BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Burnt Hickory Brewery
Georgia, United States
burnthickorybrewery.com

Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named of the original name of the city of Kennesaw (our home town), Big Shanty is not a little beer by any means. Made with real graham cracker crumbs and honey, itʼs sweetness is only challenged by itʼs strong roast and hop bitterness. A world class stout with an extreme amount of local flavor.

L - Pours a deep black, not motor oil thick with a light tan one finger head. The head is really impressive, it just sticks around and leaves some nice lacing.

S - The nose is a bit muted to me. Not really much going on except for some roasted malts and a bit of sweetness, from the honey I guess.

T - Good roasted malts notes along with some sweet honey and faint graham cracker that develops into a light burnt black coffee finish.

F - Medium bodied and low carbonation. Really smooth body and oh so drinkable.

O - May'be I had a bad bottle? The reviews seem to give high praise. but i'm just not getting the graham cracker, which is the selling point of the beer to me, IMO.

Bottled on Dec 24, 2014 and drinking on Jan 18, 2015. Poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Dark coffee appearance with dark head that doesn't linger very long
Smell: Like cinnamon/gingerbread/graham crackers
Taste: Just like the way it smells at the front. To me, the gingerbready spices compliment the otherwise off-putting ABV at the end, giving it a pleasant sort of "heat"
Mouthfeel: Thick, smooth, low carbonation
Overall: Very pleasant and unique flavors that actually live up to its name, unlike other beers of this type

Bottled on 4/1/15

A: thick black opaque brew with 2 fingers of thick creamy golden brown head. Nice lacing and excellent head retention. Beautiful

S: strong aroma of sasparilla, molasses with hints of milk chocolate.

T: sweet sasparilla, root beer like flavor up front with a little burnt toffee and milk chocolate in the finish. Hints of graham crackers mixed into the finish as well. Sweet candy like brew with a touch of dark chocolate bitterness in the end.

F: velvet smooth mouth feel with moderate carbonation.

O: excellent beer. I wish I had more of these. Nice dessert beer with lots of sweetness up front and a mellow evolving flavor as it warms.

A bomber with a handwritten 5-12 on the side which I'm going to assume is the bottle date. I'm serving this in a 12oz. snifter for the review.

Look- Pours a dark brown with medium viscosity and a finger of tan foam. It slowly settles leaving ample lacing.

Smell- Oatmeal raisin cookie dough, cinnamon, bakers chocolate.

Taste- It's like eating a cinnamon graham sprinkled with a few raisins and chocolate chips.

Feel- Slick and slightly oily, but on the thinner side more reminiscent of a porter.

Overall- A pleasant liquid dessert that tastes like a mix of a cinnamon graham cracker/oatmeal raisin cookie dipped in chocolate. Very easy drinking for 9% to boot! The rather thin body was the only very minor disappointment with this beer. It's definitely worth a look.

16oz pours at Loco Willy's (Marietta, GA). Served in a pint glass.

Appears deep brown with chestnut edges and about a quarter finger pale tan head. Sheet of lacing nearly coat the glass.

Smells of hot cocoa, graham and vanilla with a wisp of alcohol.

Oh, that's nice! Spiced graham cracker, cocoa, cinnamon, toffee and vanilla. It's like a chocolate graham cracker malt. Enough going on to keep the near 10% abv from seeming like much at all. Quite tasty.

Moderaty heavy feel with just enough carbonation to make it dance on the tongue for a bit before settling into a long sweet grahamy finish.

Burnt Hickory can't possibly get to bottling this fast enough for my liking! It really delivers on the graham cracker, similar but not quite as well as Southern Tier delivers on a flavor with Choklat. A well done original flavor profile and highly recommended.

On tap at the open house on 2/16.

Appearance: Pours a midnight black with a finger of a white head that dissipates quickly.

Smell: Smells of dark fruits, slight chocolate, and some graham cracker.

Taste - Taste mirrors the nose.

Mouthfeel: Thick mouthfeel. Alcohol is masked well.

Overall: More dark fruits than I was expecting and probably my least favorite of the day but I still liked it.

This is truly a unique beer! It smells like cinnamon, immediately making you think you're about to drink a cookie. And when you taste it, the cinnamon blends perfectly with the graham cracker. It literally tastes like you're drinking a cookie.

Solid. Just undone by some cheap vanilla and a slack feel.
