Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Double Cream Stout derives its name from its smooth, creamy texture, not the ingredients. Completely dairy-free, this stout blends ten different specialty malts to yield a remarkable depth of flavor. With only a touch of burnt notes, Double Cream Stout focuses on the softer, cocoa & espresso-like aspects of roasted malt.

Appearance: Dark brown. One finger of tan head.

Aroma: Coffee, dark chocolate

Taste: Very smooth and nicely balanced combination of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Hint of ashy flavors more noticeable at first, then less dominant. It says "sweet stout" on the bottle but thankfully it is not super sweet. It has just the right touch of sweetness to counter the ashy taste of the roasted malts.

Mouth feel: Medium body. Very nice.

Overall: Very nice, quaffable stout. Refreshing. Many of my favorite stouts weigh in at 11% or more alcohol by volume, whereas Bells Special Double Cream Stout has 6.10% per the Bell's website. Too bad this isn't a year-round offering from Bell's as I can imagine it being a staple in my fridge.

Appearance: Opaque dark amber body is surmounted by a small tan head, which slowly dissipates. Rings of lacing adorn the glass walls.

Aroma: Rich, very dense aromas of coffee, dark cocoa, bitter chocolate, and char.

Taste: The taste begins with a surge of cold coffee, and bitter cocoa. Later, notes of vanilla present. Late in the taste, bitter cocoa and coffee dominate the taste. Finishes with a linering note of bitter chocolate.

Mouth feel: Smooth, very full, velvety, with little carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A fabulous example of the style, it would be very pleasing on a cold Winter day.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off cap,, served in a New Belgium chalice.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep brown with an average tan head. Aroma slightly roasted malt, chocolate and coffee notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and with bitter notes.

A decent offering, not sure about the "double cream" part, but still good...

I liked it's dark coloration and tan head, though the smell was mostly run-of-the-mill. Mouthfeel was slightly creamy, very carbonated and a tinged astringent. I tasted chocolate notes, roasted malts, and a base of coffee grounds (I like coffee.) Anyway, it's not as creamy as advertised but it's still solid enough.
