Pours a pitch black color with a half finger coffee brown head which gives way to a small ring with little lace. The aroma is of roast and bitter chocolate. There is a small hint of pumpkin as well. The taste follows suit...the front end has a touch of pumpkin before big roasted malts and bitter chocolate come through. The end has a little heat. The mouth feel is silky and thick with some heat. Overall it was well blended but nothing stood out. The bitter chocolate was a little too much.

Had on tap at Avenue Pub New Orleans. Served in a snifter.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains well before slowly becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a large patch of surface foam. Somewhat resilient lacing leaves a thick ring around the edge of the glass.

S- Not much aroma besides some heavy char and booze. You can catch a small whiff of the heat from the habanero. There's also this weird aroma that I can honestly only compare to rotting garbage.

T- Damn, you can taste a lot though. Big astringent notes show up mostly as the heat starts to creep in slowly but surely. No pumpkin to speak of though unfortunately. Some sweetness begins to edge its way in which brings with it some dark chocolate. Decently drinkable given the high ABV and band-aid like astringency. The booze actually starts to wear on me as it increasingly starts tasting like bourbon, and not in a good way.

M- Certainly the best thing about this beer as there's lots of slick creaminess. A bit sharp from the heat with medium-low carbonation and the fullest of bodies.

O- If you want a big, boozy RIS with some heat and no pumpkin, this one's for you. Unfortunately, this just ain't my cup o' tea. Was a struggle to finish the large snifter.

On-tap. Snifter glass. Enjoyed on febĀ“13. Pours pitch-black in color headed by tan foamy crown. It seems lively at fist sight but turns into a lasting thin layer on top. Spots on sides. Heavy roasted malt as well as floral aromas, hints of currants & fruity touch to the nose. Burnt malt upfront provides a dense sensation followed by involving sharp bitterness. Even though malts stand up on line. Flavorful body, medium carbonation. Thankfully, intense body is lightened by fresh vegetable & funny peppery chili in the middle. Spicy touch lingers with slightly burnt coffee into the long finish & remains on the aftertaste. High ABV is well hidden by incredible well balanced flavors. Watch up your step!!! I tell ja.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a jet black color and a thick consistency. There was a small amount of foamy, tan-colored head that quickly dissipated. Fair lacing.

S: A very sharp aroma of malt, peppers, and chocolate.

T: Tasted of hints of coffee, chocolate, malt, a good shot of peppers, and some hops in the finish. The pumpkin element is there, but it seems to be overwhelmed by the peppers and other ingredients. Nonetheless, this flavor is oddly likeable and complex. The high ABV% is not even noticeable.

M: An average amount of carbonation with a fiery finish, courtesy of the peppers. Full-bodied.

O: Definitely not your typical RIS. This might seem like a gimmicky beer, but it's a solid brew and worth checking out, especially if you're looking for something different.

BOTTLE: 33cl format. Brown glass. Branded black pry-off crown cap. Purchased at BierCaB Barcelona (the shop, not the bar). Batch 16683.

10.50% ABV. 340kcal. Oddly, the front of the label calls it a "pumpkin imperial stout with habanero chili" while the side calls it an "imperial india pale ale." Definitely an oversight.

Served chilled into a tulip. I've heard Naparbier is Spain's best brewery, so I'm hoping for the best...

HEAD: ~2.5cm wide. Khaki-tan colour head. Thick and creamy. Robust. Leaves no lacing as it recedes, which takes ~2 minutes. Could be deeper and richer with a better complexion.

BODY: Predictably, it's an opaque solid black. I see no yeast/lees within.

Appears aptly carbonated. Pretty standard imperial stout appearance.

AROMA: Dry pumpkin spice mingles with a vinegary capsaicin heat. I don't pick up on much chili intensity or habanero, though. Allspice and clove are the main spices; I look for nutmeg and ginger but find none. Dark malt sweetness ties it all together.

I find no actual pumpkin gourd, and the actual imperial stout base seems shallow and simple...no chocolate (even chocolate malt), no coffee, no roasted barley.

A subdued aroma suggesting a balanced but reticent stout with a simplistic flavour profile.

TASTE: Flat and empty of flavour on the open. Luckily, by the second act the chili pepper hits, introducing some very mild chili heat into the fold. Those fearing intense habanero heat can relax; this is very subdued chili pepper character. A blip of pumpkin is present, but I doubt I'd notice it in a blind tasting. Structurally, this is just an odd build; all of the flavour is packed in on the back-end. There's nothing up front, save for the generic dark malt backbone.

Speaking of which, that's all that's offered in terms of the imperial stout style. No roasted barley here, nor any intricate notes whatsoever.

Spicewise, I think I find clove and allspice. No ginger or anything zany.

All things considered, it's more a chili beer than an imperial stout (or pumpkin ale) in my estimation. The mild chili heat easily dominates this somewhat weak flavour profile. Still, it's decently balanced for what it is, and I do quite like the one-dimensional chili heat in spite of the beer's shortcomings. More depth and intricacy of flavour are really needed for this to be more successful.

TEXTURE: Warm but not boozy. Smooth, wet, full-bodied, well-carbonated, unrefreshing. This complements the taste decently, but fails to accentuate specific notes from the flavour profile or to elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: One on hand, it's a mess of an attempt to fuse three styles. On the other, if one ignores the ostensible imperial stout style designation and instead treats it as a chili beer, it's pretty nice - and certainly more successful than most. Drinkable, with a shockingly well disguised ABV. I'd like to see them play up the dark malt characteristics more to make this more of a "Mexican chocolate" style chili stout, but it's fine as-is. It won't dazzle the discerning drinker, but those with an open mind who aren't clinging rigidly to style specifications will find it interesting. I might purchase another bottle in future provided the price point is right (I guess ~2.50 euro would be fair). I'm interested to try more beers from Naparbier.
