Style: Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally conceived along the lines of a Belgian Dubbel, Hell Hath No Fury... Ale morphed during development into something entirely different. Blending a pair of Belgian abbey-style yeasts into a recipe more akin to a roasty stout, Hell Hath No Fury... Ale offers up warm, roasted notes of coffee & dark chocolate together with the fruity & clove-like aromas.

From tasting notes 10/07/17, had on-tap at Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI

Appearance - Served in a 12oz tulip, black with cola brown highlights where light can penetrate. Thin, broken layer of suds sit atop with a fair sized ring wrapping around the edge of the glass. No lacing.

Smell - Aroma is considerably roasty with a bit of acidic fruitiness.

Taste - Flavor shows more balance, as both the vinous-like and funky fruitiness takes some edge of the roast, unburying layers of chocolate and slightly smokey malt character. Hint of banana and clove spice once the brew warms. Finish is surprisingly clean before a bit of roast creeps back in, and it lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Close to full-bodied with slightly bitey carbonation. More slick than velvety in texture with a dry finish.

Overall - Odd brew. Unique. I can see why some wouldn't like this, but I find it a nice change of pace beer.

Pour is nearly jet black, no leakage anywhere, with a frothy tan head. Aromas include stone fruit (heavy), some coffee, and the Belgian yeast.

The taste is an amalgamation of flavors: some coffee, more chocolate, a lot of dark fruit - and the savior, the funky Belgian yeast.

This is not a dubbell, this is not a stout. It is just a very good beer.

Poured from bottle to tulip. Deep, blackish liquid with a couple fingers of mocha head atop. Lots of roasty, cocoa aromas initially come to the front, as it warms, dark fruits (raisins, figs, prune) peek through. On the tongue, there's coffee and cocoa, but those same dark fruits with clove and spice finishes. Thinner feel. Interesting hybrid style, worth picking up.

Poured from 12oz bottle into Stone Brewing Goblet. Bottled on September 8th, 2017.

L: Super dark mahogany and ruby, thin beige head fades quickly.

S: Smells very much of dark fruit, chocolate, lots and lots of fruit.

T: Again a lot of dark fruit, but more of a dark raspberry jam type, mostly because you get a toast flavor that comes with the roasty coffee flavors that open up late in the finish. Very interesting.

F: Medium body, low carbonation, roasty coffee lingers.

O: Pretty neat beer, not exactly to style but it has that X factor that makes it decently interesting to drink.

Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a half finger of head that fades into a tiny amount of lacing on the top. Smells of coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malts, touch of dark fruit. Taste is cloves, roasted malts, smoke, dark chocolate, and coffee. Medium-full body, minimal carbonation. Drinks closer to a stout, but either way it's very enjoyable. Quite complex flavors that meld nicely with a feel that isn't too heavy.
