12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. 9% ABV

The Dtrain's next stop is in Comstock Michigan to try Bell's limited edition Batch 10,000 Ale. This American barleywine is heavy. Thick pour of dark purple. The aroma is all malts, almost too much. Big hops and malts in the well balanced with coco, fruits, coffee.

Thre is a lot going on here. The malts do get a bit overwhelming but this barleywine is enjoyable.

Look is dark brown, not black.

Smell is interesting. I like that school lunchroom trash-bin remark a previous reviewer made. It gets better.

Taste is great & complex. After tasting & enjoying the other beers that I would deem similar (Founders Nemesis '10, Sierra Nevada 30th Jack & Ken's Black Barleywine, ST Iniquity, Widmer W'10. et al...), I would have to say this is one hell of a fine beverage. Nice & smooth. But then again, I'm a raging alcoholic. Take that for what it's worth. Now & forever. Amen.

Feel is awesome. Someone said it stays there. Yep. Because I want it to. stay. there.

Dinkability is off the chart. Taking it all into account as the nurse (she's a new one, cute - nice purse) administers my IV, I am glad I purchased more than one 6'er.

Pours a deep brown with amber highlights. A half an inch or so of loose, khaki tan head. The head falls to a ring that leaves a few spots of lacing.

I smell caramel and toffee...upon agitation I smell some woody / piny hop notes. It kind of reminds me of chicory coffee. Not bad, not great, not what Id expect for a one time limited release.

I taste bitter woody root flavors. Chicory, pine, bark, and horehound come to mind...It is a bit earthy with caramel and toffee undertones.

Full bodied with minimal carbonation...this beer just sits in my mouth.

This beer is not bad, its just not that good. Its not hard to drink, its just not fun to drink! Im not sure what they were going for with this one. It has elements of stouts, barleywines, old ales, porters, and IPA's. It reminds me of something one of my co-workers brewed once. Too much is too much.

5 to the cellar!

(edit 2-20-11: this beer is getting much better with just a little time on it. The aroma and taste have improved with just a couple months in the cellar. I think Ill stock up on these in the name of science.)

Appearance- maroon dark with a bit of head that hangs out for a whiiile

Aroma- all malt. So much for those 60 hops ;) chocolate roastyness and some dark fruit flavors

Taste- remarkbly well balanced for having so much going on. Tastes of dark fruit, mild hops, a bit of sweet chocolate and roasted flavor

Drinkability- Very drinkable for such a big beer... Definitely something that will Change a lot from year to year

Mouthfeel- smooth, very nice

Live review of a 12 oz bottle (batch 10,000... oh, wait...)
A: Purplish black with brown hues, poured with a one-finger tan head that settled to a thick film and collar that leaves a lacing.
S: Definite roast like smoked bacon, a nice blackberry caramel sweetness. Hints of other fermentables: molasses, mead, wheat, and creamy oats kind of complicate things... but aren't detrimental. There is apple here (not sour). I can't describe it but it has some characteristics of a Belgian stout... maybe it's the slight cigar or the yeast fingerprint?
T: Nice creamy thick roasted malts and dark fruits (raisins, blackberries, raspberries) turn to a creamy wheat froth that is washed away with a crisp alcohol like wine, mead, and gin but lingers like rum with an oaky vanilla. A lingering roasted meat with a slight acidity that comes off almost like very sweet apples (fuji).
M: Thick with a creamy frothiness that is wisked away with a cleansing alcohol.
D: OK. One 12 oz is enough.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into my DFH Snifter.

A - Poured out of the bottle it resembles maple syrup in consistancy, maybe a tad thinner but its definitely got some viscosity. Pours really dark brown to almost black and you can't see anything through the glass. Pours a nice 1 1/2 finger head that is tan in color and slowly turns into a perfect cap and ring around the glass also leaving some sticky white lacing.

S - Chocolate and coffee come to my nose right off the bat. Perhaps also some vanilla and caramel tones as well. Smells very smooth and sweet. Toffee definitely is in here. Smells almost of a stout. Familiar smelling to say the least.

