A-Cloudy bright yellow one finger head that doesn't last very long.

S-Mild tart notes, wheat and then tones of lemon. Lots and lots of lemon. very slight ginger.

T-Starts and ends with lemon. The lemon flavor was good but there was too much of it and it didn't balance well with anything else. More tart than sour. Some wheat and ginger but once again dominated by the lemon.

M-Lighter, tad watery slight carbonation.

O-A good beer that could become much better if the balance improved.

Sampled from a 750ml bottle in a large Duvel glass. Dated 7/15/13, Batch #13. Thanks surge1311!!!

A - yellow and hazy with a nice white head.

S - Lemon with a variety of fruit and spice notes. The wheat contributes nicely.

T - A wonderful lemony bite. Firmly sour but not piercing. There are plenty of fruity aspects to add depth. Very tasty.

M - A moderate consistency and a low carbonation with a nice pucker factor.

O - Wow, I like this beer. Maybe my favorite out of MA. I might no have left had the state been brewing beers like this eight years ago.

750ml bottle into a matching Night Shift stemmed glass. The brew appears a hazy golden yellow color with a firm white cap. Some spotty lace hangs on the glass and the head fades to a penline around the perimeter.

The aroma is strong with ginger that is lemon and earthy with a straw-like grain note and a hint of wheat/grassiness. Overall clean and very ginger forward.

The taste includes a bit of lemony grass and sulfur. It has a dry bready grain flavor and wheat/straw. It boasts almost a perfume-like coriander quality which is a little excessive even by wit or spiced beer standards. It is slightly tart and overall tasty.

This is a light bodied brew with a light amount of carbonation. It is ginger heavy and lightly tart with plenty of grainy character. This is pleasant and unique stuff. However, really an odd ball in the night shift berliner lineup. Whereas the others are sour to the point of being harsh, this one is hardly even tart.

Sideline note: I heard there is plenty of batch variation here and this one being batch 17 seems to be the most timid one to date.

Thanks to Wowcoolman for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

Batch # 11. Bottled 8/6/13.

Pours a murky light yellow with a foamy bone head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, grain, lemon, and ginger aromas. Taste is much the same with sour lemon and ginger flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and quite refreshing.

750ml bottle, thanks Dustin. Shared this one at a pre-4elf bottleshare at the hotel (Mainer Weiss and Fallen Apple were also opened by others there). Poured into a Hill Farmstead stemmed glass today, 12/14/2013.

Pours a very pretty bright straw-yellow body with a very effervescent white head, probably 2-3 fingers' worth, with very good retention. Looks very pretty, and a very typical wild ale.

Smells great- got a lot of tartness and vinegary acidity straight up, complemented by a crapload of lemon that still isn't enough to dominate the tartness and acidity. I can already tell this is going to melt my teeth.

And it does melt my teeth indeed. So, so sour it makes my parotid glands cry for momma. It's very tart in a non-descript way that is nicely overwhelmed by a straight up acidity, like biting into a lemon. There's some herbal notes in there as well that complement the lemon-like acidity. A bit of the wheat base comes out as well when it warms up some more.

Thinner bodied, not watery but a bit thin as expected for the Berliner style. So damn sour, it's more of a sipper than it should be. Despite this, its very well carbonated and creamy.

Nicely done, but a bit too damn sour for a berliner. As a sour head, I really enjoyed this and can't believe this is so lowly rated. Sure, Ever Weiss and Mainer Weiss are better, but this beer is better than people give it credit for.

Served from a 750ml C&C bottle into a Crooked Stave tulip.

Appearance- Hazy yellow with quick two finger bubbly white head that little lacing.

Smell- Definantly get that lemon grass, a little ginger, kaffir lime leaves, a little pepper, wheat funk, something chemical (not in a bad way). Smells more herbal than it does fruity.

Taste- Lemon with a little ginger heat. Reminds me of lemon ginger tea. A little lime and wheat malts. Thats about it though. Not too much else going on, but it's real nicely balanced. Quite tart too.

