On tap at The Comet in Northside.

12oz. in a straight tulip.

A: Pours pitch black with average single American stout viscosity. Short head on the pour with little retention and just a bit of lacing.

S: Pleasantly smoky. Assertive but not overpowering. Some light and juicy dark fruits, red grapes come to mind. Maybe a touch of vanilla mixed with the woody and peaky aromas.. or maybe the wood is oak, haha.

T/M: Very nice smoked flavor. Very assertive and any more might be too much but Bell's seemed to push it right to the edge without going over. The smoky, woody, peaky flavor balances... or at least, plays well with the dark fruit and light molasses flavors. A bit of spent coffee grounds in the back... not too strong, especially from the bitterness aspect, but just that little hint of robustness. More of that Baltic Porter type grape taste is detectable. It has a soft bitterness right at the beginning that doesn't quite make it to the end, lightly citrus-y. Body is only about medium, fitting into the style quite nicely. Limited carbonation lends a nice velvety smoothness.

D: Very drinkable. The Comet had a few different brews that I wanted to sample so I just stuck with one of these but I'm sure I'll head there tomorrow as well. Even with a potent smoke flavor, I could see myself with a glass of this after dinner, maybe even with a chocolate desert.

on tap, Maduro, pre-great taste of the midwest

Bells had 19 beers on tap, but i had sampled 17 already - this was one of the 2 newbies

appearance: served in a bells pint glass, solid dark mahogany body with really no head presence to speak of at all

smell: no smoke, lightly roasted malts, dry cocoa powder

taste: what a dissapointment. there is no smoke in this thing to speak of. I let 5 people try it and nobody got more than a hint of smoke. There is a meaty aftertaste but that is about it. It drinks like an average american with a nice chocolate malt presence but this falls well below the Bells standard

mouthfeel: medium-light

drinkability: easy

On tap at The Comet!
Pours black as night with a nice half inch, brown, frothy head. Smell is roasty and cocoa. Taste is chocolatey and roasty. Not as much roast as a Alaskan Smoked Porter, but a good amount there that compliments the stout well. Full, thick, viscous and creamy on the mouthfeel. Coats the glass well. This is a good stout for those not looking to drink a campfire. Subtle and welldone.

On tap at Meridian Pint's Night of Darkness event. Served in a snifter.

Pours a dark brown color and has a towering head, especially when considering the style. Considerable lacing is left on the sides of the glass as it falls down to a nice cap. The aroma brings some slightly-meaty smoke as well as a touch of roasted cocoa and malt.

The flavor is fairly smokey without too much else backing it up. There is a bit of a roasted malt character, though the roast lends itself more to the feel, which finds a nice spot short of too smokey. Drinkability was decent enough, but nothing about this one was all that remarkable. It was a pretty good take on the style, however.

Pours jet black, with a light tan head. In the aroma, chocolate and a small smokiness. In the taste, roasty coffee and a small smoke note. A small bite and medium to big mouthfeel, and a dry roasty malt and smoke aftertaste. Small smoke, big coffee taste, and a very nice stout.
