Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell's history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Having this on-tap at Tremont Tap House at their annual Bell's Ruins Cleveland Beer Week tap take over event. This beer is a very dark brown, practically black color with a dark tan head that settles to a thick ring lining the inside of the glass and that sticks around for a long time. Nice lacing. Aromas of roasted malts along with cider, chocolate and of course oak bourbon notes that all blend together perfectly. Has a big toasted, bready, caramel malt settles that gives way to coffee and chocolate notes along with what I can only describe as eating a nice steak with some A1 sauce on it. And of course some bourbon. All the flavors blend together quite nicely too. Has a slightly crisp, mostly smooth, full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Dangerously drinkable for an 11.5%, as this belt he is, AVB beer. Has a fairly dry finish and after taste. Superb!

Pours black with a thin whitish head. Aroma-raisin, Bourbon, chocolate, dark malt. Taste- molasses, dark chocolate, raisin, Bourbon, a little black licorice. Mouthfeel- smooth and thick. Really feels good. Overall- this is a really tasty BA stout. Would compare well with any of em.

2016 bottle poured into a Crooked Stave snifter. Pours dark with a thin coffee-colored head. Nose is toffee, chocolate fudge, and dark fruits. Palate is rich, starting with toffee, vanilla, and roasted malts, and ending with chocolate fudge, dark fruits, hints of maple, and oak. Only moderately complex, but nonetheless ponderable and ultimately very good. It’s not FO or anything, but easily outshines KBS, Dragon’s Milk, Lagunitas Willett, or anything of that ilk. Would drink again.
