Pours a healthy two to three finger head, deep tan color, dense microfoam with an even surface, adequate stick to what lacing is there, nice retention. The liquid is mostly opaque, a murky brownish core which fades to a mix of muddy yellows and oranges around the rims, not much visible by way of carbonation. The nose is quite sweet, developing strong currents of milk chocolate, molasses, licorice, custard and ginger spice, verges on prune, plenty of dark fruit scents, layers itself well without ever fatiguing your nostrils. In the mouth, however, it is a little heavy and the carbonation is somewhat weak and unable to create meaningful lift off the palate. That said, the flavors are vivid and sure to please any sweet tooth, anise, cinnamon, chocolate, coconut, brown sugar, honey, some graininess along the lines of honeyed bread. Plum to prune, cherry, apricot fruit dominates. Mild char to it relieves some sugariness. Strikes me as an “nightcap” sort of beer, relaxing after dinner. Not sure I’d want to put down more than a couple of glasses. But what you do drink would please for sure.

Smells similar to a Chimay but the Taste falls short. Way short. A drinkable dark beer that has a decent lacing and good coloring. but, again I must say, the aroma is the most inviting aspect of the beer as I see/taste it.

Pours a dark reddish brown, with low head.

Smell is fruity and slightly sweet. Raisins, dates and yeast are augmented by some raspberries and saffron.

Taste starts like the nose, with a bit more yeast, before adding some raspberry jam and a nice bitterness. Some licorice comes in at the end.

Mouthfeel is where this really shines. Velvety and smooth, and well carbonated.

Overall, a really nice and different Belgian, really nice flavors and great mouthfeel.

Malty, boozy, and a brown sugar note. Warming feeling and a lingering finish.

Poured into a stone flute. Pours a dark mahogany brown with red highlights and a half finger khaki head that dissipated into a thin film and light lacing. Aroma of fresh and dried dark stone fruit, syrup, alcohol (oddly smells somewhat like isopropyl rather than ethanol..probably due to fruit esters), a hint of molasses and Belgian yeast. Flavor is rich fresh and dried dark fruit, particularly plums and dates, Belgian yeast, clove, finishes with semi-sweet dark fruit and clove bitterness. Medium bodied with peppery, active carbonation. An excellent domestic take on a BSDA with good depth and nice fruit flavor. Well balanced with some spice dryness with a light semi-sweetness from the fruit flavors. Warming, but alcohol is well covered with none of the booziness of the aroma. A really well done Belgian dark that I wish was available in my area.

Corked and caged 750mL bottle from j47paco (thanks!). No apparent bottling date. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep, opaque mahogany with some crimson highlights and about two fingers of dense pale khaki head. The froth gradually recedes to a modest ring, leaving a few decent sized patches of lace.

Smells of candied dark fruits backed by plum, caramel, raisin bread, leather and just a hint of oxidation.

Tastes much more bready than the nose implied. Rye bread, raisin oat muffin, plum skins, dates, caramel, cocoa, slight molasses, faint leather, subtle clove towards the back end and a little mild booze character.

Medium, fairly creamy body with moderately soft carbonation. Raisin bread, fruit skins, burnt caramel and trace clove in the finish.

Bready and dark fruity overall, this hits all attributes well. Anomaly is a solid BDSA from Monkish and worth checking out for fans of the style.
