2018 vintage... Had the base, non-barrel aged beer earlier today... Night-black pour into an over-size snifter produced a finger of dark tan foam... Opaque body has a sliver of murky translucence around the edge and leaves cascading lace motes down the glass... Aromas pack lots of coffee and chocolate impressions with airs of oaky tannins and alcoholic vanilla vapors... On the sip, coffee, bourbon and its barrels, bittersweet chocolate malts, and syrupy molasses all come together... Body is full, a little sticky, and alternately sweet then bitter, with a trace of barrel wood dryness on the finish... This is a tremendous beer, but for my tastes, I enjoyed the non-barrel aged base beer better - that said, this is still a well-executed and elegantly crafted whiskey barrel stout... Recommended... 2018 bottling...

From a 375 ml bottle (2016 Vintage, Release 1) into a snifter.

A-The beer looks heavy and thick as it pours from the bottle. It is an attractive deep-brown color; not quite black. The head is quite short and short-lived. Just a collar of dark walnut foam remains. The beer looks still.

S-The aroma is very heavy on the coffee, but the smell is pleasant, deep, and rich; like a pot of fresh drip. There is a hint of smoke or char, as well as some black molasses sweetness. The barrel presence isn't very strong, but hints of raspy oak and vanilla creep out as the beer warms. Really inviting.

T-The taste tracks the smell with heavy doses of coffee and a nice, heavily roasted malt. There is some vanilla, a touch of chewy, dark caramel or burnt sugar flavor, and an raspy oaky note on the finish, but the beer is never boozy or too heavy on the whiskey notes. Alcohol is definitely present and this thing drinks warm, but it should at 14.8% ABV.

M-The body is substantial, but not thick or syrupy. A stiff bit of carbonation pricks the palate and then leaves.

O-A very nice coffee stout here. This beer is full-tilt on the coffee and not for the faint of heart. Oak notes and a high ABV make a good winter sipper. It reminds me a lot of BCBCS, but maybe a little wilder around the edges and with a bit less whiskey.

2016 vintage. Brand new beer.

a: very dark, almost perfectly black. Head is a tan color that wants to stick around. Nice alcohol legs.

s: Smells like KBS, like identical to KBS. Big, Mocha and bourbon notes with oak underlying. Coffee is still very dominant, but oak and bourbon fiddles nicely in the background.

t: Like KBS on steroids. Roasted coffee, nutty, oak, whiskey heat. More intense with the barrel and coffee right away. Mid palate is very balanced. On the way down is TONS of vanilla and sweet whiskey. Wow.

mf: Medium plus, nice viscosity. Not syrupy in any way. Very appropriate, and in no way "thin."

overall: Very nice, almost a clone of KBS, just a little more aggressive.
