BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Garage Project
New Zealand (Aotearoa) | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The arrival of hops to the brewing scene in England in the 1500s led to a moral panic, hops were described as "a Wicked, & Pernicious Weed", feared to bring the downfall of civilized society. Thankfully, they were right.

Pernicious Weed is a celebration of the NZ-developed hop varieties Nelson Sauvin and Rakau. Huge grapefruit flavour in a worryingly-drinkable strong IPA.

Clearish golden colour with a creamy, white head. Good head retention.

Orange and chilli aroma. Really intriguing. Some malt. Nice.

Sweet malt and plenty of bitterness. Nice orange hop notes. Lacking a deep hop flavour.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A good IPA. A little unbalanced but it works reasonably well.

Pours dark amber with a fading head.
Nose shows rich sweet syrupy malt along with resionous and fruity hops. Marmalade, peach and plum. Nice
Very aggressive flavours. Piny and resinous hops dominate along with a massive bitterness. Lots of malt too, but the bitterness wins out for sure.
Carbonation could be a bit higher.

I know it's boring to score them all the same but that's just the way it is.

The colour is orange-amber; the liquid is hazy. The two finger off-white airy head sinks down to a thick lid leaving some lacing.

The smell got distinct notes of new world hops: Citric peels, resin, rubber, lemon juice and orange marmalade.

The taste is aggressively bitter with lots of tart-bitter citric notes. Thick marmalade sweetness and slowly growing warm alcohol. Medium to full body. The aftertaste is hoppy with distinct alcohol, lemon/lime, sour fruit candy and a touch of oil paint. The finish is bitter with some alcohol.

The carbonation is mid-strong: the few mid-sized bubbles are short-lived. The liquid is thick and somewhat sticky.

A very bitter IPA, almost a DIPA, with not enough aroma hops in the finish.
