I visited Monkish on Sunday 1/20/13. Going back to my birth town of Torrance. Monkish is located in a little strip mall off Western Avenue a couple miles south of the 405. Walking in I was suprised how small it was, about 7-8 four person tables with the brewing tanks clearly visible. They had 8 of their beers on-tap, I opted for a flight of 4 (Crux, Red Table, Lumen, Magnificat) for $7. I've always enjoyed Monkish's beers when I've seen them on-tap so I wanted to visit the source. Crux and Red Table were good Belgian-style beers, but Lumen and Magnificat were fantastic and great examples of why these guys are one of my new favourite breweries. Talked to the brewer Henry as well; he was friendly, gracious and willing to talk about the beer in hand. Monkish is a little out of the way, but fans of experimental Belgian-style beers should check them out, especially as a little side trip on the way to the Redondo Beach pier.

Selection wasn't that good, especially for people who travel far for beer. They wouldn't put an IPA in a 64oz growler but they are able to put a 9.8% tripel in a growler. I wanted some IPA to take home but I was sad when they said no. This doesn't make sense with ABC rules. And the beers you are able to take as a growler are gross.

Nice little spot in the cut. Solid vibe, mixed crowd. Had an alright selection on tap. Not much to choose from. Chorizo man outback was fire! Free pretzels and water. I would come back if I was in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way to get here.

Really enjoyed my first experience there. Very mellow, low key vibe and the locals were more then wiling to talk shop and give me some good suggestions. I wish they had a few more IPA's on tap, but still, all the beers were delicious. Only complaint is that I ordered a flight and instead of giving you all the beers at once they give you 4 tokens so every time you finish a beer you have to get back on line for your next which gets a little tedious. Otherwise though I had a really good time and will be stop by next time I am in Los Angeles

Any time I'm in town Monkish is a mandatory stop. The staff that is working is always helpful and friendly, and if your there on a non-release day they are always down to talk and give great recommendations. Only complaint is due to the IPA's being made in small batches, they tend to go pretty quick, so if you find something you like it may not be there the following day.
