as much as i never really drink or seek out american barleywines, i was awfully impressed with this limited release from bells. all michigan ingredients, very cool, and its really hoppy, bitter above grain sweetness and thickness in both smell and taste, very alive for the style, in no need of cellaring, and really clean for what it is. different than others not in its appearance, which fits the bill pretty spot on, but in its balance of hops and grain. these are usually sweet and sticky, and even in the american style ones, tends to only throw in hops for the sake of being bitter. but in this beer the hops almost switch places with the grain, making the beer feel light and fresh, astonishingly so for the style, which i just love. more like an imperial ipa of sorts. the booze is still pretty warm as it finishes, but with grassy hops instead of malt sugars, its more palatable for me, especially in higher doses. a bottle to share several ways, but a unique take on a style that doesnt often sweep me off my feet.

Bottle shared tonight by Michael, thanks for the opportunity!
Pours a slightly hazy light brown dark amber color with a smallish off white head that dissipates slowly. Aromas of brown sugar and caramel with a bit of light fruit and light floral hop. The flavor follows the aroma quite well rice dark sugary maltiness with a hint of alcohol fruit and just enough hop flavor to balance. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation. Nice barleywine, I'm glad I got to try it.
