A nice, if slightly out of style. version of a Berliner Weisse. Light, tart, and refreshingly lemony, this is a perfect lawnmower beer for the hot South. A little softer than some, and not quite as deeply tart as others, but the clean, fresh, lemon flavors make it a pleasure. Certainly no flavored syrups recommended with this one!

22oz bottle. No bottling date but this has only been available for the past month (7/15). Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours a hazy straw yellow with a two finger cap of white froth. The head soon settles, leaving a broken halo. Only a few small wisps of lace.

Smells sour and musty. Something is off here. There is some mildew and a very unfortunate manure note. This is seriously the first beer I can recall needing to avoid smelling while drinking.

Luckily the flavor is much cleaner than the aroma. Lightly sour, funky, wheat, hay, vague fruit pulp and a little earthy must. Quite refreshing and easy to drink provided I avoid inhaling while sipping.

Medium light body with soft carbonation. A bit more heft than typical for the style. Aftertaste has hints of funky, slightly soured fruit and wet hay.

General Joe's tastes pretty nice but is hands down the worst smelling beer I can recall. It's a good base that makes me want to get back to the brewery to try the fruit variants.

Maybe I missed it but the bottle doesn't seem to clearly indicate that this is a Berliner which led to some confusion initially but once that was figured out it was a solid Berliner. Not one I'd necessarily seek out again but one I'd be happy to drink, especially if the weather was more appropriate.

At the brewery. 6 oz sample poured into a plastic cup.

A - Darker than most berliners I've had, which isn't terribly surprising given how much higher gravity this beer is for the style. Not displeasing. One finger of slightly opaque head. Ultimately effervescent and alluring.

S - Nice amount of lacto on the nose, complemented by a non-insubstantial malt presence.

T - As the appearance and aroma presaged, this is quite hefty for a berliner-weisse. That said, it's quite good. The tartness almost plays second fiddle to the body of the beer, but this isn't a bad thing.

M - Nice medium-high carbonation, offsets what might have otherwise been too heavy a mouthfeel.

O - Overall, I preferred the variations on this base beer that were offered at the brewery (but are not listed on BA). However, as was pointed out to me, this is actually quite befitting of a berliner-weisse, a base beer by nature. Ultimately very solid, though it took some getting used to.

Very solid tart not too sour (but plenty sour) berliner. The lacto on the nose is funky and very good. I really am happy they opened in my state!!

Poured from the tap into a tulip glass. The appearance is a clear golden yellow with a small white head. The aroma is floral hops. The taste is sour grapes or some other fruit. A below average beer.