T - Wow this is smoooth but got some pretty good alcohol kick to it. Some ageing will mellow that out I hope. I taste carmel and chocolate right away. Theres also lots of those toffee notes that came from the nose as well. Vanilla and sweetness finish this off with that slight alcohol burn. Very enjoyable.

M - Very creamy and syrupy. It has some good carbonation to hold up to the big flavors and really is a great beer.

D - A very drinkable beer. I didn't get to try any of the other Batch beers from Bell's as I jumped on the bandwagon to late but this beer is awesome and if the rest of the Batch series tasted like this one, then I really missed out. I will be ageing a few of these from my six pack just to see what some time does to the beer but this is still a very drinkable beer now.

Pours a medium to dark brown with some amber hues. Initial scent was piney with some underlying burnt grain scents. Taste wasn't what I expected (though with all these ingredients I wasn't sure what I was expecting.) Tastes hits you right in the middle, sides and back of your tongue with a slightly burnt carmel smokey flavor. However, that is almost immediately replaced with the mish-mosh of hops taste. Not sure whats going on. A nutty grapefruit taste lingers after all is said and done. A Brown IPA? I don't know.

Not a horrible beer, but I am a bit disappointed. This being the end of the Batch series for Bells I really thought a little more effort would have went into creating this beer. Instead we get the novelty of grabbing all the ingredients within reach and throwing them into the pot. Not a good end to a decent run. Maybe some time in the cellar will breathe a little life into this one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This one I've been excitedly waiting for. I'd hope to be blown away. Instead I was (still pleasantly) impressed. Although stated to have 100 malts and over 60 hops, the taste is not nearly as wild as its predecessor, the 12.5% abv american strong ale Batch 9000.

Smells of fruits and alcohol. It's not like wine, but it's certainly leaning in that direction. Nothing too sweet or hot about it though.

Tastes like.. well quite unified for supposedly having so many ingredients. This one is an extremely solid barleywine, some sweetness at its core, but never cloying (or "gross" as I call that aspect) and always balanced by a smoky bitterness.

It's filling and full, an invigorating and interesting splash across the palette. This one is dark and even a bit heavy without coating the tongue in a thick glaze or feeling much of any stickiness on the lips.

It goes down.. pretty awesomely. I put away three of these and enjoyed every last drop - something which cannot be said for the elegantly heavy handed Batch 9000 which knocked me on my ass halfway through the second bottle. The bitter feeling may be too intense upfront for some, but it settles in and completes the balancing act this brew attempts. A solid and well rounded ending to the thousand series.

Color: pours golden brown. sits a clear, deep ruby-amber with a thin, light mocha head

Smell: actually pretty mellow for having so many ingredients. very light malt foundation with a fresh, but light, american hop character. just the tiniest hint of smoke too

Taste: alcohol and light roast/smoke pretty much stand out the most here. not all that bitter (at least not the "assertive" character they claimed. hop flavor is low consisting of a citrusy and leafy character. finish is slightly dry with a low bitterness and light alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a low-medium carbonation

Notes: pretty much what i expected - when you combine that many ingredient you just get a "muddy" hodgepodge. if i took 100 flavors of my favorite ice creams and mixed them all together im not going to get a mega super fantastic and complex dish of ice cream. maybe this will improve a bit with age like the 9000

The beer pours out a dried blood colour with a spitty, bubbly, cola tan head with little retention.

The nose is hop heavy after the cap is cracked and early out of the bottle, but muddles into a grainy malt and vegetable scent as the ingredient hodgepdoge whirls together.

The taste is malt heavy and sweet, on par with barleywine characteristics, but with a very pronounced dry finish that is not the usual for the style. Some toasty and earthy elements are present along with the pleasing sweetness, but the dryness is profound.

Mouthfeel is medium to full with the illusion of ligher body coming by way of the dryness of the finish.

