Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
With Neptune, our Planets Series comes to an end. Inspired by one of Larry Bell’s old homebrew recipes and the music of Gustav Holst, this complex, strong and spiced Imperial Stout offers prominent herbal notes along with flavors of chocolate, roasted malt, licorice/anise and pepper with a touch of heat. Reminiscent of a mystical creation brewed in days gone by, this beer is a good candidate for aging due to the robust characteristics of its ingredients.

SPICES: Star anise, dried cayenne, raisins, dates, black pepper, hickory bark, dandelion root, nutmeg, grains of paradise, fenugreek seeds and dates

Also brewed with maple syrup, molasses and cane sugar in addition to hops and malt.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle poured into a Cigar City snifter. Bottled on 7/10/15, making this about 5 weeks old.

A: Pours nearly pitch black. Soft, dark brown head around the edges. Medium body.

S: Honey, pepper, cherry, raisin, dark chocolate, vanilla. Just a brilliant-smelling beer. Only thing missing might be some barrel or bourbon, but even then, that might overpower this beautiful aroma. Very complex, could smell for hours.

T: Unlike the aroma, things get muddy here. There's so much going on, it's hard to tease every flavor out. Not much up front, usual chocolate and roast notes. Maybe some honey sweetness. Next thing is the pepper bite in the finish. Quite spicy and warm, but not overpowering. Bitter on the finish as well. Aside from that, it's just a conglomerate of spices.

M: Full, well carbonated. 9% hidden well. Nice burn on the finish, not too hot.

O: Ah, the final beer of the planets series. So sad. It's been an awesome run, and boy do we have quite the beer to finish it out. The description on the label is ridiculous. There's nine official ingredients on the bottle, and even more listed on the website. That's insane. I think it works when it comes to the aroma, because it's awesome and very complex and deep and everything works well together. But the flavor just gets really muddy. It's pretty much just imperial stout, with lots of spices thrown in and then a hot, peppery finish. To compare it, I'd say it's trying to be in the Mexican Hot Chocolate league with Prairie Bomb! and Abraxas, etc. Aroma-wise, this one competes. But the flavor is just too clogged with all these ingredients. Spice isn't dominating, but in the end, it's the only true flavor I can tease out. Not a bad beer overall, just probably couldn't pulled back on how much stuff was thrown in it. Didn't quite fit the music piece either. I was expecting some big bombastic conclusion that went all over the place. Not so much. As for my final thoughts on the series and where this beer ranks, I'll go: Saturn>Uranus>Mars>Neptune>Mercury>Jupiter>Venus. Middle of the pack for this one. Overall, I thought the series was brilliant and a great idea. Very fun and creative. Can't commend Bell's enough. It's been a great journey over the last year, trying these amazing beers and pairing them with the music. Each one had it's own personality. Would like to see Bell's and other breweries do fun things like this more often.

Recommendation: If you've gotten this far, you gotta finish off the series with this beer. On it's own though, it's still pretty good and I recommend it if you like the spiced stout.

Definitely tasting the cayenne pepper and the black pepper on the finish. Keeps my throat warm. Smooth stout feeling up front. Small maple in the middle. This beer didn't blow me away but was not a disappointment either. Picked this and a few other bells planets from my online site. Not sure if I would reorder yet.

On tap at Bells Eccentric Cafe
This one is a definite must try if you can find it.
So much good going on with this beer, right amount of heat from the peppers rounded out with the sweetness from the molasses. Everything works in perfect harmony. Wish Bells would keep this one around

12oz bottle, dated 7/10/15, opened on 8/30/16. Pours black with a small sized dark khaki head; some lacing on the glass. Complex smell of roasted malt, cocoa, spice, molasses, peat, and dark fruit; somewhat low intensity. The taste follows with roasted malt, cocoa, molasses, spice, maple syrup, and some dark fruit with much better intensity. Lightly bitter and fairly spicy. Some noticeable alcohol. The result of cellaring seems to be more cocoa in the smell/taste and extra smoothness. Below average body and carbonation for the style. Overall, the unique ingredients really shine and make for a delicious, spicy IS. It's complex and drinkable. Definitely worth trying if you can find it.

