Style: Rye Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a hazy golden yellow to orange color with a quickly dissipating one finger white foamy head that left some stringy messy lacing. The smell had a sharp sweet citrus to piney and grassy hops over top of a light spicy rye malt. The taste was balanced between the spicy rye malt and light citrus bittering hops. There’s a lingering bitter sharp citrus aftertaste and leads to a decent sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was there and good for its style and has a nice lingering bitter to sweet citrus sharpness rolling over my tongue. Overall, I say, either an APA or a Rye Beer, whatever, let’s call it a very well done blend. I’d definitely have it again.

Batch #11705; Bottled on 1/15/13. 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours almost a hazy pale straw color, but it remains golden like the name suggests. The aromas are fine, but don't exactly slap you in the face. The word of the day with this one is earthy. The nose is calm and subtle, but still has a fruity aroma with orange peel leading the way. Very floral. The flavors start off extremely spicy and bitter, but it definitely cools down the more you drink it. Lots of pine needles and grass. The malts aren't heavy, but there. The rye is extremely noticeable in the flavors. Well done. Lots of black pepper in the in mix as well. This is an extremely rustic beer. Crisp and refreshing as well. The mouthfeel is wonderful, like most of Bell's beers. Medium-bodied, fluffy, creamy, active carbonation. The mouthfeel stands out and definitely makes this beer an easy drinker. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

Enjoyable beer. Bell's own description of the beer is spot on. Very earthy beer. It's definitely a unique take on the Pale Ale style. It also nails the rye aspect. The craftsmanship is there. I was just hoping for something a little bolder. This would be great for the summer.

A - Poured out a clear, bubbly, orange color with a one-finger, white head of foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of spicy rye bread with some caramel.

T - Some toffee and caramel sweetness. A very subtle spiciness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale.

O - This was really tasty. I wished that I had another one as soon as I finished the first.

Smitten is golden in color with alot of sediment floating about. A tall white head sits on top with gentile carbonation seen through the haze.
It smells dank and of oily hops, earthy too. Malts are present with spicy rye punching through.
Taste is mostly malts with a spicy and subdued sour taste from the rye. It's not that hoppy, some peak through with a floral and or earthy taste but very understated.
Drinks rather bitter with a dry finish.
I like this beer the rye is nicely balanced and not over powering which is good because I'm really not that big into rye beers. Plenty drinkable.

Semi-opaque golden hue, thinner head and decent carbonation. Aroma has lots of spicey rye malt with a little bit of grassy hops underneath. Taste is similar but a more pronounced hop bitterness, medium pine to compliment the rye. Pretty straightforward but well done.

12oz bottle poured into a tall tulip. Pours a pale gold with a yeasty haze. Thick lustrous white head rests on top. Leaves perfect sticky lace rings after each sip. A beautiful beer. A dry cracker-like aroma, with some pale fruit and lightly floral finish.

Easy drinking and smooth. Carbonation level is moderate, but this beer drinks a little slick at times. Nice mellow spicy profile from the rye, moderate bittering hops, grassy notes, and a smidge of fruity flavors on the back end.

A nice beer here for sure. Admittedly Rye's are not my favorite of styles, but this one was refreshing and tasty.

from a single into an imperial pint

a: clear light orange and a huge 3 finger head
s: super smooth and light pungency, earthy toasty rye, a little gentle citrus hoppiness
t: follows nose but much more pronounced with a lot of good balance that ends with a definite though gentle resin and flowery bitterness.
m: pretty light and mild, moderate carbonation, pleasant spicy and aromatic bitterness.

great spring beer...very different than Deschute's Red Chair and much lighter, but I somehow think of these as working together to perfectly mark the transition from winter to spring.

Picked up a sixer at the end of May from Total Wine for $8.99. Bottled on 1/14/13, batch 11695. I missed the first distribution release in February, probably got lost in the hunt for Hop Slam.

Beer poured a cloudy orange with a decent white head that dissipated quickly.

Nose has hints of citrus, so i can surmise there has been some fade.

Taste is wonderfully addicting. Spicy rye/malt base is taken over by a wonderful citrus hop that is leaving a pine resin behind.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, mildly carbonated, refreshing.

Overall this is a brew that i thoroughly enjoy each time i have it. This is bottle #4 and just as pleasing as the first rounds I had after work. I will definitely be sure to grab this next winter when it comes out again! Recommended.

Took a chance of a 12-pack of this while in Pittsburgh and glad I did. Pours a dark yellow or light gold color into a typical pint glass. Can pour a large frothy white head. Looks quite hazy and thick with plenty of carbonation. The smell is quite sweet and fruity. Initial taste is also sweet up front with a slightly bitter finish, definitely a different flavor but pleasant. This feels like a heavier brew despite its lighter appearance. Will definitely try more brews from Bell's, if it ever comes to WV.

A= Pours a nice hazy orangy yellow color with a nice looking two fingers of head on it that holds great retention and lacing on the side of the glass.

S= The smell is excellent with a nice hop bite and a little rye spice buried in it. The rye in this one is nice and subtle. Sometimes too much rye can give it an oily aroma but this is great.

T= The taste is a awesome hop punch with great citrus hops smoothed over by some nice spicy dirty rye. It works perfectly with the hop profile. Again not over done with the spicy rye.

M= A nice smooth mouth.

O= This is a great beer. Offers a smooth transition from winter to spring. I don't know if this is seasonal or what but I like this baby. A nice smooth sipper with great flavors.

Poured on tap in 16 oz glass at local yacht club. Well balanced with a nice, mild hop character and light malt back bone. Goes well with a range of food but interesting enough to drink on its own. Would not seek out but happy to drink again.

12oz bottle, bottled on 11/14/2013, batch 11695
The ale pours a nice bright golden color with some yeast particulates suspended, plenty of carbonation, and is topped with a frothy, white head that leaves some chunky lacing is on the glass. Aromas are grassy, earthy, spicy rye, fresh citric hops. Tastes are crisp, grassy, earthy, nice dry spiciness from the rye, lemony citrus, while finishing bitter. Thin-to-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Nice balance of flavors. Overall, I really like the rye in this one. Very crisp & clean. Nice variation on an APA with some rye. I'm surprised this wasn't released in the summer as I found it to be nice and refreshing.
