Style: Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally conceived along the lines of a Belgian Dubbel, Hell Hath No Fury... Ale morphed during development into something entirely different. Blending a pair of Belgian abbey-style yeasts into a recipe more akin to a roasty stout, Hell Hath No Fury... Ale offers up warm, roasted notes of coffee & dark chocolate together with the fruity & clove-like aromas.

Bottle poured into a large snifter

L- almost black. Nice khaki head. But don't fall in love with it, it doesn't stick around. No lacing.

S- dark chocolate and cherries

F- very full bodied. Great oily rich mouthfeel

T- chocolate, licorice. Drinks like a stout. Nice bitterness. Leaves a nice subtle alcohol warmth at the end

O- very enjoyable. This is not the first time I've had this, and I'm enjoying it a little more this time around. The aging might help mellow out the flavors. I remember the licorice being a little strong for my taste the first few times around. This one is almost exactly a year old, according to the date on the bottle. If you don't like it the first time around, put it in the back of your fridge and forget about it for a while.

Pours a not quite black, exceptionally dark brown, somewhat thin looking beer. A hint of light survives around the edges. Not much head to speak of. A gathering of brown bubbles begins to form but there's no legs.

It smells like a Dubbel, with lots of caramel malt. Smells like a soft drink. Really, not much else in the nose.

Coffee and chocolate finally make an appearance. You'd think they would pair well with the caramel malt, but it's like the lost direction with this beer and forgot what they wanted it to be. Certainly, it doesn't taste bad. Far from it, just a bit confusing.

Being a Dubbel, it's not going to be all that viscous, but it's still a bit loose for something with coffee and chocolate in it. It's pretty smooth, to be sure, but I wanted something better held together. There's plenty of sweetness up front and a lingering bitter finish for balance. The almost 8% ABV is hidden and it's fairly easy to drink.

It's a good beer, just not great. Decent alcohol, lots of flavors, and easy to drink. I just want more body.

12 oz bottle, about 6 months old

very dark brown, and foamy cream colored head. aroma is bready, some raisin, earthy. taste is balanced - some caramel sweetness but not too much. depth of flavors is good. medium to thicker mouthfeel. not sure I'd peg this as a Dubbel, but definitely a tasty dark ale.

Dark brown to light black in color with a minimal of light seeping through. There's a fingernail of tan colored head surrounding the rim of the glass and covering about half of the middle. There's plenty of light sediment throughout the body. I smell raisins, black licorice, dark Belgian candy sugar, and a hint of molasses and smoke. I taste dark raisins, Belgian candy sugar, alcohol, and fig. The body is slightly warm with alcohol and lightly chewy.