12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Look: Dark, reddish-black, absolutely opaque, with ~1/2 finger of head that quickly dissipated to just a ring around the edge, with no lacing.
Smell: If I try hard enough, I can pick up a hint of maple. Mostly just getting roasted malts and the cayenne.
Taste: Strangely subdued given the listing on the label, I mostly taste maple syrup and the cayenne pepper again. There's something about it that I rather enjoy, though.
Feel: Thick, almost syrupy, with minor carbonation. Reminiscent of maple syrup.

Overall: An interesting end to the Planet series.

An amazingly complex brew. Heats up as it warms. You can smell or taste all of the ingredients listed. Pretty amazing now, and I'm betting it will age really well.

This crazy bastard has been in my fridge for a couple months. Bottled on 7/10/15 and picked up for$1.99. Poured into a oversized snifter this brew is black as midnight with a finger of dark tan head atop. Cold the aroma is Big roasted malt with molasses sweetness present. As it warms the aroma becomes more boozy. I notice a hint of cayenne heat as well. Cold the taste is Big roasted, slightly smoky barley. I get some molasses with a black pepper note with a weak bite of cayenne. Finish is long with a woody, tannic character and hints of anise. The flavor does not change substantially as it warms.
Mouthfeel is moderately heavy with fairly high carbonation.
Overall there is a lot going on here. It's not a mess fresh. The heavily roasted malt is stout enough to carry all the other flavors and sensations present in this beer. Interesting beer. Prefer it colder as it is less boozy.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a fingernail of dark beige resting on top. Moderate lacing. I don't get much in the aroma other than molasses and cayenne pepper. I believe that to be due to the fact that there's cayenne pepper in here and peppers in beer in my experience tend to neutralize the other aromas. The taste has so many (10) spices and additives that it is very muddled. After multiple sips I was able to discern the black pepper, molasses, and maple syrup. I also picked out the dates and dandelion root. I can definitely get the heat from the cayenne pepper in my throat and on my chapped lips. It's not overdone, but you are aware of it.

L: Pours deep, dense dark brown producing a 1” finely bubbled tan foam cap that suggest a nitro beer. Recedes to a very thick film after 4 minutes. Very lacy.

S: Smells like a rich, malty, molasses, maple cake loaded with spices. Pepper, raisin, cocoa and coffee aromas stand out.

T: It is a complex, layered palate with maple, molasses sweetness with a nice dose of pepper heat that is just enough to let you know it is there but not too much to over power. Another layer of root beer is supported by a layer of dates and raisins.

F: A full bodied beer with medium carbonation and an exceptional nitro-like creaminess

O: This beer is a balance of boldness and restraint loaded with diverse flavors that work surprisingly well together and avoid tasting muddy.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice. Bottled on 07/10/15.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of tan head that settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A roasty and spicy dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate and an array of spices. Dark roasted barley malt with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, biscuit, and yeast. Big mix of spices including hints of anise black licorice, peppers, and nutmeg. Sweet scent of molasses and syrup. Dark fruit hints of raisin, dates, and fig. A really good complex aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and spicy dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate and lots of spice. Dark roasted barley malt with roasty notes of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, biscuit, toast, and yeast. Lots of spices in the mix. Notes of black licorice from anise, black and cayenne peppers, and nutmeg. Sweet taste of molasses and some maple syrup. Dark fruit undertones of fig, raisin, and dates. A very good roasty and spicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, chewy, and slightly syrupy. A little heat is felt from the spices.

Overall: A very good take on a spiced up Imperial Stout. Good roasty dark malt notes with a nice moderately hot kick of spices. A great way to end this series.
