Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Bell's Quinannan Falls Lager

Literally born in a dream: Larry Bell, president and founder of Bell’s Brewery, dreamt that he was at the mystically hidden retreat of Quinannan Falls, somewhere in the boreal north.

Neither Quinannan Falls nor the beer actually existed outside his imagination, but he remembered enough about it to sketch a recipe and label, which was put into full form by Michigan artist Kathleen Kalinowski, the following morning.

The end result is a dry-hopped lager that possesses a crisp, dry bitterness you would expect from a German pilsner, but the use of highly aromatic Simcoe hops from the Pacific Northwest, evoke the fragrant pine forests that inspired this beer.

Clear gold with a minor sparkle and a very large, white foam dome leaving fuzzy lace.

Smell is Corn Flakes with grassy, spicy piney orange- and lemon-esque hops.

Leaning bitter and spicy, yet still clean and smoothly crisp, flavors are lemon, grapefruit, corn, light white wheat and pearl onion.

L: A very clear pale-gold with ample amounts of white head. Quite beautiful looking!

S: Malts, pine hops

T: Very balanced between a nice maltiness and a light pine hoppiness.

F: Medium-light body. Carbonation lower than average. Goes down fairly smooth, but with much more hop bitterness than the typical lager.

Pours a clear pale straw producing 2 fingers of frothy, shorlived, white head that recedes to a thin collar & surface cap leaving a wash of of streaky, splotchy lace. Aroma is thin citrus, pineapple, herbal, grass, pine, bread & grainy malt in a background of lager yeast. Taste is light but full of flavor for such thin body: cracker/biscuit, cereal, resinous pine, tropical fruit, lemon, grass, earthy lager yeast & a little honey. The sip dries & gravitates toward bitter as it finishes becoming astringent in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate carbonation, silky & slightly creamy with a tongue coating bitterness that becomes an astringency on the back of the tongue & palate. Light, damn good & oh, so very drinkable.

Poured into a small chalice: even with a thicker-than-should-use glass the color is straw and clear, strong effervescence, head is bright white with fine to medium bubbles, presents about 1/2 inch thick and lingers with mixed thickness and lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is lightly toasted, hint of sweetness, then grassy hops, some light earthiness.

Taste is very good: moderate hopiness, mild toasted malt with some light cracker and biscuit like flavors. Hops are grassy, earthy, not overdone or out of place.

Mouthfeel is crisp like a lager and just bitter enough as a pale style. Hints of helles bock like presence and flavor which I seem to look for from 'american pale lagers'.

Overall a good beer, one of the better in the style with a good malt presence and lighter but still bitter hop flavor/presence.

I appreciate that this comes in a six pack of cans.

When I crack the can a pour into a pint glass, I'm thinking two things: one, this looks like Bud Light, and two, what fantastic aroma!

The taste almost contradicts itself. I get the light crispness of a lager, but the bitter bite of a pale ale. It's enjoyable and refreshing.

Great beer.

Cheers!

On tap at Maxi's Lineup. Clear golden. Smells a little bready with some resiny hops. Tastes resiny right off the bat. Bready and doughy malt flavor. Strong Pilsner malt profile. Pine hop bitterness. Medium body. Delicately hopped to show off a great malt profile, but just enough to be an IPL.

Poured a clear, light yellow body with good head and lace patches down the glass. Light, easy to drink, crisp, clean, has that lager dryness with bit of sweetness one might expect from a pils yet has this clean, earthy hoppiness on the backend and is just a real easy-to-drink and enjoyable beer.
