Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Amber Ale deftly balances a mixture of toasted grain & light caramel notes with a range of floral, citrus and herbal hop notes, capped by a clean bitterness. This balance of flavors makes Amber Ale quite versatile as a food pairing option, not to mention being rather tasty in its own right. Whether serving as a jumping point to other styles or as a familiar standby, Amber Ale is central to the Bell’s portfolio.

Look: It pours amber with a white head. Head retention is moderately low.

Smell: It has aromas of malty sweetness with caramel. It also has a bread crust quality to it. There is light apple in the background.

Taste: The flavors are sweet with bread crusts and caramel. There is also some light apple and light herbal.

Feel: It has a moderate body and light bitterness.

Overall, this is very easy drinking and a balance towards the malts.

This is WAY underrated as a "very good". In aligning with another rating I had seen..it does remind me of what is called a bitter... when you order it at a pub in the UK. They "pull" it up by pumping the handle at the bar and it comes up through pipes/tubes connected to the keg/barrels from the cellar. I went there way before great American craft breweries began the revolution here, so the brew in the UK was even more special back then.

Wow! I'm a huge fan of English bitters such as John Smith's and Burton Ale. This Amber Ale takes me right back to pubs in Leeds or Newcastle! Just superior and rare to find in a US brewer.

Pours an amber with a white head. Smells of caramel, light hops, and malt. Tastes of sweet caramel, sweet malt, and slightly bitter hops. Medium in body and carbonation. Overall a very good amber.

A good beer is a good beer, snobs may rate low. But, A good beer is a good beer, and this is that.

12oz bottled 6/9/17 poured into a pint glass at fridge temp 5.8% ABV. The beer pours a bit hazy with some small floated. It's amber (duh) in color with light khaki colored head that recedes to a thin cap with some lacing. The aroma is caramel centered and not overpowering. The flavor is more caramel with an earthy, slightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is thin bodied, well carbonated and a little chalky. The finish is mostly dry. Overall, ok. This beer lists a 6 month shelf life and doesn't state it's unpasteurized as some of their IPA's do. It's drinkable, but not the quality I expect from Bell's.

Wow i'm surprised this beer is rated so low. I loved it, one of the best amber ales I've ever had...maybe even the best. I'll be buying it again next time I see it.
