Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell's history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

2016 vintage.

Pours a shiny pitch black color. Thin head struggles to cover the top of the beer and dissipates almost as quickly as it appears. A thin ring of foam is noted along the outside of the beer.

Aroma has notes of oak, bourbon, roasted malts, creme, cocoa, and some sweet caramel. Very nice rich aroma that is quite strong.

Taste is immediately roasted malts with some cocoa and coffee notes and some semi-sweet creme. The oak and bourbon comes through clearly but without overtaking the underlying stout. Lovely balance between the roasted bitter Russian imperial stout, the addition of the sweet creme stout and the barrel aging.

Feel is sticky and full bodied albeit on the thinner side. Mild carbonation. Smooth finish and somewhat dry.

Overall a fantastic BA stout from Bells - one of the best.

Look is pitch black with absolutely no head.

Aroma is vanilla chocolate and caramel.

Taste is vanilla and coffee strong bourbon at the end.

2016. Been wanting to try this one out and my local World Of Beer got some 12oz bottles in at a RIDICULOUS price for a 12oz bottle. However, they offer a good discount if you buy it and take it home sealed, so I bit.

And glad I did.

Great fricking Stout. Could not even tell it was over 11%. Very smooth and carbonation is minimal. Must try if you like Stouts. I just hope I can get myself a 4 pack at retail next time.

Having this on-tap at Tremont Tap House at their annual Bell's Ruins Cleveland Beer Week tap take over event. This beer is a very dark brown, practically black color with a dark tan head that settles to a thick ring lining the inside of the glass and that sticks around for a long time. Nice lacing. Aromas of roasted malts along with cider, chocolate and of course oak bourbon notes that all blend together perfectly. Has a big toasted, bready, caramel malt settles that gives way to coffee and chocolate notes along with what I can only describe as eating a nice steak with some A1 sauce on it. And of course some bourbon. All the flavors blend together quite nicely too. Has a slightly crisp, mostly smooth, full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Dangerously drinkable for an 11.5%, as this belt he is, AVB beer. Has a fairly dry finish and after taste. Superb!