Drinkability is average. It is difficult to think of this as a barleywine with the sheer stiffness of the 60 hops character running amuck. A strong ale tag would likely better represent the nuances of this beer, but it would also make this release redundant in the batch cavalcade as yet another strong ale. This is highly hopped for a barleywine, and this makes it slightly more laborious to drink as well. Perhaps the batch series is best left to rest after this release as it seems the big beer idea pool is drying up.

To Mr. Bell: Not that you care or will see this, but now that this series is officially over it would be great to see the batch series rereleased starting back at 1000 so those of us who missed some of the earlier creations could experience the delight of trying them for the first time or be delighted again to see some of our favorites of the batch series cycle through again.

A- Extremely dark brown nearing an almost black color. Less than a fingers worth of head is seen here. Good sticky lacing is evident as well.

S- The first scent picked up is major HOPS. BIG time hops. Sweet, piney, and citrus notes are noticed followed by a sweet malty scent that has some dark fruit tones involved.

T- Not as messy as I had anticipated. Very hoppy up front with the sweet and piney notes. After the hops comes some sweet malt that isn't too bitter is actually quite refreshing. There are some lingering dark fruits but this one seems like it belongs in another category instead of American Barleywine.

M- It's hard to balance over 100 fermentables mixed with 60 hop varieties but Bell's has pulled it off with this one. A nice rich mouthfeel with an enjoyable amount of bitterness on the end.

D- For such a potent brew, this one goes down nice and smooth, without much of the booze burn. I am going to cellar age another one to see what all of this bottled madness develops into over the next year or so.

Ladies and gentlemen, the jambalaya of the beer world, the bouillabaisse of Bell's. 100 malts? 60 hops? Gimmicky.

The appearance turned a dirty dark brown, reddish tints poking around the edge of the glass where light shines by, and a fluffy tan head that is sticky and eternal.

The aroma obviously jitters from one malt to another, but the dominance from the darker roasted malts should be expected. Hot toasted, burnt grains and a bit of rye spill over, but you can sense the base malts in the caramel and pilsen underneath. Big skunky hops in the aroma. All together a bit of a jumbled, foggy mess and actually a bit musty.

The taste opens up welcoming, with a nutty, smoky, sweet malt, but quickly gets overwhelmed by the uneven hammer of acidic hops. Surprisingly shallow flavor considering all the elements. Unlike the aroma, the flavor is two-note, hops and dark roasted barley. Certainly lives for bitterness, because the finish is pretty damn harsh. You got 100 malts in here and you can only sense the bitter from the hops and a mere touch of burnt malt??

The mouthfeel is thick, sticky and mellow in the carbonation.

This needs to be cellared, obviously. I read on the website that they welcome us to drink this now, but frankly it must have been strictly a business decision to send this out to sell bottles. This needs to mellow out for a while, I would guess six months, and we'll see how the flavor balances at that point.

A- This is a dark beer with slightly odd tints of reds, purples and browns. The color visible around the edges takes me back to being a kid and mixing every crayon in the box. The result is a muddled, busy brown. The head is nice, if only for a moment. It left me one ring of lace before it faded to a skin.

S- The smell is weak but it has a lot going on. Dare I say too much going on? Who would have guessed that a beer with 100 fermentables and 60 hops would get a bit clucterfucked? Some of the few scents that I can describe include peppermint, salted chips, licorice rope, burnt rubber, pencil erasers, and barber shop (which is a melange in it of itself). It smells like a trashcan in an elementary school lunch room.

T- The major tastes include months of anticipation, dozens of reposted threads, hearsay with a touch of speculation, and most notably, disappointment.

This beer doesnt know what to be. It starts out malty with a bittersweet cocoa dryness a long with some roast. The maltiness is never big, luxurious or robust. But just as you think the maltiness up front is getting all over the place the hoppiness comes in. And like a kick to the temple, anything nice that the malts bring are plunged into amnesia. There is a little bit of every kind of flavor here. Spiciness is big, pine, citrus, aspirin, tylenol, as well as ibuprophen. Its like my spice rack and medicine cabinet were both emptied to yield ingredients for this beer, oh, and the whole concoction was stirred using a burnt piece of timber, still soaked in gasoline.

