Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
A smooth, toasty brown ale with hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Bottled 8-23-17
Brown/orange/amber clear with a 1" beige colored head. Head has good retention and falls slowly - nice lacing left behind.
Brown sugar, caramel, grainy malt, light chocolate tone. Hint of a grassy hop, maybe? Smells clean.
Malty, with the flavors coming thru same as mentioned in the aroma...maybe a hint of fruitiness (yeast maybe?) balanced though, very drinkable.
Between medium and full mouthfeel. Carbonation seems lighter and fits the beer. Finishes dry which is awesome....
Enjoyed this and happy to have it in TX!

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter via a friend from work---Thanks Randy!
This mighty nice brown pours a lightly chill hazed red tinged brown with medium clarity
and a nice head of khaki foam that settles to a thick ring and layer with fantastic lacing.
Nose of roasted malts with a touch of chocolate. Flavors exceed the nose with deep
roasted notes bordering on coffee with touches of chocolate and mild char notes with
a balanced herbal hop note. Nice mouth feel; medium body, medium carbonation, and a
roasted malt finish balanced with hops.

Overall, as always a solid offering from a great brewer.

Cheers

Look: pours a dark copper brown color with an off white head

Smell: slightly malty, extremely faint

Taste: toasted malt, light caramel, bit of spice

Feel: medium carbonation, fairly smooth

Overall: has hints of an Oktoberfest, definitely a good fall beer, malts and accompanying sweetness are the main attraction here, overall a pretty good beer

12 oz. bottle poured into nonic
(8/22/2017 packaged date)

L: red-copper, mostly clear but does show some sediment; pushes up about 3/4-inch head of offwhite foam that sticks a little

S: cinnamon rolls that are very light on the cinnamon; maple syrup; peach/apricot kolache ... lot of sweetness in the nose, only a hint of the char-wood note in the flavor

T: roasted malt bites right away, almost burnt/charred wood ... very woody; malt sweetness shows up more and more as it warms and you get into the glass, and while it's definitely sweet, that good char-wood note permeates each sip

F: almost heavy enough to call a middleweight, good carbonation to fill it out even more but it also has a nice ale slickness to it

O: so simple yet so beautiful, a perfect roasted-wood delivery system that is super tasty and super easy to drink; I bought a six-pack, plan on buying two more and keeping around for the fall

Pours a clear darkish brown with an off white head. Smells of malts and caramel. Tastes of sweet malt, nuts, caramel, and toffee. Medium-light in both body and carbonation. Overall a decent brown ale.

Pours a dark brown color with a thick, 2-3 finger light tan head. Smells of nuts and a little bit of cocoa powder, touch of herbal hops. Taste is nuts, brown sugar, some light bitterness with a little spice to it, some notes of coffee. Medium body. Complex brew, certainly tastier and more complex than brown ales are often given credit for.

Most of the slightly hazy rich brown beer pours out of the 16 oz can into a Duvel glass with a 1 1/2" light tan head that recedes slowly leaving lots of spiderweb and legs of lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping cleans the side of the glass to leave behind some small patches of lacing. Throughout most of the beer there’s a thin island foam on the liquid and some patches lacing on the sides of the glass.

The aromas include some cocoa and some nutty character from the malt. There’s also just a hint of some spicy hops.

As expected from the nose, the flavors feature some chocolate, some lightly roasted nutty malt but also include a bit of sweetness from the malt. There’s some definite light bitterness in the background that has a bit of a spicy character to it.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied but smooth and creamy with the fine bubbled moderate carbonation.. The finish begins as the sweetness starts to fade leaving the chocolate and lightly roasted nutty malts slowly following. The very ending has some noticeable slightly spicy bitterness as it goes dry.

As expected from Bell’s this is a well made beer and one that I’m enjoying. It’s very drinkable but also the interplay of flavors is complex and balanced enough that it is also an interesting brown ale that I’ll be having again once in a while. Definitely a recommendable brown ale.

Been a while since I had a Brown Ale. I can't think of a better brewery to choose from in Bells.
Best brown pours a dark brown/mahogany collar with a modest head. It soon dissipates into a thin ring like collar.
There is a rich malt aroma consisting of sweet dark caramel, nutty, and biscuity. There is even a hint of dank herbal hops that are IPA like. A light roast gives off a coffee aroma that is Porter like.
Medium bodied in the mouth with a mild sweetness. Big, even slightly robust malt profile with a silky and creamy feel. Flavors of dark bread crust, dark caramel, toffee, toasted malt, modest hops bitterness for balance. A light roast imparts coffee flavors and blurs the lines between brown ale and Porter. Creamy malt depth with a moderate carbonation. Spicy and slightly sticky hops flavor.
Complex and soulful. A dynamic brew. Who said Brown Ale is boring?
