Standard stout appearance. The nose is strong roasted dark malt with some sweet chocolate, bitter coffee, and okay/vanilla notes of whiskey barrel. Taste presents similar notes and flavors. Sweet chocolate and whiskey burn are stronger on the tongue than the nose. Medium bodied, a mild oiliness, well disguised alcohol presence. Pretty good, but I’m hoping it rounds out and presents a stronger body as it warms.

Pours black with half a finger of khaki foam. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, molasses, and caramel with heavy roasty and toasty malts underneath. It smells dense, dark, and heavy, fronted by coffee and chocolate. Whiskey and char shadow the malts, adding even more depth and darkness. Flavor profile is roasty and toasty malts with hearty coffee, chocolate, caramel, molasses, and whiskey inter-mixed. It's hearty stout featuring side shows by coffee and whiskey, but keeping the spotlight on the hearty underlying stout throughout the show. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a gritty start. It breaks down towards smooth at the end, but that initial grit lingers. Overall, big time stout with hearty coffee, chocolate, and whiskey throughout, landing this beer somewhere between breakfast, dessert, and post-dinner whiskey treat - a versatile drinking choice.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 375mL bottle.

A sip of this beer as a taster tasted good! I decided to purchase an $8 8oz of it and I was very disappointed that a mouthful of a taste of this beer had huge notes of the taste of a barrel-aged whiskey. I refused to drink a whole glass of it as each sip I cringed at the strong flavor.

Reviewing the 2019 release no. 4 at 12.9% ABV

Opaque ebony body with a one-finger thick light tan head, lasting. Rich cocoa and buttery chocolate scent; caramel. Decadent flavor notes of milk chocolate and cocoa; fine note of booziness cutting through the sweetness. Heavy body; chewy; plenty of alcohol heat; sensuous, velvety residual sugars coat the palate.

Some brewery's excel at tasty, balanced yet mind-blowing dark beers. River North is one of those artisans. The beer delivers excellent depth and character and coats the palate with luscious, lasting goodness. Very, very fine stuff...

thin. easy. whiskey. coffee. vanilla. hickory? very good. very easy to drink. slightly metallic smell and taste which is a tad off-putting but probably an effect due to a small brewery putting out a brew which sat on a shelf and then travelled a couple miles to its destination.....?

Absolutely incredible imperial stout. This is from a brewery I've never tried before. Only "2019" date printed on bottle. Pours a fairly thick black opaque color with a little tan head and small rings of lingering lacing. Smells incredible, deep rich mocha fudge chocolate, dark roast coffee, roasted nuts, caramel, malt and vanilla. Just a hint of whiskey and oak. Taste follows the nose, incredible depth and richness and the flavors opened up even more as the beer warmed. The whiskey and oak were more in the foreground which was a plus. It's a sipper but the very high ABV wasn't unapproachable. Smooth, luscious, almost chewy mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. An outstanding brew.

Appearance: Like the non-barrel-aged version, this one pours black as night(mare); spotty lacing along with some legs

Smell: A blend of Bourbon, chocolate, coffee along with a hint of vanilla

Taste: The Bourbon flavors emerge at the outset, with the roast and chocolate playing a supporting role; after the swallow, the coffee arrives with just a hint of vanilla in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: Just a terrific barrel-aged stout here; easily among my favorites from this brewery

River North Brewing’s Barrel Aged Nightmare Fuel 12.9% ABV. This Imperial Stout pours a deep dark mahogany brown color with a dark tan colored head that dissipates rather quickly leaving some lacing on the glass. The aroma is of fresh roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate with a big whiskey and vanilla hit coming out. The flavor is of fresh roasted coffee and chocolate the whiskey flavors really shine through in the way of vanilla and oak woodsy notes there’s some alcohol burn on the swallow but that’s to be expected from 12.9 percent abv. The mouthfeel is creamy and thick but not overly syrupy it does come off as drying but I think it’s from the alcohol content this is one of the best whiskey barrel aged stouts I’ve ever had. 9.5/10
