Bottled 12/11/13 (Cellared 3 months). First time consuming. Poured into Night Shift teku directly from cellar temp.

Appearance- Dark brown with some ruby and tan tints where light passes through. Prickly light tan head lasts a surprisingly long time for a sour beer, settles into a thick glass ring.

Smell- Acetic wine barrel notes. Cherries. Yup. Smell accurately reflects the bottle's stated intent. Enough said.

Taste- Whoa, this is one of the more jarring examples of a beer's taste not matching the aroma. Heavy tobacco and tannic leather up front, with an underlying puckering rye note. That rye/ sour combination is not very pleasant on first sip. As my palate adjusts and mouth is coated, I get some softer fig and chocolate flavors, along with the black cherries popping in. The sweetness is a welcome addition.

Mouthfeel- Well done here. This is very drinkable from a carbonation and feel standpoint. Medium carbonation levels and a viscous coating mouthfeel that doesn't quite get chewy. Alcohol is well hidden at 9.7%.

I guess this is what we get from a Community designing the recipe. I think the rye + red wine was a mistake. Flavors just not appealing in the finished product.

Bottled 12/11/13.
One of my favorite Barrel Society beers (maybe the favorite).

The appearance is a little off-putting. A murky red/brown color with a small tan head. The aroma and taste made up for the rather ugly appearance.

Aroma of tobacco, leather, spice, and sweet cherry.

Taste of tobacco, tannins, cherry, and pepper.

A beautiful combination of sweet and sour.

Ready for more of these!
