12oz. bottle poured into a tulip-style glass. It pours a very dark brown color with half a finger of caramel head. There is no lacing in sight. The smell is a powerful blend of hops and alcohol. Just a hint of caramel left behind. The taste starts with roasted malt, very rich. Then the hops hit you, very sharp. I mean these are some ass kicking hops. A bit of alcohol left on the tongue. The mouthfeel is super thick and heavy. The drinkability is fairly good for a 10.5% beer. I really see this beer aging beautifully, but only time will tell.

Great to get a chance to drink this even down here in NC,pours a deep hazy amber with a nice tight white head atop.Deep raisin aromas with a touch of alcohol and brown sugar lingering.Big chewey mouthfeel lends itself well to the raisiny,caramel sweet feel to this beer.Almost like a nutty port sipping finish not much noticable hop just a light herbal note,a damn fine beer Iam glad I tried it.

Appearance – This could not have looked better. The body is a deep, dark brown with a tinge of orange coloring and has lots of sediment. The head is a light creamy brown and full of itself. It showed great retention and left big puddles on top of the liquid as well as some beautiful lacing along the inside of my Chimay glass.

Smell – Oh, this is rank. The alcohol-soaked wood is in full force here. This ale just reeks of oak. The hops are extremely sharp and brutal. The malts are heavily-toasted and full of rich caramel along with other refined sugars.

Taste – The huge oaky flavors come out nicely. This is definitely a big beer. The bourbon booze character rings throughout the tongue. I can pick up some incredible fruits. In particular, the Bing cherries, tobacco, prunes, and dates are very strong.

The malt base is killer. It is laden with heavy sugars. Cane has run amock here, infiltrating almost every aspect of this flavor profile. This ale is rich, rich, rich.

Mouthfeel – Almost full in the body with a strong presence of alcohol. The flavors are so extreme that your taste buds will work overtime.

Drinkability – Today is a personally special day, and I wanted to celebrate it with something extraordinary. This Bell’s offering was just the ticket.

Comments – I can’t imagine a finer ale that feloniousmonk could have included in this trade from heaven. He really outdid himself with this one. It was such a treat and so nice to celebrate my special occasion with this ale. A big, huge, BA thanks to Da Man Wit Da Plan. Cheers, bro!

Thickest, haziest beer I’ve seen in a very long time. Thick dark brown mahogany with no head. About 2% of the total body appears to consist of large white flakes of yeast. Very intimidating. Sludgy.

Aroma is loaded, strong, and complex. Rum and molasses, raisons, loads of caramel malt, wood, dirt, figs, sherry, and damp walnuts. Mild hop presence.

Beyond full bodied and full flavored. Boozey caramel and boozier dark fruits blended with damp earth, nuts, oak leaves, rye and raisons. Thick and luscious body, creamy and milk shake like.

Surprisingly drinkable.

I've decided to drink my lone bottle of this brew today and I'm very excited as to what it holds in store for me. The Batch 6000 pours from the bottle a deep, dark brown, bordering on black with maroon hues that come out when held to the light. A nice half inch of creamy, sticky khaki head sits above the brew. Aromas begin with rich, lush caramel maltiness, rum raisin and a myriad of dark fruity tones, notably cherry. A wisp of alcohol with brown sugar, a touch of cocoa and a suprisingly strong piney, resinous hop presence. It appears this will be one tasty barleywine here.

First sip brings a rush of rich, creamy caramel, nutty maltiness across the mouth. Interspersed within lies a melding of chocolate, dark fruits, cherries, brown sugar and a bit of alcohol. Amongst the overall sweetness, there is a nice blast of piney, resiny hop bitterness that lends a tasty end to each sip of this fine brew. An enjoyable barleywine from Bell's that has held up quite nicely seeing they've brewed over 1000 batches since this was created. I dunno how much longer this will last, it's too bad I don't have a few more bottles left so I could see for myself!!

Mouthfeel is creamy with a sold medium body. Light carbonation makes it easy to drink and each sip leaves me wanting another. The ABV is really non existant in the taste and I could possibly have another after this! I'd like to see Bell's put a barleywine into their seasonal rotation...I think it would round out thier already stellar lineup quite nicely! Thanks to SheepNutz for this one. I'm really glad to have been able to try it.

I have a tendancy to dig through my closet cellar on occassion and pull out "special" beers for no apparent reason. This is one of those instances. I was going to have this a week ago but my stuffy nose would not have allowed this beer any justice. Received from feloniousmonk in a BIF last summer...thanks for the opportunity...onto the review...

Dark, murky brew. Cloudy, coke colored with some reddish highlights. Yeast floaties drift around (I'm a fan of the yeast). One finger khaki colored head. Reduced a bit after a few minutes but still sits in a thick layer on the top. Really grips the sides of the glass on the way down.