M- There is nothing gross about how this beer feels, persay. Indeed the cocoa powdery dryness is quite nice. However, the body isnt anywhere near what one would expect from a beer with so many ingredients.

I figured this beer would be so thick that they would have to package it in squeeze bottles but its not that way at all. Carbonation is dialed back nicely but the most annoying flavors of all are the ones that linger, and linger. The finish is looong and stuck with aspirin, charcoal and gasoline.

D- This beer will make a good extra but only because of its label.

I can only hope that this beer marks the end of the "everything but the kitchen sink" mentality, and most importantly, the end of a lackluster year from Bell's.

Consumed 11/30 poured in to a pint glass

A: This beer pours a nice, deep brown, with chestnut/mahogany hues on the edges when held to the light. One finger of sudsy, rocky head sits on top. Head recedes at a moderate pace and leaves wispy lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is muted floral hops, mild caramel, some raisin, and a hint of coffee.

T: Taste starts with nice, light caramel malts, a touch of breadiness and a bit of molasses. MIddle is filled with a bit more breadiness that is sweetened by raisin flavoring and chocolate. Finish has an odd, though pleasant floral hop bite that then gathers a slightly smokey finish.

M: Ligher side of medium body, medium carbonation, nice rich body to this.

D: Goes diwn very easy, not too filling, nice kick, not what I would call a barleywine, but this is a damn fine beer. I wish that I had more of it!

All good things in all good time. Yet, I can't say Barleywine is what it is. American Strong Ale is a better catch-all category for a beer that is sort of a one of a kind.

Appearance was a dark mahogany,dense but lets through a bit of light,ruby highlights. Head was a 2 finger froth,that real thick fluff you could ski on. Big lace. A looker.

Aroma was bready grain and malt,a hint of sherry soaked raisin,a bit of citrus and flowers. A nose that was not real extrovert but quite deep. I had to think that this beer was gonna be COMPLEX.

Taste. Complex indeed. Ideally, I'd have done 2 bottles to get a proper and full sense of all the subplots and details involved. None of that tannin thing a Brandywine exhibits until rather warm. This began with a fair chill and the profile only did a moderate shift as it warmed.
A flavor that,not surprisingly,is full and rich. Having used about everything one might put in a batch of beer,it had an amped up flavor of...BEER. The sum total of beer,focused into one bottle was the concept and the result.
The malt side,naturally,leads and includes caramel and toffee with hints toward coffee,chocolate,dark fruit,but the net complexity won't let singular tastes step forward for a solo. You can chew on this and detect...pretty near any flavor trace you'd ever had in a beer,short of the gimmicks like fruit or chili.

The Hop side has some of the Two Hearted fruit/citrus notes as well as the more dry earthy-woody Euro hop finish of a Best Brown. Interesting to taste how nicely they play together.

Don't think for a sec this is just a goofy gimmick or a sloppy mess. No doubt a dozen or so of the 150+ malts -hops-grains-etc,do most of the work,so they could have some idea what would result. What did result is a very grand and unique beer.

Mouthfeel is just a delight. there's a good solid viscosity,not Stout thick but somehow spot on for...whatever this sum of all beers is.

The finish is quite a delight as it pretty much is an array of all the things hops might do and at times one 'note" is clear and at times you get the whole chorus.

Don't STASH AND AGE most of what you get. The hops lost will matter more than whatever transitions age does to the malt side. As is,this does not have just a few singular flavors or a rough boozy quality. Age can do...what? Seems age may blur the malt side into a consensus...and that's no plus for this one. Already it's silky and in good harmony.

Drinkable? Yes. I am sensing this is no Session-Lite,more a Light Heavyweight. I could have a few if not in a big rush but this is,as beer goes,like a Where's Waldo?" puzzle where you sip and savor and search and you find a whole lot of details.

Nothing makes me want to stop,except the hard fact that I didn't buy 2 bottles.