Mouthfeel- Medium full carbonation with a big pucker factor. Pretty dry, but easy to drink. Lighter body than Everweiss.

Overall- Another nice sour from Nightshift. I feel that this would actually be a better colder weather beer as opposed to a "summer" beer. Tart but warming, and still refreshing.

Pours pale cloudy yellow with no head. No lace.

Nose is lemon and ginger and yeast. Smells like a cough drop your grandmother would make you have.

Big tart bite up front. Lemongrass is nice, but runs into a medicinal ginger that is almost overbearing. Nice tart finish with a mild ginger flavor.

Light and fizzy. Good structure.

Ginger flaws this but it is still pretty drinkable.

Appearance: Hazed bright gold. Tiny bright-white collar dissipates instantly. Moderate carbonation on the pour. No cap.

Smell: Ginger and lots of it. Solid punch of lemongrass. Some Lemonhead like sweetness. Floral in moderation with a light pale malt base. A bit of lactic tartness. Citric. Lemon zest and a very slight sweetness. Very light with some faint almost biscuity hints.

Taste: Slightly damp with some mild grass and floral elements. Lemongrass flashes up front and disappears when the ginger rolls through. Loaded with fresh ginger. slight pale malt sweetness. Nice blend of lactic tartness with some more aggressive citric sourness. Clean yeast and refreshing. So much ginger. Vague lemon candy sweetness (which is obviously all lemongrass can taste like).

Mouthfeel: Light, slightly crisp, and clean. Moderate leaning toward high carbonation. So light and refreshing.

Overall: Ginger Weisse.

Has that nice tart balance I expect from the Night Shift Weisses, but it's so ginger heavy it's distracting. A perfect summer refresher though.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Consumed 10/12/13

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, hazy medium gold - some serious yellow tones as well - pours with a very small, off-white head - fades to virtually nothing, not much lacing

Smell: Pretty ridiculous, like funky ginger lemonade - so, so much ginger - ripe and over the top - tons of lemon as well - some sour, but mostly funky weirdness, with some tart lemon

Taste: Weird, weird, and good - loads of lemon, like a very lightly sweet lemonade - light malty sweetness - big, potent ginger notes- again, like some kind of ginger lemonade - very sour and funky, with some damp, wet funk - loads of lemon tartness

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body, low carbonation, smooth, some nice sour. near-puckering

Overall: Just like (drunk) grandma used to make!

This is really weird, and really interesting. There are some huge lemon and ginger notes here, with some big funk. Definitely worth a try.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Batch 13, bottled 7/5/13.

Appearance - Hazy golden yellow. Small white head.

Smell - God damn it's gingery. Some lemongrass. But the ginger compounds the acidic aroma. Lemony too.

Taste - Ginger everywhere. Lemony tartness. Quite sour. Ginger dominates the flavor. Grainy finish.

Mouthfeel - Light but very sour. Medium carbonation.

Overall - I can't take all this ginger. Everything else is pretty nice.

750mL bottle into a Teku
Bottled on: 7/15/13, batch 13

Thanks to kdmcguire10 for sending this one over as an extra.

A: Pours a very hazy, pale light straw yellow with 2 fingers width of white head that dissipates down very quickly to nothing and leave zero lacing.

S: Smells like lemonade. Lots of citrus, tart, and some sweetness. I also get ginger and a bit of oak. Tartness builds as it warms.

T: Follows the nose, except more sour. Still very reminiscent of lemonade. Lots of tart lemon, some ginger, an accompanying sweetness. The degree of sourness is impressive. Loving this.

M/D: Lighter body, puckering tartness, heavy carbonation. Exceedingly drinkable.

O: Fantastic. Easily the best Berliner Weisse Ive ever had. If this is available to you, go buy it, now. Thanks again Kris for this awesome extra.

A-Pours hazy and paler yellow. Thin head in my tiny sample cup.

S-Aroma is out there. Spicy, lemony and loaded with ginger.