Amazing aroma. Raisins and prunes and muscadines (only y'all southern BAs will know that one), caramel with a touch of brown sugar. A touch of alcohol slowly comes forward as well. The taste is uttery smooth. Super balanced. Lightly roasted malts play well with some sweet dark fruits. Chocolate flavors intermingle. Caramel sweetness as well. A bit of resin and pine hops are still noticable.

Mouthfeel is just amazing. One of the most full bodied brews I've ever had. Its creamy smooth on the tongue. It coats every bit of my mouth with its delicious flavor. I dont know what else I could ask for. Drinkability is really good. I want several of these but this is a sipper that you could only have a possible of one extra on a night. But its such an amazing beer its hard not to want more.

Pours a thick, somewhat syrupy, murky opaque brown/garnet. Slight cascading effect leads to a fluffy, off white, foam head that seems to crawl down the side of the glass.

Aromas of dark ripe fruits, raisins, fresh grist, hints of oxidation and suggestions of pine.

Smooth, thick, syrupy mouthfeel. Firm bodied. Big, sweet, malt profile of caramel, toasted malts, dates, juicy dark ripe fruits, burnt raisins, toffee, vanilla, and burnt sugar in the background. Earthy/herbal. Spicy and assertive alcohol presence, very cordial-like at times. Splash of citrusy bitterness breaks through the heavy malt character providing some much needed balance. Pine and sap. Some wood, wet paper; more signs of oxidation. Lingering spice and wood in slightly dry finish.

Crikey! This is one powerful and sweet ass brew! A headache waiting to happen! Very interesting and complex, perhaps a bit too oxidized, but still very enjoyable.

Batch 6000 poured a dark ruby brown with small particulates. It had a thick creamy off-white head with fairly fine bubbles, that retained well - almost stout-like. It had a very complex flavor that's difficult to describe, there's a lot going on! It had a sweet malty start with a very hoppy finish - almost too much so. It also had a strong alcohol taste (almost mediciney) with hints of toffee, caramel and slight citrus. It was a nice full-bodied beer. I can appreciate the complexity of this beer, but it wouldn't make a good session beer.

This beer is like candy, after you get your fix there is no need to go back to have an other bag of it in the same sitting. The lace is like dried sea foam left on the beach after a big storm. So creamy smooth in the mouth. Smells of rum raisin and caramel with a figgy aroma as well. Lots of malt flavor with a scathing sweetness that is smacked a couple of times by a stern hop bitterness and flavor.

Perhaps the most amazing brew to come from Kalamazoo Brewing and perhaps one the most amazing brews in the US. Shame it is a limited batch.

Kudos to mentor for sending this one my way. I love the style of old ales. This one pours a slow, thick, opaque, dark brown body with a minimal beige head. Minimal patch lace.
Classic old ale aromas of molasses, tobacco, brown calf leather, raisins, dates, and chocolate covered cherries. A note of Cognac.
Mouthfeel is rich, thick, and full bodied. Almost syrupy ethanol laden cough syrup, but more even. Ideal, for style.
Taste opens with a heavy and thick malt presence of molasses, alcohol soaked prunes and raisins, and some cinnamon spiked orange. Earthy hops lend a pleasant diversion, before a note of plum brandy asserts for a few moments. Pine and grapefruit hops rescue the finish, leaving an aftertaste of ripe Bing cherries dipped in Calvados( a French apple brandy).
Definitely, the best American old ale I've sampled in the past year. Very complex, and highly recommended.

12 oz bottle, no brewery dating. Poured dark amber, very minimal head, left intricate lacing. Alcohol and malt in nose. Heavy body, dense sweet maltyness, a boatload of hops come racing foward. Smooth and coating to the entire mouth, throat and stomach. Alcohol obvious in nose, mouth and brain. Superior example of the style.
Thanks to my wife for bringing this one back from Michigan.

Pours a deep brown with a two finger head. Nice lacing. Lots of floaties in the beer.

Smells of malt and horse stables.

YUM. Malts abound and sweet. Nice brew.

Creamy feel in the mouth. Reminds me very much of Stone's products.

I was trying to think of what kind of beer I was looking to drink tonight and this fit the bill. Chewey, substantial and malty.

Bell's need to make themselve's available in Massachusetts.

Many thanks to ZAP for this one among many fine brews.
Pours a cloudy, dark brown w/ a full finger of cocoa-colored head...lacing is quite thick and has decent cling.
The smell is fantastic...sweet raisins, vanilla, sugarcane, and a hint of rum.
Taste is more of the same, but with a hint of smoked goodness...and some bitterness in the finish as well. Very well balanced w/ a thick mouthfeel...finishing up quite dry.
The alcohol is very well hidden in this fine offering from Bells...making the drinkability slightly above average for the style.
I see all of you lucky bastards who get the chance to try this one on tap...I am extremely jealous.
One more fine example as to why the Bell's is one of the best breweries in the country...on great craft brew after another.

