One of the my favorite double IPAs. The belgian yeast strain is a great twist on this classic.

Very well balanced for such a high abv beer.

Sourced a bottle in Denver, November, 2014.

App: Pours an almost orange-gold color, with minimal head that fades quickly. Opaque, with little effervescence.

Sm: Grapefruit, lemon thyme, followed by sweet tropical flavors like papaya.

Taste: Immediate sweetness dissolves into sticky, floral hops notes. Hops are balanced but definitely less forward than would be expected in a traditional double IPA. The resulting warmth from the relatively high alcohol (9.0%) is nicely balanced by tart, citrusy notes that could be the result of the Belgian yeast? It's almost IPA cross-bred with a saison - a great beer for a warm fall day.

An interesting beer when you're not sure you're ready for a palate-wrecking double IPA, but you want something that has floral hop notes to it. Would match well with Korean or Indian food (though I'd steer away from truly spicy stuff, given the ABV).

22oz bottle obtained in Nederland Co.

Pours hazy gold with plenty of dense, whipped head of white. A partial skim coat sustains throughout the glass with plenty of torn lacework.

Aromatics lead off with candied citrus fruit and pine. Apples, cloves and light bubblegum follow through. Orangey with pine-studded apples.

Medium bodied with a sticky, tacky mouthfeel.

Lush, sugar-dusted fruit starts the palate. Clove-spiked apples and some sweet malt follow through.

Finishes with lingering sappy fruit, bitterness to balance, and a mild warmth.

Very nice, but a bit on the sweet side. Dry it up and we have a fantastic beer.

River North Brewery Hoppenberg Uncertainty Principle Belgian-style Double India Pale Ale: That is a whopper of a name, and given I was a physics major I like the inside play on words. But how about the beer? The Belgian style IPA mash up is a tricky style, and I have had few the really come out well. River North's Uncertianty Principle may not fit the style perfectly, but it is a luscious beer not to be missed. All aspects of this brew are outstanding. A must try...