This one pours a dark raisin in color with a two finger light khaki head that just sits atop the beer. It smells sweet but I can't quite put my finger on how. It's now sugary, it's not fruity, it just has this different sweetness to it. Aside from that you can detect light alcohol as well. My first thought it dry hops. It then goes into a sweet maltiness followed by a good amount of alcohol. I definitely don't think it tastes like a traditional barleywine. It drinks nice and smooth but the alcohol taste does linger. It's pretty drinkable everything considered, but not overly so. I like the flavor more than the 9,000 but I do think that that was a better beer.

Appearance: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a large wine glass. Pours a very dark brown, with a tan one and a half finger head. Very little light gets through the glass, but when held up to the light, a beautiful mahogany/ruby color is visible. Head retention is excellent and the lacing is good.

Smell: Some nice toasted and caramel malt aroma, and quite a bit more hops than I was anticipating. Some coffee and brown sugar notes, offset with some pine resin and citrus. An interesting and pleasant aroma, but a little thin on some of the darker elements I expected. Alcohol is detectable, but not to a great degree.

Taste: Much more bitter coffee and roasted malt than there was in the nose. Tastes closer to a stout or porter than a Barleywine. I'm not sure how accurate the Barleywine descriptor is though, as there is no indication on the bottle or website of the style they were going for. In fact, it seems more like a schizophrenic style, as they used 100 different grains and 60 hop varieties in crafting this brew. Pretty tasty nonetheless!

Mouthfeel: Medium to full-bodied and bitter. Pretty big roasted malt punch and some pretty assertive hop presence. Nice warming from the alcohol, but it's not as discernible as it could be with a 9.2% ABV.

Drinkability: Pretty good drinkability for such a high gravity beer. Not quite as sweet as I thought it would be and you're not left with any lingering strong aftertaste. A unique creation I would go back to.

Pours a nice dark brown. Some red hues in there held up to the light but a very dark color. About 1 fingers worth of khaki colored head.


A very complex aroma. you can tell there are a ton of ingredients in here. Roasted notes, earthy notes, nothing really dominates. There is a lot of malt smell but also hops.


complex as well. malty and hoppy. roasted malt tastes, piney and earthy hops....alcohol is prevalent as well.


medium bodied. good carbonation. The hop bitterness leaves the mouth a little dry feelilng but nothing too bad.


takes a little dip here. One because it's hard to find currently and two it's very expensive. The high alcohol isn't too bad, but I will not be buying another 6pack of this. I will age 2 bottles for awhile to see how it taste. A decent beer, but I've had better.

12 oz. bottle. Batch #10000 (haha).

Very dark crimson brown body. An inch of thick, whipped, creamy, light khaki head. Great lacing. Smells like the combined aromas of 100 fermentables and approximately 60 hops. Okay, not really. Funky hop nose over substantial sugary maltiness. Hop notes of resin, mandarin orange, and spruce bough. Sugary caramel and cookie malts blend with candied pear and pineapple.

Herbal, resinous hop bitterness up front. Caramel and fruit malts fight through the hops, providing a nice balance. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate weave between sweetish tropical fruit notes. Becomes more toasted and chocolaty near the finish. I'm also picking up some tobacco and smoke. As this beer warms up, there are more and more layers exposed. Slightly boozy, but pleasantly so. Grassy, herbal hop mixture in the bittersweet finish. Medium-full body, with a creamy feel. I guess this beer just goes to show you that even with 150+ ingredients you can make a good beer. Happy 10000 Bells! Sad to see this series go though...

Bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. This is a deep dark brown color with a light foamy head. Smells include sweet molasses and some floral hops. Taste is sweet upfront quickly shifting to an intense bitterness. Alcohol is noticeable, but actually blends in with the flavors really well. Flavors mix to have an interesting wood-like characteristic, like a fine scotch or cigar.

This isn't nearly as sweet as barleywines usually are, with a more pronounced hops flavor that keeps it very balanced. This is interesting and worth trying.

Poured into Tulip. One finger tan head that dissipates quickly. Leaves a small amount of lacing. Dark brown color that lets very little light through. Looks like a dark brown ale, not quite as dark as a dark stout.

