From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #68 (Spetember 2012):

LOOK: Brilliant golden hue, killer froth

SMELL: Fresh herbs, tropical fruit, exotic spice, yeast, biscuity, dried grass, fume of alcohol, spicy

TASTE: Gentle smoothness, creamy, noticeable bitter, fresh black tea, grass, passion fruit, some spice, mild alcohol, hint of spice, walnuts, yeast, exceptionally long drawn out hoppiness, dry finish

A crazy mashup of styles results in brewers wanting to tackle it, River North nails what it is supposed to be. Belgian character first and foremost but bitterness nails it without ever letting go of what they yeast did. Very mellow alcohol for its size, any true hop head shouldn’t be afraid to climb this IBU ladened mountain.

STYLE: Belgian IPA
ABV: 9.0%

22oz into a pint

A - Pours a deep opaque orange color. Pearly white head that doesn't really build, just sits there as a film.

S - Very strong citrus notes, seemingly combining a floral hop character and what I think is the belgian yeast coming through. A little phenols are there.

T - Starts off smooth and sweet, going with pilsner and piles of 2row malts. Mid-stream the yeast takes over - the esters and white peppers rule the day. There are some citrus hops as well, a nice compliment. Finishes with a bit of sweetness and an increasing white pepper base.

M - Thick and creamy, carbonation is strong but just not enough to convince me its balanced or too in line with the nature of other belgians. alcohol warmth grows strong as the beer goes along.

O/D - A very solid belgian IPA. Hits all the main points for this non-traiditional style. A little bit boozy. A bit hefty and filling. The most notable flavors are just a little too muddled to consider this my favoriate BIPA, but its sure up there. I"ll have to try more beers from this brewery.

Well, the name is a mouthfull, and so is the beer.

Pours a nice solid golden color, nice billowing head. Some rocks. Lacing is great

Hops and yeast dominate the nose. White pepper, coriander and clove. Followed closely and powerfully by the hops. Citrus and tropical.

One thing I don't really love about B-IPAs is the emphasis on the B. This one does not fit that complaint. The Belgian flavors/spices (coriander, clove, bubblegum and white pepper) are there and provide a good flavor profile The soft biscuit and hops are what makes this beer really good. Yes, it's hoppy, buth combo of Belgian and American flavors is great.

Nice feel on it. Bitey, but not boozey. A really good beer

Pours a clear amber with a brownish tinge. Thin but long-lasting cap of foam. Nicely tingly in the mouth. A sweet aroma with something like geraniums.

An intriguing mix of flavors. The surprisingly strong clove flavor is the least pleasant of them. Better is the touch of cedar and mango nectar.

The yeasty dryness comes through midway. Bitterish finish, though less bitter than some of these Belgian hybrids I've been trying lately. Minty chewing gum plus a lot of pepper and pencil shavings. Orange with some orange peel. Still sweet in spite of the yeasty taste.

Quite sippable and you forget it's as strong as a summer white wine. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Wilbur's Total Beverage in Fort Collins.

A: Cloudy deep copper; tons of head. Looks great.
S: Belgian yeast and hops...lemony citrus and other fruits, also some serious earthy smells.
T: Slightly sweet, not quite as much as a real Belgian IPA. A lot of the flavors I don't like as much are more prevalent in this beer, and less apparent are the ones I prefer. I don't get the malty sweetness I would like, and the bitterness hangs on for too long. Kind of bites the tongue.
M: Smooth, slightly viscous and coating. Unexpected.
O: The best examples of a Belgian IPA have sweetness in a good way and this one just goes a little off the mark for me. The off flavors are intense and last way too long. Don't get me wrong, it's a good beer and is very drinkable. Just not my thing. Definitely an interesting take on a belgian style.

One of the my favorite double IPAs. The belgian yeast strain is a great twist on this classic.

Appearance is clear light golden, with a small, thick bubbled head that dissappeared immediately. Aroma is dominated by fruity Belgian yeast. For a double IPA the hop aroma is almost nonexistent, with a slight grapefruit and resin. Taste is a light malt that gives way to a strong, tart grapefruit taste, with hints of apple and pear from the yeast. Mouthfeel is light with low carbonation and a slight solventy alcohol. Finishes with a strong lingering bitterness and grapefruit flavor. Overall this is average at best. Perceived bitterness much lower than the 130 on the bottle would suggest

22oz bottle obtained in Nederland Co.

Pours hazy gold with plenty of dense, whipped head of white. A partial skim coat sustains throughout the glass with plenty of torn lacework.

Aromatics lead off with candied citrus fruit and pine. Apples, cloves and light bubblegum follow through. Orangey with pine-studded apples.

Medium bodied with a sticky, tacky mouthfeel.

Lush, sugar-dusted fruit starts the palate. Clove-spiked apples and some sweet malt follow through.

Finishes with lingering sappy fruit, bitterness to balance, and a mild warmth.

Very nice, but a bit on the sweet side. Dry it up and we have a fantastic beer.

Very cloudy honey/apricot colored brew with some small yeasty bits slowly sinking and a very nice off-white head that retains very well , producing some decent lacing.
The aroma is mellow but complex with caramel malt, citrus, pine resin, notes of spices and tropical fruit.
The taste is along the same lines but somewhat more assertive. There is so much going on here that it's hard to describe. Up front there is a brief caramel sweetness quickly overtaken by a blast of piney/citrus hops and a spicy, peppery background - coriander, cloves, pepper - all blending in with what seems to be notes of pineapple, mango, quava, who knows what else? The finish brings back a lingering blast of pine resin and spice along with some pleasant alcohol warmth. This is really a winter IPA. For several reasons this one should be enjoyed slowly.
The mouthfeel is amazing for an IPA, medium to full bodied with an almost oily texture.
Overall, This was a very interesting and enjoyable brew, not for the faint hearted lager lovers.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden orange with a medium meringue white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is some fruit, funky earthy yeast, and some light metallic hops.

The flavor is sweet sugary bready malts with some tropical fruits and earthy yeast and a good sized bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a pretty good Belgian IPA. Not my favorite style but this has decent balance of funk, fruit and bitterness.