Murky brown with red hues. Off white head that leaves bits of lacing. Hops are fading, but still present. Caramel sweetness and toffee with what's left of the piney hops coming together for a wonderful smell. A small amount of oxidation comes through, some sherry, sweet malt, and still a little bit of pine in the taste. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Really good beer that is still holding up great. I'm glad I've gotten to try this at the Great Taste and that hey_kevin shared a bottle of it; wish I had some of my own.

Following the virus-induced funk I'd been in for over a week, I needed something to get me back into the swing of things. I selected the 6000 to kick-start my road to recovery.

Appearance:The Batch 6000 poured a deep and murky copper in color. Wispy thin layer of off-white head initially bubbles up but quickly subsides.

Smell: Aromas are that of dark fruits soaked in whiskey, malty caramel sweetness, and some spicy hops for attitude.

Taste: Flavor is huge: A truckload of hops slams into your palate, wrecking any use of it for the near future. Stuffed in the bed of the hops truck is a hefty dose of brown sugary sweetness that spills over the wreckage of your palate. Just a hint of alcohol appears at the end.

Mouthfeel is *thick* and chewy. A coating of the palate with the smoothness that is wonderful, yet there is also a tasty, oily slather of hop goodness that is left on the lips. Excellent.

Drinkability: Takes a slight hit as this beer tastes a little on the raw side. A bit of harshness compromises what otherwise was a great beer to enjoy. I've got several more of these in the "cellar" and I'm curious to see how this changes over a year or so.

Slightly hazy, murky orange-brown. A hesitant beige head bubbles up gently and fades quickly. Inviting aroma of sweet and bready malts, toffee and diacetyl, some raisin and fig, and a hint of the ABV to come. Flavor is rich and chewy. Substantial malt upfront with deep brown sugar and molasses. Finishes full and satisfying with a clean citrus peel hop bite, along with some bitter chocolate and espresso. Rich and thick malts linger. Alcohol vapors rise up the sides of the mouth, warming as they go. Mouthfeel is fat and full and creamy and rich. This is really good, thanks to Brent for sharing.

Pours a dusky brown with a small taupe head.

Smells slightly candi sweet with a rich leathery nose.

Lots of very biting spices overwhelm my tounge, with a bit of chewy plum malt held at bay by the overwhelming rush and burn of leather. A bit caustic. Mellows a bit as my tounge gives up to the alcohol.

Mouthfeel is a lot like grinding pepper on your tounge and gargling with old spice. It's large.

This puppy needs a couple of years in the dark.

Another much anticipated "batch"...

Thick pour, dark nutmeg brown with giant yeast chunks locked in a suspension that looks like slow movement in the asteroid belt. Rock solid 1/2 inch head of ochre suds and incredibly complex laces. Forbidding aroma, steeped in hops but fiercely cinnamon toast in backbone. Mouthfeel is like maple syrup with lower than normal carbonation. Tons going on here, the malt is throat catching in spiciness but with solid elements of plum and raisin. The hops are massive, peek out early rather than waiting for the close. The smell works well to give extra sweetness and to help balance overall. Cripes, this brew is a stew, characteristic Bell's yeast tones and thickened to a gravy. The thick and somewhat gloppy (almost greasy) texture -- like Batch 5000 -- is my only question mark. Its slightly unsettling to me when I think about it too much. And of course, two bottles are set aside, right next to two bottles of Batch 5000 in the closet. Skoal!

Appearance: Deep chestnut brown hue with some ruby highlights, nice sized tan head leaves behind lacing in thin strips. Aroma: Insane pine cone scented hops, some Tomahawk like ones as well the woody and piney rich hop character with one hell of a sugary malt profile as well. Taste: Incredible wave of hoppiness comes over the palate with great caramel piney tones very big massive flavors here awesome. This is one big beer loads and loads of malty and what a hop profile incredibly flavorful. Mouthfeel: Another one of these beers that have so much texture and body that they're only a few steps away from being gelatinous, almost cloyingly big I think this one needs tucked away for some aging. Drinkability: Like I said big brew, in malts, hops, and alcohol. If you have more than one please cellar this baby right now it's roaring with flavors that come at the senses like a runaway train. One at a time, please so big just enjoy and let warm up.

Beneath the stained mustard sky, an autumnal, violent plum dawn draws down upon the shore.
The predator mist carries orchard fragrances. Pink grapefruits. Rusty freighters. Humid, sticky sweetness of maples and brown sugar.

Welcome to the December gale.

