The 87The 87
Notes: Our house double IPA, The 87, has a piece of NSB history in its moniker. Named for our home at 87 Santilli Highway in Everett, this luscious hop-bomb is wonderfully drinkable even with a little extra ABV. The 87's hop profile marries traditional American varietals with some exciting, newer hops. After a few iterations, we're pretty dang happy with the recipe.

The look of 11 crushed cans with my lips all over the sniffer, man it smells so good. I just pounded 11 of these, wow is all I can say. I can barely stand. I just barfed a little in my mouth and even that tasted good the 2nd time down. A real keeper, feels good in my blood.

16oz tallboy can, sample purchased as brewery.

Lots of suds, sticky lacing all over the glass. Very hazed light amber hue. Fresh citrus nose, more rind and pith than zest ... some tea and floral alcohol in the nose as well. Nearly silky smooth within a firm medium body. Ample hop bitterness, wavering pungent flavors. Exotic fruit and rind. Grassy graininess, faint grapenut tone. Warming and approachable. A bit in your face IPA, hop character does not want to let go at all. Makes me want to take another sip.

Ah, '87.'s always reminded me of prom. But now the Night Shift beer makers have me thinking about something else. Citrus, orchard and tropical flavors come with a mental soothing strength for a more modern taste, texture and perfume than anything made in 1987, especially the aquanet and spandex.

But the imperial stout that is The 87 comes with waves of ripe, radiant and succulent hop aromatics. Its delectable perfume precedes even the golden amber hue that seems brightly of orange hues. Sweet on the early palate with toastiness, nuttiness and an overall graham cracker taste, hints of honey and caramel begin to soothe the sweet tooth.

Sweetness fades gradually on the middle palate until it recedes to a mere supporting role for hops. But its the hops that grow into fruity, floral and bitter lather. Orange, mango and cantaloup mingle with a rich juiciness that's bright and also rich. Red grapefruit, lemon leaf and juniper come in later with a sharp and crisp late palate. Moderately bitter, the taste of fresh grassiness and torn pine needles resonate with a peachy peppery bite.

Medium bodied but seemingly fuller early on, the beer's body eventually reduces to a malty dry finish with a long afterglow of citrus, pepper and pine that outlasts any grain sugars or more supple fruit impressions.

This is a big bottle for 1 person, but I have a long night of work, so hopefully it'll get me through. Bottled 5/07/15

Pours a nice foamy creamy almost 2 finger head that fades semi slowly, nice sticky lacing, semi hazy honey orange color.

Nose def brings hops, plenty of hop aromas, fresh hop oils, mild resin and dankness, a little pith and orange zest notes with mild citrus, a mild grapefruit pith like mostly for the citrus, some grassy floral notes with a hint earthy, a little candied orange peel and some nice sweet malty malts but not syrupy. As it warms the hops and dank resin turns to some tropical notes, a touch of passion fruit and guava, maybe, I might be pushing it with that.

Taste brings sweet caramel malts, toasted grainy malts, with a big caramel flavor, tons of like caramel syrup, and raw maple, but not super sweet, just seems like it should be with the flavors. Then hops, nice orange flavor, it has an old fashioned like flavor to it. Bitter zest, some candied orange, a hint of grapefruit pith, and eventually a little ruby red grapefruit, hint of a resin and sticky hops, with some earthy spicy notes in the background. Generic fruity flavors in there, almost like a tropical citrus fruit punch, some generic tropical notes as well. Finish is somewhat dry surprisingly, with a hint of booze as it dries, fair bitter spicy hops really come through, a touch more tropical and citrus with resin, and more of an old fashioned cocktail flavor again.

Mouth is fuller bod, a little syrupy like, hint of booze on the dry finish although mostly on the sweeter side, nice carb.

Overall, it's OK, the nose was nice, but the flavor was way too sweet and malty, and somewhat syrupy, it really drowned out the hops which seemed like they had some potential. The overall product didn't meld too well, it's decent but not great. Seems like most Night Shift beers, they get almost to a great product then stop there and just let it go.

A hazy vibrant orange-gold pour with a foamy egg shell colored head.

Smells very nice. Zesty fruits, like pineapple, grapefruit, mango, and melon and a sweet malt base with a smidge of alcohol.

The malts all but disappear in the flavor. This one is in your face. A blast of mouth puckering, fairly spicy hops. A bunch of fermented pineapple, sour, bitter grapefruit and lemon, and resinous green floral hops, and a touch of candied orange. Whew! Getting a workout here.

Body is fluffy and fairly full, but doesn't drink filling at all.

I think this one is excellent, but suspect that it may drink a little better in a few more weeks too. The ripe green flavors are just a little overwhelming. I can almost prove this theory because I am enjoying it moreand more as I make my way toward the end and my tongue feels like I have been licking envelopes for an hour

Poured out of a 16 oz. can. About two and a half weeks old.

Pours a hazy, rich golden orange color with over two fingers of a billowing dense head.

Aroma brings a complex hop bill. Get juicy orange flesh, ruby red grapefruit, lemon, mango, slight peach, grass, and pine. A sugary sweetness and very slight breadiness are there from the malt to balance everything out, but the hops are the show.

Taste follows the aroma well. Big amounts of juicy orange, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, and mango give way to a dry and bitter finish, bringing an onslaught of pine resin and grass. Nicely balanced with sugary sweetness and a touch of breadiness. Starts east coast, but finishes more west coast.

High medium body. Smooth, creamy, chewy. Great mouthfeel.

Another solid hoppy beer from these guys. Wonderfully juicy complex, and bitter.

Really solid DIPA. Mosaic in the nose? Ella in the finish? Solid, non-resiny DIPA. Very drinkable and enjoyable, although not quite as aromatic as the huge VT DIPAs. Nice beer.
