Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first and foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt and balance.

The fireworks start with the aromatic punch of dry-hop sessions with hop varieties from the Pacific Northwest. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.

Thanks to timmi for hooking me up with several of these. Pours beautiful hazy dark gold with just under an inch of white head. Smells very refreshing - grapefruit hops. Taste is a grapefruit bomb - am I drinking grapefruit juice with breakfast or an IPA in before bed here? Flavor is backed by ample malt reinforcement. Body is fairly thick, almost too much so for my taste, but not quite. High carbonation. If I were an IPA fan, I could drink plenty of these. Great job on this beer - one of the best I've had, up there with Hop Slam and PtY.

Appearance is a very pretty; pure orange/brown amber. Head is smooth and never entirely fades; superb lacing.

Nose has tons of floral hops, with some malt and oak.

Taste has oaky hops, sweet-caramel malt, juicy fruit, and tart tangerine. None of the tinniness you may find in some double IPA's.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth, with medium carbonation. The hops do not add a "bite" as you would normally find, but instead create a consistent, vibratory acidity. All the flavors you expect, but no pucker.

Overall, this beer is a gem. Tons of flavor and a pleasure to drink. Likely the best Bell's I have tried.

On tap at lake bryant bowl. Very glad to be able to find this on draft.

The beer pours the expected orange amber color with very good head retention and considerable lacing. On the nose....Yowszaa!!!! This beer smells great, with considerable orange citrus and a boatloald of pine. I get some light dank earth and some white pepper as well, but the pine and citrus really dominate in this. The flavor profile is every bit as impressive, and I found myself marveling at the talent of the brewer to make a beer like this. There is a sturdy malt component to this DIPA, which adds to the attractive sweet cirtus flavor. However, the beer is clearly dominated by the hop profile, leadiing to a dry, pine infused, intensely bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, with a long, pine infused, very bitter finish. Alcohol is noticeable, but still very well integrated into the flavor profile. This beer is not at all heavy or tiring, though I'm not sure I could handle more than one or two glasses of this impressive beer at a sitting (I ended up ordering two).

Excellent DIPA.... just what this hophead was in the mood for. Very well done.
