What can I say? I really like this brew. I mean, I really like this. It looks, smells, tastes and feels fan-friggin-tastic. It's brewed old-school style. The Germans know what they're doing. You're not dealing with Nihilists here, okay man? The Dude abides.

12 oz ceramic topped bottle. Coppery body with beige foam. Crisp, toasty flavor with a touch of acidic bitterness at the finish. Terrific beer and fresh as a daisy.

From recorded notes

Appearance: Dark Brown but not black like most Dunkel's and partially translucent body. Two Fingers of carbonation that stayed but offered no lace.

Smell: Plum & Toffee with a slight note of well charred malt. It really needed warming to come out. Nothing bad, but nothing really standing out.

Taste: Toffee with mildly charred bread that turns to plum, a chewy almost neutral gum note or herbal gum note? I want to say licorice, but that doesn't seem right. Anyways, ends with more charred malt bitterness with earth and pine notes.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is good, as is the transitioning but the aftertaste has this weird neutral gum effect that seems to snap strangely at the top of the mouth and teeth that doesn't so much clean the palate as distracts from the previous bitter note.

Drinkability: It's easy enough to get down, but is a bit gassy, but nothing too big a concern. Medium body on this one and refreshing enough for spring I suppose.

Final Thoughts: That weird snap is the unique gimmick this beer brings to the table. I don't know what or how it is being accomplished, but this is the only beer I've had that has it. If you want something different this is your jam, and even if you don't, I wouldn't say it's that off the beaten path as it is certainly an approachable Dunkel.

Half liter draft pour at Bavarian Bierhaus Nashville. Bright, light brown with khaki colored head. The aroma is mild with toasted malt. The taste is bittersweet toasted malt and earthy noble hop flavored moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good. Perfect mix of toasty and bitter in this presentation.

Poured from a swing top bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear amber brown color with a small head of off-white foam. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time and leaving lots of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of a caramel and brown bread smell mixed with notes of toast and some molasses. Along with these aromas comes a little bit of a cocoa smell as well as a touch of harvest fruit.
Taste – The taste begins with a toasted bready flavor that is matched with some sweetness of molasses and plum. At the same time there is a touch of harvest fruits of apple and pear as well as a hint of smoke and nut. As the taste advances forward, the roastiness gets more intense, with some light coffee and cocoa joining in. All the while there is a light decrease in the sweet with some of the molasses fading. Toward the end a touch of caramel and char join in, leaving one with a nicely roasted, but rather easy natured taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium to light with a moderate carbonation level. For the style and the tastes, the feel is pretty decent and makes for an easy sipper.
Overall - A decent dunkel overall. Nothing super extraordinary, but enjoyable none the less.

From the beautiful shorty bottle in a snifter. This new to the area German pours
a brownish copper color with a nice head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring,
thin layer, and displays some very nice lacing. Nose of toasted malts, dark breaded malts,
and nutty malts with hints of toffee. Flavors nail it with toffee, dark breaded malts, caramel,
faint chocolate, and nutty malts with subtle hop notes. Mouth feel is medium, medium
light carbonation, smooth, and finishing nicely balanced and spot on for the style.

Overall, a SOLID brew

Cheers

This one pours a fairly dark golden brown, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like nutty malt, toffee, caramel, and toasted bread.

This feels just about spot on for the style. I’d maybe want a fuller finish, if I’m nitpicking or splitting hairs, but the malt character is spot on – nutty, caramelly, toasty, and just slightly floral.

This is medium bodied, with a crisp, clean finish, and a great drinkability.

This will always remain one of my favorite lager styles, and I will always seek out more versions of dunkels.

This was a very flavorful Dunkel...

It was a great looking, dark copperish colored brew with a malty scent light on raisins and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is light-bodied and crisp, with a very good flavor; truly I enjoyed.

poured from a 330mL swing-top bottle into a new glarus tall pilsner glass. pours out of the bottle like sun tea but gathers in the glass a light, see-through brown hue with over two fingers of light sandy colored foam. a dark bread maltiness on the nose and taste. as it warms it has a nuttiness to it as well as very light caramel and toffee. it finished with a touch of bitter rye bread. medium-full mouthfeel that’s appropriately carbed - that is to say not too much but not too little either. beyond solid, easy drinking dark lager.

Clear dark amber pour with visible carbonation, cream colored finger of foam. Smell is great: expressive yeast, euro caramel malt, brown bread with a hint of earth tones and raisin. Taste is the smell but as a nightmare: harsh yeast with earth, watery euro sweet malt, bread is stale and limited, yikes. Feel is watery and over carbonated, more grainy than it tastes.

Poured from 330mL swing-top brown bottle into a dimpled mug. Date on the back is "02.03.23", so I'm assuming that it's best by February or March of next year.

Appearance: medium amber hue with a totally clear body and a thin layer of ivory foam atop. Looks nice enough, though perhaps not as dunkel as I would have imagined.

Smell: caramelly and sweet, enough so to be almost cloying. There's some nice lager character here, but the aroma is a bit too sweet for me.

Taste: nutty and toasty malt character, with some nice caramel and a moderate sweetness. I like the character, and the sweetness is pared back from the aroma. Not bad.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent enough carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: a nicely refreshing dark lager, if a bit sweet and not as dark as I might like it to be.

Appearance: Clear, saddle brown with frothy white head, good retention.

Aroma: Malt forward. Bready, nutty, herbal/spicy.

Flavor & Aftertaste: Follows aroma. malty with bread and faint nutty notes. Subtle herbal/spicy hops. Restrained bitterness. Low sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied. Soft & creamy. Low carbonation.

Overall: Met my expectations of German brewing quality. A highly drinkable, low bitterness dark beer. Malt forward aroma and flavor profile. Easily drinkable any time of year. Solid choice for change of pace darker beer in summer because it still has a refreshing quality to it.

330 ml fliptop bottle, in Flensburg. Reddish brown colour, good and lasting creamy off-white head. Quite nice flowery and malty aroma. Caramel malts flavour. Minimal bitterness.