Houses of flavor are built from this very maple timber. Sturdy houses. Safe from bluster and ballast, though not unaffected by the torrent outside. From their sugar windows are viewed scenes of caramel rock outcropping besieged by pummeling and unrelenting sequences of raw, icy grapefruit waves. Arranged with the mathematical regularity of a spiteful God. They just keep coming. And coming. The distant toffee lighthouse and its penetrating, protective prune-emitting beam are shrouded and pounded by wall after wall of cold, bitter fury and sinister bombast.

The hop furor subsides gradually.

Watching again from the window, the remnants of the tempest drip down from the overhangs with black cherry runoff. Everything metal begins to rust. The process, normally accomplished over years, happens almost instantly. Decaying metal is offset by the warm confines of the cozy maple-sugar abode. Light is provided by a warming sherry blaze in the hearth. As rough is the weather gets on the outside, it is positively comfortable inside.

The lake slowly comes back into view, with its ghostly shapes shifting and reforming. Eerily thick in its murk, but airy and sustainable and reassuring.

Remember weathering this one, my lad. It is surely a tale to tell your grandchildren. And for them to pass down. Generation after generation.

The foghorn echoes in the distance, sending chills down the collective spine.

Sweet with cocolate coffee. Alcohol spice but 10.5% disguised by flavour. Smooth. Was drinkable with food, but turkey and veggies was not the right choice on my part, but Bell's non-pasteurization a concern and did not trust it's robustness for a further 24 hours until I could fridge it .Cloudy dark mahagony colour. Spice was lemon and possibly pear and pienapple.

Carefully poured off of its sediment its still a slightly hazy mahogany beneath a short cap of orange-tinted tan. Aging may help to compact the sediment and leave a clearer ale with a less yeast influenced flavor. The head retention is surprisingly good considering the alcohol content, and it maintains a thin surface covering throughout most of the glass that leaves some spotty lace. The nose is astounding! It's fresh and vibrant with hop notes of resinous pine and spruce, orange, lemon peel, and pineapple; as well as a yeast-derived fruitiness that combines with the malt to deliver cherries, prunes and raisins above some light cocoa and caramel. Some limited alcohol also adds a touch of spiciness. The body is full and it's very fine, natural carbonation is just enough to awaken the tastebuds while leaving it velvety and smooth. The flavor delivers the same brilliant hop attack that the nose does, but it's wrapped in rich, soft maltiness. Caramel tones dominate where the hops let the malt come through, and there are only hints of cocoa and chocolate. The fruitiness remains, however, and dark fruits wander in and out at the edges. Some odd notes of wood and honey - and even banana - can sometimes be found as well. It's quite complex but also unrestrained in its youthful state... a year's aging will clearly make a huge difference in rounding it's unbridled character! It finishes surprisingly dry considering its girth, and pineyand citrusy hop flavors linger on the palate along with an austere but non-menacing bitterness. Most impressive! This is a take-no-prisoners barleywine that's best reserved for those who know what they're getting into!

I have wanted to try this sucker for a long time...autumnaldave offered me a cash prize if i drank the whole pint in 10 minutes but i had to savor it as i will probably never see it again once Maduro takes it off

appearance: this thing is a hazy pulpy monster, amber-mahogany body with a nice foam lace

smell: pungent hop presence has weathered the years impressively, thick caramel malt, dripping pine

taste: pungent and bitter hops still strong, chewy caramel malt base, spice, light rye, buttery, matured booze, woody, raisins and other dark fruit. glad i got to try this one this long after the release

mouthfeel: nice full body, a hoppy milshake and a real treat

drinkability: definitely a sipper

Appearance: It's reddish-amber in color. Head was off-white and about two fingers. Good retention and lacing.

Smell: Initially, it's citrusy sweet (grapefruit) and hoppy. Spices creep in (a little clove and cinammon). Caramel-toffee malts smell sweet and seem to balance it out. Alcohol is noticeable on the tail.

Taste: Citrus flavors (mostly grapefruit) are sweet and a little bitter. It is somewhat spicy. Hops kick in and provide a slight bitter factor. Caramel-toffee malts add more sweetness and balance out the hops. It is very well-balanced. Slight alcohol burn on the way down.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's medium bodied to thick. Carbonation is very good. It is strong and a bit limited in drinkability. Nonetheless, this is a very smooth, fine tasting beer. Definitely recommended.

Pours out with a strong tan head settling out over tawny, hazy, chunky deep reddish/amber liquid. The nose is concentrated fresh hop cone aromas, piney, floral and intoxicating. I can't detect much in the way of maltiness at all, this is all about the hops, baby! The taste is pure unadulterated hop juice, bitter, flowery and pungent...a joy to inhale & inbibe. Some sweet juicy maltiness shows up here as an afterthought just to keep this from being anything more than a hoppy broth. Finishes up thick, chewy and uber-substantial. A monsterous B-wine that hides it's massive alcohol well, yet possesses tremendous flavor and complexity...a six packs' worth of flavor crammed into a 12 oz. bottle!
