Growler picked up from brewery yesterday. Poured into my CCB snifter. Not sure which batch, I'm assuming probably 5, which had a little bit higher abv.

A- Pours an opaque pitch black with about a quarter finger of off-white mocha slightly yeasty colored head that quickly dissipates. Lots of tiny carbonation bubbles rising fast along the sides of the glass, definitely above average for a stout. Some layered lacing, but not much.

S- The chicory root and ginger definitely stands out as the most dominant aroma. Fairly roasty, with a little bit of chocolate in the background but not nearly as much as I was expecting.

T- Interesting taste- like the smell the ginger and chicory root stand out as the primary tastes mixed with hints of chocolate and roasted malts, followed by a semi-sweet bitter aftertaste where the chocolate stands out a little bit more, but still not too dominant. Chocolate stands out a little bit more as it warms.

M- Medium bodied, definitely a little bit on the lighter side for a stout, a little bit above average carbonation, well-balanced, abv very well hidden, not syrupy at all.

O- This was an interesting stout from a local brewery that I was fortunate to try in it's early stages. It was definitely a little bit different then you're average stout- with more of a strong presence of ginger and chicory. The smell and taste were definitely distinct and fairly strong which I loved about this beer. I would like to see the beer get a little bit more of a sweet chocolate flavor while still maintaining the ginger and chicory. I would recommend trying this beer out and also checking the brewery out.

Note- When we went to the brewery they only had Trifecta, Viva Habenera, and Taza that were growlerable. While all of the beers looked good the Trifecta was getting toward the end of the batch and looked a little bit yeastier then usual and while the viva habenera was very well done and an interesting beer to try, we thought it was a little bit too spicy to get an entire growler of.

A: Pours a deep dark brown color with a bubbly one finger tan head. Leaves some swathes of lace on the surface, but settles fairly quickly.

S: Lots of roasted malt and chicory with a hint of ginger lurking in the background. Faint Mexican chocolate, chipotle and freshly ground coffee. The smells meld together a little strangely, but I have hope for this.

T: A lot of chicory, almost overwhelmingly so. Some day old coffee and a kind of strange roasty sourness going into the finish. Not picking up much from the cocoa nibs at all here. Mouthfeel is a touch overcarbonated and brings out the chicory just a little too much. I really want to try more from these guys, but this one didn't knock it out of the park.

In a tulip, this beer was very dark brown, almost black, with some garnet. There was a small tan head.

I found the aroma to be a little on the meek side. Roasted malt/coffee. Sweet.

The taste improved on the aroma. Dark coffee, sweet chocolate; nicely juxtaposed. There was a bit of spiciness that I hadn't detected in the aroma.

I thought this beer was a bit on the thin side. Definitely not as robust as I was expecting.

Appearance: high carbonation, 3/4 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: milk and dark chocolate

Taste: milk and dark chocolate, charred malt, vanilla, and light nutmeg at the end

Mouthfeel: Sweet with slight bitterness and a dry semi-bitter finish, heavy body, moderate carbonation

Overall: A tasty chocolate stout with an amazing aftertaste. This is my first bottle from Night Shift and based off of this, I will definately be picking up more of their beer.

A- dark mahogany to black, thin 1 finger mocha head, bubbly lacing
S- ginger, Belgian yeast, roasted coffee, bakers chocolate, burnt toast
T- chocolate, spices, ginger, coffee, cocoa powder
M- medium body and carbonation. Nice bitter chocolate up front then the ginger strokes the tongue gently.
O- nice beer with some twists. NS likes to push the envelope a bit with their beer and express their creativity. It works for me.

Thanks to jaasen64 for this one! Batch #5, 5/13/12

A: Pours a nice black color with a small khaki colored head on top, not much retention, leaving a thin ring on top. Very thin lacing forms on some of the glass.

S: Upfront there is some ginger and chocolate with some light roasty malt. A little bit of chicory comes in too. Reminds me chocolate covered gingers from Trader Joe's.

T: A little bit of chocolate and faint chicory with just a touch of cream. Not much ginger at all. A little bit of brown sugar and molasses.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Just a touch thin.

O: Really liked the aroma, just wish the ginger and chocolate had been that strong in the flavor profile and been just a touch fuller bodied.