I'm getting only very slight aromas of hops, roasted malt, and caramel. Not overpowering, but pleasant.

Initial taste is, however, similar to a stout. Flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt, and a stout-like coffee/chocolate flavor. There are a ton of flavors in the brew. Others like, licorice, seem to come through as it warms. A little similar to Belgian Quads only in the nature of being very complex in flavor.

Fairly high carbonation and very drinkable for the abv. Alcohol is masked very well.

Solid in every way. Looking forward to aging a couple and seeing how this develops.

S- Sweet herbal, piney, predominately hoppy aroma
T- hops continue throughout, punctuated with roasted barley and caramel. Hops in good balance with the malty body.
M- moderate carbonation balances well with the moderately heavy body, contributes to a very smooth, full mouthfeel
D- Very drinkable beer- pleasant herbal hoppy aroma continues through the entire sip, but not over powering. Kept in a great balance between the roasted barley and caramel, combined with a smooth, full mouthfeel. Not sure the "100 different malts and 60 different hops" yields any one particularly predominant flavor, but is definitely a well-balanced beer worthy of drinking again. Very happy with how Bells ended their batch series.

A - Very deep cherry mahogany with deep ruby hues. A slightly above average sized, creamy, frothy, beige colored head. Good retention finally settling into a nice creamy, smooth lace.

S - Really interesting aroma. Both malt and hops are strong. Roasted malt that is reminiscent of a stout with tobacco and coffee. Some earthiness as well. Hops also quite strong with floral, earthy, and pine hops being strongest. Really intriguing aroma.

T - Like the aroma, the flavor is very complex. Hops and malt both very strong with them trading off with what wins out. Brown, earthy, tobacco, and hints of coffee. Hops I think slightly over power the malts, especially mid sip. Earthy, piney, floral, and herbal hops quite strong as well. Pretty bitter with hops coming out well.

M - Medium body with a bit above average carbonation. Quite smooth.

D - Very strong beer but also very smooth at the same time. Alcohol is very well hidden. Wanted to keep drinking just to find more flavors.

Notes: Very interesting beer with the combination of malt and hops. I enjoyed this beers, especially given the massive diversity of malt and hops. Really excited to see how this ages. Great beer to drink with amazing diversity of flavors. Definitely could be better for a final batch, but a good showing.

Served in a Affligem Noel goblet.
A - poured deep dark brown, 1/2 a finger head. Head cleared after a few minutes leaving a nice chocolate colored film with thick edges.

S - Significant malt presence, hint of chocolate, a little smoke and at the top citrus hops.

T - A bit confusing for me. Maybe allergies inhibiting my senses. First sip revealed a faint smokiness that I cannot find in subsequent tastes. Second bottle providing the same experience. Net net significant malts and hops married together happily while the malts are a little more assertive. Well balanced. Alcohol is very well hidden but comes through towards the end.

M - Incredibly light given the anticipation of all the ingriedients that went into this beer. For such a big beer it is very light on the tongue. 180 from 9,000. Good carbonation.

D - Very drinkable at 9.2%.

Sad to see the Batch series going away...what will replace it?

120z Bottle into tulip

A - Color is very dark brown, red highlights around the edge of the glass. Almost opaque, but some light does get through. Poured with a two finger tan head that has excellent retention. As it recedes a there is some lacing, but not too much.

S - Very malty, with a hop strong backbone. There's so much going on with this that it almost blends together too well in a good bouquet of floral, earth, piny, brown sugary delight.

T - The taste is very similar to the smell, except it seemed as though the hops are very muted against the malt compared to what the nose would lead you to believe. Lots of brown malt, very solid strong ale that is a lot like a barleywine with the malt characteristic. The hops show through, but don't shine as much as I was hoping from the scent. Very well balanced though, nothing is overwhelming. And for the malt bill on this, I'm impressed. But, I still wanted a bit more hops bite to this.

M - Solid carbonation with a body that is medium to full. It lingers a bit, but it's a pleasant linger.

D - For a 9.2%, this is extremely drinkable. After two or three in a sitting, you'll be doing just fine.
