Add another bottle to the bad bottle list. This had a very overwhelming nose of buttery popcorn. So amazingly buttery it was as if it was purposefully made to smell like movie theater popcorn. Mouth feel was fine and taste wasn't as bad as the nose but the taste had strong butter presence as well. Disappointing, most did not finish glass when bottle was split 5 ways.

Wow, very surprised by this.

The nose doesn't offer much of interest, a generic sour smell with a bit of fruit. Hard to determine what you;re getting.

The taste is a different animal, with expressive peach, mango, and tropical fruits flavors. Their is also plenty of puckering sour notes to compliment the fruit flavors.

Mouthfeel is right on, with good carbonation and a nicely balanced acidity.

Overall, this is one of the better berliners I've had in awhile.

Somewhat surprised by the mixed reviews on this one. Even a few friends locally were hit or miss on this one. I personally thought it was one of the better 2014 sours NSB released. That being said, I just popped a bottle a couple weeks ago and it has aged very well. If you like tarty sours you will love it.

Thanks to mrbubbler for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

2014 vintage. Bottled on: 11/17/14.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy white head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is sour with grain, peach, mango, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sour mango, kiwi-strawberry, and acidic flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a kiwi-strawberry flavor that is a bit odd since neither of those fruits were used in this one.

Serving type: bottle.

I've been saying they should make a Mango Berliner... 750ml bottle into a Night Shift Barrel Society snifter.

Pours a foamy 1 finger spritzy white head with poor retention. Beer is a cloudy peach/mango. Spotty, sparse lace with little stick and thin legs. Average.

Nose is unmistakable mango puree with a hint of yeasty tartness. Simple but very aromatic and delightful.

Opens mango puree and meat with some funk and foam in the middle. Juicy sweetness mixed with a tartness that builds from the middle to end. Gets a touch more robust right at the finish with a sour mango end and aftertaste. Again, pretty simple... a bit dull on the palate at times.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and aggressive in the mouth and goes down puckering and filmy. Accented finish with a lingering, sticky aftertaste. Excellent.

Overall a really interesting and tasty beer. Pretty simplistic but that's what I want out of my fruited berliners anyway. I'd revisit this one again.

Must be tons of bottle variation with this one. Because the beer I had was really nice. Great fruited berliner. I didn't pick up the diacetyl issues other have. Yes, there may be a little butter on nose, but that didn't translate to the taste in the bottle I drank. Seemed more like an aspect of the peaches used than a flaw in the beer; didn't seem like diacetyl was present. At any rate, the bottle I had was drastically better than the reviews suggest. Too bad others haven't had the same experience, because the beer I had was really nice.

Notes from 12/16/14

I thought I'd add this review after the wonderfully insightful infection thread from today. Unfortunately, my tasting notes are lacking...

A - 1 inch of dense but fizzy head which quickly dissipates. So-so lacing. Soft, unfiltered grapefruit/peach colored body.

S - Heavy and intense sourness. Some sweet peach, but overwhelmingly sour.

T - Sour peach candy. Starts with acid and slight, but bright, sourness (like lemon juice). Middle is delicious: fresh peaches and maybe some mango poking through. Finishes with more sour notes, more like warheads or sour patch kids with the fruit juice carrying through and balancing it out. Maybe a little vinegar as well.

M - Low carb. Sour finish, leaving a slight tingle. Refreshing.

O - Almost as good as Ever Weisse. I didn't get any of the buttery flavors cited below. Maybe my unsophisticated palate paid off this time around because as far as peach wilds go this was right up there with Farm to Face.

You can smell the peach trying to creep out and even get some peach flavor on the front end. The nose is then dominated by overwhelming sourness. The taste is stomach acid sour. This beer is lacto gone wild. Completely unbalanced. I don't get the mango but there is some credit for the peach flavor being present.

This beer is just not good...
Pours fine i suppose but smells like buttery peaches. If you told me i was smelling movie popcorn i'd believe you. Tastes just as it smells. Sour butter. The first moment might be good. Tart, peach, and then within the inital second BUTTER. Its just not drinkable. Very disappointed in night shift this year

Poured from the bottle, from the start seemed like something was off. Possible infection going on here, that might be the mystery. Everyone who drank thought the same thing, sadly a drain pour, hopefully this was an isolated bottle. You could tell from the smell and the initial taste that this had potential, but something wrong happened here.

Poured from a bottle into a Night Shift glass. Flat, no effervescence at all. More vinegar than fruit. Pale orange color with no head. My wife couldn't stand the vinegar smell, so she gave me her glass. I had a hard time finishing the bottle.

from notes,

on draft at the brewery

A nice nose, peaches mainly, little to no mango. Color was off putting, must have been white peaches(not the bright orange I was expecting from my mango sour experiments). Peach flavor was huge and fantastic , mango was missing, nice and tart like all the other weise beers at nightshift, but and I mean a big BUT, serious cardboard flavor on the finish. it was actually gross. Something happened during the fermentation process and O2 got in there. I am very surprised they bottled and served this. I really hope they redo this and fix the flaws because this beer has serious potential and could be very good.

Update: had this over the weekend and it aged beautifully. It was light, tart, and bit sour but the fruit flavors shined through. When I drank this fresh it was a disaster. It's pretty damn good now.