T-What an odd tasting beer. Its pretty sour. Then the spicy ginger really kicks in and lingers. Wheaty. Sour lemon flesh. Lingering ginger spice.

M-Has more body than most Berliners. Moderate carbonation.

O/D-By far one of the oddest beers I had at Night of the Funk. First sip I didn't like then the second one grew on me. Well worth a try.

Had on tap at Lord Hobo in Cambridge

Appearance - poured a hazy orange/yellow with minimal head
Smell - Minimal scent, but faint funkiness with a bit of citrus
Taste - Very refreshing and you could definitely taste the ginger. Not very boozy at all, and had a nice sour finish. Very crisp
Overall - Another great sour by NightShift. This is a perfect summer beer that is refreshing and light with still a but of funkiness as well

750ml, Batch 13 7/15/13
Night Shift baby TEKU

A: Pours a hazy bright yellow color. Tight thin layer of bright white head. Good amount of carbonation.

S: Smells like a straight forward Berliner, but with the addition of that Ginger nose. As I let a rest I smell the Lemongrass. Bright citrus zest.

T: Nice tartness up front. Bright citrus: lemon, zest, lime. You get slight yogurt like lactic character. Funky. That Ginger comes in towards the back end. Lingers. It's fresh. Dry finish.

M: Light bodied. High carbonation.

A - Hazy golden yellow with a small white head 4

S - Spicy ginger, lemon, lactic acid, and white vinegar to give it a strong tartness

T - Tart lemon, spicy ginger, and white vinegar. The tartness is actually nice and muted. The finish has some ginger and white vinegar tartness

M - Light carbonation with a tart and dry finish that lingers on

O - Interesting sour with the ginger that adds a nice heat and spice to a Berliner

Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice mostly crystal clear straw hue with a fizzy two finger head that fades at the usual rate. Solid for the style.

S - Very nice lemon grass notes here, light vinegar notes and almost a white wine aspect. There is some ginger, which for me is unfortunately faint. The lemongrass makes up for it though. Ginger comes out much more as it warms.

S - Holy shit is this sour! Lots of lactic on it too. Man oh man. Creamy tart sourness, tart lemons, super faint ginger (again, for me unfortunate), light vinegar notes. Very sour, tart creamy lactose. Woah. Was not expecting it to be this sour. Ginger comes out much more as it warms.

M - Mouthfeel is spot on here. The carbonation is excellent. With the lactose your mind expects it to be creamy, but no...cheek puckeringly tart.

O - Overall, while not a traditional berliner it is still very nicely executed with the ingredients. Great for a warm summer day.

A: Bright but hazy straw-yellow with a super bubbly, white head that builds and fades very quickly. All liquid and no lace. Poured most of the yeast in because the bottle tipped, spilled, and therefore the sediment was released.

S: Huge aromas of yeast, barn, and citrus. Acidic and funky. Very enticing.

T: Everything that's in the nose plus the added deliciousness of the lemongrass and ginger. The ginger really stands out in a balanced, complementary way. Gives the beer a nice zing.

M: Tons of flavor and a light, drinkable body. Obviously very thirst quenching with proper carbonation. Sour, tart, funky.

O: Another fantastic sour from Night Shift. Good for summertime drinking. Good for anytime drinking.

