If you don't like rum or for that matter Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, then stay away from this one. The nose is like a bottle of rum full of the alcohol and distilled cane sugar. There is some oak and coconut that reminds you of a double Pina Colada.

This is rather boozy and the alcohol makes several appearances during the drink. It starts rummy and coconut laden like a Pina Colada. It gets kind of fruity on the back end with a pineapple garnish taste. It also captures a purple grape flavor to make it vastly different and wonderfully interesting. I'm not a rum drinker but I enjoyed this.

Out from obscurity, the stepchild of the porter family finds favor with the oaky sweetness and tantalizing spice of rum barrels. The taste of Baltic travels never had it so good.

Its dark and murky brown pour is bound with ruddish tawny highlights. With its creamy tan head swirling about, its toasty, nutty, vinous and oaken aromas greet the nose with boldness and a surprising twang. Dry sweetness of molasses, cocoa and sugar cane support the unique taste that is unique of the porter.

And its that identifiable flavor of Baltic porter that comes alive upon the middle palate. Toasted sweetness is of burnt toffee and mild molasses. But once the sweetness is carried off by hurrying carbonation, the toasted oak, burnt bread and bitter chocolate flavors fend for themselves. Through the center, a vinous grape, aniseed and plum character emerges and gives the taste a clever estery and oxidized taste.

Finishing with light madera, dark drunken fruit and a pep of spice, the rum and wood rounds the final flavors with tannic spice, a powdery dryness, and medium alcohol warmth. Its dry effervescence provides a carbonic bite that highlights the dark ale's short malty balance.

Vanilla, molasses, dark rum. No sweetness. Oak dryness. On the thin side. The more I drink it, the more it's growing on me. Not really worth tracking down, but I'm glad to try it. Don't know why it gets such a bad wrap.
