Thanks, Nick!

Got a bottle of this and some other good stuff from Nick. Couldn’t really find a description except that it was a “Barrel-aged barleywine ale”. Well that is right up my alley. #BiL

Poured a very dark chestnut brown color with one finger of fizzy khaki tan head. Could see just a few bubbles creeping up along the sides of the glass. Decent spotty lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.50)

Smelled plum, boozy bourbon, leathery oak, fig, toffee, caramel, crayon, vanilla and bug spray (??). Much better smell out of the bottle. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted better than the nose. In order got plum, leathery oak, fig, toffee, boozy bourbon, lingering peppery/cinnamon spice, caramel, banana, clove and vanilla. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. (Feel - 4.50)

This was a really good BBA barleywine. Glad I got to try it. #BiL (Overall - 4.25)

Dark opaque brown pour with a tan cap that fades into a thick collar. Big barley leading barrel, especially oak, in nose with slight oxidation. Taste adds a bevy of dark fruit, especially fig, with light toasted caramel, but still has more of a rustic barley and barrel complexion at the forefront. Wetter than expected despite barley graininess, barrel is not very warm. The wife liked it

Pours a burgundy-brown with a fogginess to the transparency. Head is two fingers of khaki foam with quick dissipation. Aroma is caramel, fig, toffee, and raisins, with mild earthy and strong toasty bread behind. Barrel brings with it a little firmness to the aroma, without pushing too much heat. It's neither sweet nor bitter, striking a mild balance despite its ABV. Flavor profile is caramel, toffee, molasses, raisins, and earthy, toasty bread. Bourbon and barrel is a little more forward here than the aroma, but still doesn't bring any excessive heat to the palate. Very mild dark fruits and sticky resin hops arrive within the flavor profile as the beer warms towards room temperature. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a nearing still effervescence. Outside of mild silt at the onset of each sip, the texture is smooth. Overall, a caramely, fig bomb with some late sticky hops. Never hot, striking a good balance for a BA barleywine.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 375mL bottle. Reviewed from notes. Release 1, vintage 2021.

Darker in appearance compared to non-BA barleywine. Smells of sweet caramel. Bourbon barrel age, malty, boozy, and caramel notes. Mouthfeel has a bite to it due to the ABV level I imagine and leaves a sticky residue on your lips.

Excited to add this beer to the BA DB! This is a 2021 vintage from release 1 from a batch of 99 cases.
This beer is in a 375 ml bottle and is being poured at cellar temp into my snifter.
The beer pours a clear mahogany color with some deeper ruby highlights on the edges of my glass.
A fizzy khaki colored head of .5 cm foams up and is gone almost completely by the time I get a picture of the glass! Higher ABV, so this is passable, but it is rapid.
Aroma is malt forward with caramel and brown sugar mixing with some fusol alcohol and a little bit of a fig note. Not any real hop presence here.
First sip reveals very fine tingly carbonation wrapped in a fairly thick and sticky textured package. The beer coats my palate and leaves sticky residue on my lips. Feels like a nice big boozy barleywine!
The flavor is sweet and malty up front with caramel, brown sugar, a good dose of bourbon and hints of vanilla. This moves to a bit of black pepper and bitey alcohol. The booze lingers a bit on the swallow with some general bitter note and warmth down my gullet.
No hop character here, but this is a sipper. I wonder what this would be like in 365 days? Its pretty nice and I enjoy it now, but the fusol booze is a little young. Worth a buy if you like big boozy barleywines!
