Review: 0,33l Flip top bottle of Flensburger Pilsener: ABV: 4.8% vol

A beer that I spotted for sale in my local Aldi. A cheapish 6 pack.

Just love the logo. Its a boat on the sea sailing past a lighthouse. All coming in a lovely brown stubby flip top bottle. Apparently Flensburger have the world’s biggest automated bottling line for flip top bottles!

On pour get a nice golden yellow coloured beer, with a smallish white head that develops. Doesn’t look particularly great, looks just ok in fact. All goes flat very quickly, little or no carbonation. Some light lacing.

A very piercing, and very citrusy smell. The malts are found on the nose, plus the hops and yeast. Ok smell.

Taste, oh a surprise….a very unique taste there, very yeasty. Also very bitter, very hoppy, fuck me.
No, this is fucking horrible, hopped to death. I found it too hard to drink.

Can feel the alcohol, but it is not nice, far too raw, sour and harsh on the tongue. Where are the malts?

Second bottle,
That taste, too hoppy, needs something to balance that strong sharp taste as it is all too assaulting on the taste buds.

No! not enjoyable at all. Sickly. Very bitter. Ok I know pilsners are a little hoppier than regular lagers, but fuck this shite!!! This hoppy style is meant to be a characteristic of a North German Pils, but as they say in England, this is not my cup of tea, definitely not!

330 ml bottle into lager glass, best before 5/10/2018. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, nuttiness, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.8%. Overall this was an excellent German pilsener! All around great robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink; with the modestly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Clean and nicely rich malts, balanced noble hops. Getting a bit of Munich malt character, but this was still very enjoyable and a spot on style example overall.

From a thick swing-top bottle, this brew has a golden hue and a frothy white head. The aroma is floral, with a distinct hop scent. The taste is dry and notably bitter. There is also a pale malt undertone that is part of the beer. Firm body and mostly clean. Straightforward beer.

Pours clear, gold in color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is honey, cereal and grass. Light bodied, sweet with high carbonation. Makes for a delicious and clean German pilsner...Could have several.

Bottle poured into shaker.

A- Pale straw, crystal clear. White head is bubbly, but doesn't hang very well.

S- Grassy, grainy. Bit of spicy hop aroma.

T- Grainy, bright grassy and spicy hops. Clean.

M- Body light, crisp finish. Slight linger of bitterness.

O- Pretty good classic pilsner. Easy drink, clean, crisp, and the noble hops are showcased.

Pours a very nice clear gold with a finger of white head. Smell is incredibly faint, malt and bread. Tastes of malt, bread, yeast, and citrus zest. Medium-light creamy body with medium carbonation. Overall it's a very refreshing pilsener.

$ 2.58 (including discount and tax)/11.2 oz flip top ($ 0.231/oz).
BB 1.30.18. Stored at beer fridge temperature, served at 50 degrees into a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – grainy, some bitterness.
Head – average (Maximum three cm, aggressive pour), white, creamy, average retention, diminishing to a three to four mm ring and a rocky partial layer.
Lacing – good. Broken frothy rings which meld into the ring.
Body – golden yellow, clear, effervescent.
Flavor – bitter and grainy
Palate – light, watery, lively carbonation.

This is a passable German pilsner, maybe a little too bitter for the malt, but that could be a result of the serving temperature. Still, I’m glad I tried it and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again.

Appearance 3.75, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3.75, Palate 4, Overall 3.75.

This is an old favourite of mine but I'd not drunk it in ages and so bought a crate of it from germany for old times sake.

Pours bright light gold, nice head. Looks great.

Herbal hops with slight lemon hints, underlying bready malts. Nice.

Taste brings some zest, hint of lime. The malt is bready and in the background but not hiding. mineral middle extending to the finish and a decent bitterness. Drying finish, mild bitterness lingers

High carb, medium body.

A good North German pils, I'd probably prefer more bitterness and a touch more malt flavour, but I doubt the extra bitternesss would get them any more sales :)
