What's old is new again as the brewers at Bell's pretend to be the historic Guinness brewery by turning an existing stout into something drier, tangier and lighter and daringly drinkable.
Dark brown and topped with a sheet of cottony white froth, Trumpeter's Stout leads with a roasty, toasty scent of smoldering embers, cocoa, nuttiness and a slight tangy note of yogurt. A scant sweetness glosses the tongue with a quick hit of caramel and sorghum on the front of the tongue.
A quick transition of taste happens as the low lying sweetness evaporated effortlessly off the tongue while the roasty remnants of malt leave a trail of dark roast coffee, bitter walnut, baker's chocolate and a hint of campfire on the tastebuds. Its balance comes from both piny hop resins and the tanginess of lactic acid that creates a surprising sense of drinkability and refreshment despite its robust flavor.
Medium light in body, the beer's arid substrate creates a light sense of ash on the after palate, reminding the brain of Guinness Stout, Kostritzer Schwarzbier and other light and roasty beers of the like.
