bottle into tulip

appearance: black beer with slight off white head

smell: very coffee forward, bready chocolate, roasted malt, earthy hops, espresso, hot cocoa

taste: bready, upfront espresso and roasted coffee flavors, very airy and sort of light (think aerated chocolate vs. normal chocolate). Dark chocolate and some subtle hop bitterness makes a presence towards the end, but the flavor is pretty tame. Great drinkability for a lower abv stout.

mouthfeel: average carbonation, really thin

overall: This should be called the Session Stout. After drinking this immediately following an Expedition Stout, this is easily a sessionable beer and while on the light side for stouts, there is enough flavor complexity here to satisfy. A great well balanced brew from Bells.

Went to school in Kalamazoo, great beer town...

Has a dark brownish-black color. Dark like used motor oil. Good retention and lacing.

Smells like malt and licorice.

Tastes dark-chocolatey with a touch of anise..

Very light carbonation and thick mouthfeel, smooth. For as dark as it is, it is a "lighter" stout.

Appearance - Pours midnight black with a mocha colored finger width head. Fair retention, leaving a broken layer of microbubbles on the surface. Small, spotty lacing with fair retention.

Smell - Plenty of layered chocolate character; milk, touches of baker's and a bit of fudge. Hints of roast.

Taste - Doesn't live up to the aroma, unfortunately, but far from disappointing. Moderate roast and chocolate flavors, offset by light anise character. Touches on smoke. The Result is a sweet, very approachable stout.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body, with moderate carbonation. Remarkable smoothness, which might be this beer's best trait.

Overall - A solid, near exceptional American stout. More sweet than roasty, with great smoothness and a remarkably drinkable body. Has the flavor of an imperial stout, without the punch. As much as I'm enjoying it, it's strangely one of those remarkable beers that I wouldn't miss if I never had it again, mostly due to cost, availability, and the quality of other stouts more readily available to me.

Got this bottle in a trade with Cristopher. He got Westvleteren from me and i got some of the brews out of his region. This was one of them.

To start with; i had some high expectation but this beers let me down a bit at the first sip. But then i looked at the ABV and i understood why. The beer is too low on ABV to become a real stout.

Poured in my Struise small chalice the beer starts good. Pitch dark fluid with a very nive head. After some time very nice lacing in the glass. The smell is kind of fresh with some hints of coffee, not much though.

Taste is is ok but with the lack of alcohol the beer missen that something.

Bottle dated 12/10/12. Poured into a shaker pint. Consumed at about cellar temperature.

Appearance: Pours with about a finger of a brown head that doesn't last long. Very dark with a bit of ruby on the edges. Your typical stout, really.

Smell: A bit sweeter than the taste, and even some dark fruits. Plenty of chocolate and coffee, and any other sort of word that's used to describe most stouts -- it's here in Kalamazoo Stout.

Taste/feel: Throw out the dark fruits and some of the sweetness, the taste is much more of roasty malts, with traces of coffee and chocolate as well. A stout that's not powerfully flavorful, so it's really quite easy drinking. The feel is about middle of the road -- it's pretty lightly carbonated, and the beer's not thick or thin.

Kalamazoo Stout is a solid Bell's beer. I'm not a big fan of stouts, but this one's fine and good. It's not super big, roasty, and thick like some other stouts out there (or Imperial Stouts, of course), but that's not a bad thing. Not extremely memorable, but still a good one. Definitely overrated, though, in my opinion.

A-Pours the typical impermeable black color of a stout with a creamy one finger toffee colored head with good retention. Foam coats the entire glass as I sip and leaves small patches of foam behind. Foam cascades slowly down the glass when i stir.

S-Roasted malts, toasted nuts, burnt oaky smell with touches of sweet licorice. I'm also picking up traces of a rubbery phenolic smell in the back of the nose.

T & MF-Toasted nuts and roasted malts make up the front of the taste as it fades into a bittersweet finish of licorice and a burnt oaked finish. Pretty tasty. Mouthfeel is thick but is crisp on the swallow but not too overcarbonated. Very satisfying as the thickness of a stout is present but is balanced well with a crisp finish

O-So far, my favorite Bell's brew. It's the only one that exceeded my expectations. Subtle, but the flavors all make a good presence. The body is thick and chewy but it finishes crisp. Very satisfying brew.

Appearance: dark brown in color, nearly black with a tiny pinky finger mocha colored head. Head retention and lacing are minimal to non-existent.

Smell: Smells of roasted malts, and a hint of coffee and chocolate when sniffing.

Taste: Roasted malts, hint of coffee and chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Light body with an average amount of carbonation.

Overall: A good, light beer!

Appearance: Dark chocolate with an ample light brown head.

Aroma & Taste: Had a big chocolate and toffee aroma. The beer was heavy and full bodied with a long finish. The chocolate and toffee mashed well over slight molasses and spice undertones. The long finish added to the enjoyment.

Aromas of coffee and chocolate enticed as a thick, foamy head formed on the thick, dark black beer. The taste is very roasted malty and sweet, with notes of coffee and chocolate. The aftertaste is pleasantly sweet. This stout was so sweet to me that I could see myself drinking this as a digestif/dessert type beer. But the roasty stoutness complements the sweetness well.