The beer pours a chalky, pale yellow with hints of light orange and green. The beer pours with a nice head of soda-like white bubbles. In body the beer is very cloudy and impenetrable to the eye, though light and bubbly. On the nose, the beer smells beautifully funky, almost like a lambic with leather and cherry hints beside bright citric lemon and a touch of spicy ginger. The more you stick your nose in the beer, the richer the funk smell becomes and the more nuances you detect. It smells delectable and complex. On the tongue, the beer tastes tart and puckering with big acidity at the forefront of the taste. As the beer moves over the tongue, however, a nice balancing sweetness blankets the tongue and cushions it from the harsher bite of the acid. Faint, herbal saltiness can also be detected on the edges of the palate. In flavor, the beer begins as huge citric lemon with deep fruity notes that lightly hint at cherry, but mostly suggest the complexity of a well-crafted lemonade. Subtle ginger spice tingles across the middle of the swallow, and brings some really nice, ginger ale-like flavors to the finish alongside tart lemon and light wheat flake flavors that quench down the tartness. The aftertaste is lightly citric with lemon fruit and soft wheat flake flavors. In the mouth, the beer feels light in body, but sharp in carbonation with a good strong scrub and a solid pucker from the acid. The mouth is left with a light ringing pucker and some nice balancing saliva that doesn’t completely flood the mouth with fluid. Overall, this is a supremely crafted American Weisse with a great amount of Berliner Weisse in it. The citrus and wheat flavor of the classic Berliner are still in this beer, but it is far fruitier and more complex than a traditional Berliner Weisse, making the beer fascinating to drink. This beer is light and refreshing, and makes one hell of a summer beer. Try it!

First had: on tap at Night Shift

Poured a cloudy, white peach color with a nice white head that receded to a thin layer and left a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma was citrus, musty, mildly acetic. Well-rounded taste, clean and fresh (would be good in the summer, though I did have this in the winter), lemongrass, citrus zest, a twinge of tartness, pale malts, and a dash of gingery spice. Smooth mouthfeel, medium body, very enjoyable overall. My favorite of the NS brews I sampled.

Bottle courtesy of cbeer88, thanks again!

Pours a bright and clear gold color with a tiny white head that disappeared to nothing.

Aromas are very nice. Notes of white wine, ginger, lemon, and faint vinegar.

Taste is lactic and sour up front. Thick, with creamy sweetness, tart lemon, light ginger, and a nice subtle vinegar and funky sourness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is great. Thick, full, and very smooth without being heavy.

Overall, this is quite nice. I'm not sure this is a true Berliner Weiss, but that being said, this is still a tasty sour.

Bottle shared thanks to bstyle. Poured into a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Comes out a bright, hazy yellow orange, with a finger of fizzy white head that dissipates rapidly. No lacing, and body is quite still.

Smell: Ginger right up front, followed by a really nice lemon rind. Some bready yeast, and a slight lactic smell.

Taste: Again, the ginger and lemon rind really meld. A nice clean lactic tartness, minimal funk, and some bready yeast. Just an overall clean beer.

Mouthfeel: This beer is exceptionally drinkable. Would be perfect on a summer day (or any other time). Despite the lack of carb on the body, still a nice carb on the tongue, especially when mixed with the tartness.

Overall: This beer was a pleasure to drink. Clean, simple combination of some new ingredients. I really look forward to what Night Shift offers in the future.

Poured from the tap at the brewery on September 8th, 2012.

This beer poured a rich, gold, hazy colour with a large, fomay head. It smelled sweet with hints of lemongrass and ginger... almost like a soda. It tasted just like it smelled, sweet with lemon and ginger with a slight earthiness to it. It was low-carbonated with a tart/sour finish. Definitely a very refreshing summer beer... perfect for a hot day.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

Thanks to Eric for this one. 5.2%... strong for a Berliner. Corked and caged bottle into a decanter, into a Lost Abbey Teku glass. Shared with schen9303.

1 Finger white head with moderate retention. Beer is semi-cloudy yellow. No lace. Decent for the style.

Nose is exactly as advertised. Lemongrass, big ginger, some light lactic tartness in the background. Aromatic too. Again, solid.

At first sip, I hate it, but on the second, third, and fourth, I find myself liking this one more and more. Opens with a huge ginger presence that lingers throughout. Lemongrass towards the middle with a slight lactic tartness building from the beginning and peaking at the end. Finishes lactic and ginger peel. I like it.

Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Light and crisp in the mouth and effervescent and slightly puckering going down. Messy finish with a lingering aftertaste. Good for the style.

I'm not a huge fan of ginger but I love me a solid berlinerweisse and this one delivers. A little weird and takes a bit getting used to but it works for some reason. Worth a try.
