extremely complex with hints of nuts and fruits. I am still detecting new flavors every bottle. And of course this beer comes in the famous bottle with the patented plop'.
It is remarkable to go through the brewery and watch them reuse the swing top bottles and the number of workers that it takes to keep the bottling plant working. If you get the chance please reserve a spot and take the tour it is well worth it.

330 ml swingtop bottle, bought in Germany. Golden colour, fizzy, large head. Fairly strong sweet and alcoholic aroma, notes of molasses and ammonium, hints of oak and fermenting fruits, not very pleasant. Flavour is malty, too alcoholic and sweet, low bitterness. Pale strong lagers rarely make me happy, and this one is no exception to the rule. Still drinkable - I’ve had worse.

11.2 oz bottle
Glassware: 12-oz footed pilsner/stange
Temp at Pour: 56.2 F
Look:
Clear medium copper topped by a 1" off-white head. The head dissipate to an almost nonexistent cover.
Smell:
Sweet and toasted grains. Bread. Dark raw honey. Hints of fruits like apples and raisins. No detectable hops.
Taste:
Follows the nose but with additional sweetness. Some hops show up to stop the beer from becoming cloying, but it finishes on a definite sweet note.
Feel:
Syrupy. Body is medium-light.
Overall:
While not a bad beer and definitely drinkable, this beer is not what I expect in a doppelbock. It is far too sweet and the color is too light. Maybe this should be in the standard bock category. The closest thing to it that I have had is Abita's Andygator.

Taster at Bittercreek. Clear golden, skin of head. Malty aroma, sweet, citrus. Taste circles back to the malts and rides them hard to the finish. Medium weight, Kind of sweet.

look: two finger bubbly white head which dissipates quick enough, beer is a totally clear light copper colour, lighter than maybe you would anticipate, slow moving carbonation in the beer.
smell: smells quite nice, lovely malt aroma, white and brown bread, caramel, toffee, hint of some dark fruit, fig, hint of some floral hops.
taste: not a bad strong lager, rich malt flavour, brown bread, red berry, fig, toffee, toasty, quite sweet, a hint of a floral character, light to medium bitterness on the finish, booze is not entirely hidden, not bad.
feel: medium bodied, light to medium carbonation, touch syrupy, sticky, hint of lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue, pretty drinkable
overall: probably not the best representation of the style, but a nice enough beer all the same.

Poured from a 330 mL bottle:
Pours a transparent amber color with a foamy, off-white head. Head retains around the circumference of the glass. Not much lacing at all.
Smell is sweet caramel and some yeast up front. I get a bit of malts and maybe some nuts too.
Taste is pretty much the same as the aroma, but a little bit watery. I’m getting more water and caramel than anything with yeast and malt showing up at the very end.
Feel is very light for a bock. Feels more like a 4% beer honestly. Pretty smooth and nice carbonation. I just wish it wasn’t so watery - that almost ruins the mouthfeel for me too.
Overall - certainly not bad but the beer itself wasn’t as aesthetically pleasing as the bottle itself was.

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass.
Deep shiny bronze colored appearance, a mix of brass deepy yellow, dark copper and red. Slight amounts of fine carbonation, and a real creamy three finger off white head, with super fine bubbles. Nice looking dollops of cream like lacing and real staying power. Lighter than most doppelbocks and really beautiful.
Aroma is on faint caramel, a bit pasty sensing yeast character too, which takes aways from some of the clean sensations on the nose. Hits a little mineral like as well too. Not much diversity but a solid simple aroma in bock land.
Palate seems to go an easier route. Light bodied almost helles like but also a touch wet in flavor and mouthfeel. Still some light caramel and a bit of grass like hop quality. Finish with more of a malt bitterness than hop bitterness strangely, almost a tannic dry grain aftertaste. Still some nice simple caramel like flavors, but also hits a bit unexpectedly bitter.
Not a bad doppel but not a great or really good one unfortunately either. Perhaps this is more in the lighter bock range that would make sense. Either way I'd score it the same.

Absolutely wonderful beer from one of the few northern German breweries that makes beer like the Bavarian's. On tap from a 30L barrel here at my house, lighter and crisp, perhaps a tiny bit less malty than one might expect from the style but upon warming does tend to fulfill. At 7% it's a very nice, smooth, malty easy drinking beer. Americans haven't quite learned how to make things like this yet, hoping we'll get there soon.

for something dubbed a winter beer, this is astonishingly light in color, perfectly clear deep golden, if this is a doppelbock as listed here, its the lightest one i can ever remember seeing in the flesh. high white head on it, airy looking and well refined beer, high shine. aroma and flavor are somewhat understated, especially on the grain side and especially compared with their other beers i have had before, the yeast also seems really light and mild to me. i think with winter in the name, i was looking for a bit more of an intense and malt driven brew, maybe a stronger and stronger flavored specimen, but once i figure this out, i like it a lot. the malt is fresh to me, particularly for a european import, and i can immediately appreciate the lager yeast, its full of minerals and earthiness and remains really pale through the whole drink, oddly light and dry for what its supposed to represent. i think this is more of an all season drink than something specific to winter, unless there is some german bock type and tradition i am not hip to yet, but this just seems like solid lager beer, without anything specific to tie it in to the winter season. that said, its flavorful, lightly bitter, well carbonated, real clean, and dangerously drinkable. good beer, a little confusing to me, but good.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a medium golden amber with a fine, one finger white head with good retention and thick lacing. Aroma of biscuit and mildly dry caramel malt, apple and mild nuttiness. Flavor is biscuit and dry caramel malt, brown bread, light dates and nuts; finishes light with a mild bitterness and husky grain. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A nicely presented bock that starts out pretty well with solid malt and bread flavors, but kind of thins out into the finish with grainy bitterness that somewhat overwhelms the bready malt. An authentic tasting, but rather light doppelbock.

Clear medium amber body under a coupla fingers of off-white foam... Lots of sweet warmth and gentle spice, toasty brown bread and molasses with clove and nutmeg... Light and smooth, little shellac across the palate lingers... Too easy to drink at 7.0% abv... 9/6/19 bottling...
