Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Amber Ale deftly balances a mixture of toasted grain & light caramel notes with a range of floral, citrus and herbal hop notes, capped by a clean bitterness. This balance of flavors makes Amber Ale quite versatile as a food pairing option, not to mention being rather tasty in its own right. Whether serving as a jumping point to other styles or as a familiar standby, Amber Ale is central to the Bell’s portfolio.

Rich amber in color, mostly opaque. One finger of white head with moderate retention. Aroma is quite nice - malt, sourdough, bread, slight caramel, and earthy/piney hops. Nicely balanced on taste, the sweet malts and hop presence complement each other very well. Pine, spice, earthiness pop more from the hops on taste. Medium body, moderate carbonation, and very smooth. Slightly dry finish. A well done, well balance Amber Ale.

A - Pours a hazy amber with a one finger creamy white head. Nice amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is bready malts, caramel and light piney hops.

T - The taste is caramel malts, brown bread, piney hops and some black tea notes throughout.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Soft creamy mouthfeel.

O - A nice refreshing amber. The flavors are clean and bright.

Poured into a pint glass. A fairly hazy amber-orange color with a frothy off-white head. The foam had nice staying power and nice lacing. The nose was more prominent than expected (old beer) with oranges, some floral notes, and brown bread. The malts were front and center on the palate, with some caramel, toast, bread, and faint citrus and floral notes. Clean, slightly bitter finish.

Presentation: 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Look: Hazy orange with an off-white 2.5 finger head. Excellent head retention lasts the whole beer through.

Smell: Fruity ester over a complex bed of malts and hops.

Taste: Good but not as much going on here as the nose would suggest. Malts up front followed by moderate hop bitterness. Reminds me of the way Yuengling used to taste.

Feel: Thin without being watery, moderately high carbonation. Goes down very easily.

Overall: A very good ale. The only fault I can find is the slight disconnect between the nose and the taste.

A - Copper red color, semi-transparent with a hint of haze, white head, thin, persistent wisps, and no lacing.

S - Lemon flavored tea notes, a bit of minerality, a hint of pine and mint.

T - Follows the nose in the open, with a tea-like herbaceous quality, lemon and zest, a malty caramel core, and a mildly bitter back end.

M - Crisp, with a light feel and a dry close.

O - Quite drinkable, pleasant flavors, but not terribly exciting.
