This brown ale has a marked ruby brown colour with a generous and lasting head. It has a distinctive aroma reflecting the wide range of ingredients used in its production. The fruitiness resulting from its fermentation blends harmoniously with a dominant liquorice and caramel flavour. The body is decidedly malty. The bitterness is the result of a complex alchemy between the fine hops and special malts used. These give St-Feuillien Brune a typical dark chocolate appearance. This beer creates an endless variety of sensations with a lingering taste and powerful aroma.

The beer poured into the chalice deep amber brown with a yellow tan head which rose tall and frothy and fell slowly to lace the glass.

The aroma was fruity with dark fruits most prevalent, raisins and prunes. The aroma also contained a bit of phenolic spice kicked up by alcohol. The Belgian yeast character was also present and nicely fruity and spicy.

The flavor was malty with a caramel and a metallic earthy flavor. The flavor was fruity with raisins and prunes at a moderate level, but not over the top and a nice bit of chocolate thrown in for good measure. The metallic flavors increased more and more as the beer warmed.

The finish was dry with a lasting bit of tinny flavor and some spice with caramel into the aftertaste. The body was medium, but actually seemed a bit lighter due to the carbonation level. Quite tasty and easy to drink while cold but more of a chore after warming and the increasing tinny flavor. The beer also contained a sizable warming after consumption.

750 ml bottle purchased at Total Wine.

Brasserie St. Feuillien 'Brune' @ 8.5% , served from a 330 ml bottle
A-pour is brown from the bottle to a very dark amber in the glass with a medium size tan head leaving a fine spotty lace film along the tulip
S-caramel upfront , hints of licorice in the background
T-big taste , full of flavours , a lot going on with this beer
MF-ok carbonation , feels full bodied
Ov-don't be fooled by the small bottle , big tasting beer

Look: Medium-dark brown, almost cola-like, with yellow head
Smell: Dark roasted coffee, dark malt
Taste: More of the same dark malt & coffee notes, slight burnt note. Long dark malt & boozy finish.
Feel: Rich, boozy mouthfeel
Overall: Similar in flavour profile to a Trappist ale, perhaps slightly darker.

From the stubby bottle, it pours a hazy brown color with a nice light brown head that slowly reduces and leaves some spotty lacing. The nose gets a light roast malty scent. The mouth gets yeasty roasted malt.

I was really looking forward to this one and will try again to see if anything changes. Light dark ale, not much for the bouquet, average malt and strong beer to the pallet. Nice look to it. Will try again for sure, bur very disappointed after a the hype and various reviews I had read. Average strong ale.

330ml bottle purchased from the LCBO.

A: Dark ruby-brown appearance with a one-finger cap of bubbly tan foam.

S: Raisin, red plum, black liquorice. Light yeastiness, with some caramel. Hints of ethanol and cocoa.

T: Largely follows nose, with substantial sweetness mid-palate and balanced bitterness to end.

M: Medium-full body, spicy & highly carbonated, sweet middle, prickly bitterness with long, drying finish.

O: An enjoyable, relatively complex Belgian dubbel. Worth trying IMO.

Bottle. 8.5% ABV. Dark chestnut brown. Thick frothy and tan head.
Rich aroma of fruity malt and indistinct liquorice.
The fruit continues upon tasting. Dried figs and prunes. Demi-sec. Lightly caramelised demerara.
Moderate to full bodied. Gentle carbonation.
Enjoyable and easy drinking high ABV beer.

L- Poured slowly so some sediment left in bottle. Really rich dark chestnut with a reddish hue. Pours with 1-2cm of tan foam, recedes slowly.
S- Prominent, I could smell it from a foot away! It smells toasty and up closer the alcohol smell is clear (unusual for me to smell the alcohol in this way, even in beers this high ABV%).
T- Rich toasty malts are at the fore-front. The 'Beer Info' suggests flavours of caramel and liquorice; the former is clear, the latter is evading me today. The finish is hoppier/brighter than one might expect from an 8.5% brew.
F- It never seems OTT/over-rich though it's clear from the feel that it packs a punch.
O- These styles of beers risk being over-rich versus my palate. But this one with a notably bright finish didn't do that. I'm now rather torn between liking this or their Blonde beer more. I think it might be the Blonde that I had yesterday, which to me revealed a broader taste spectrum.

A Canadian poster below states that the bottle he had is 8.5% and not 7.5% per the headers/listing above; mine is also 8.5%.
Purchased from M+S, London W8, UK. BB 18/06/2020.
The lable pictured above has changed, it's now a mix of rusty red and very pale tan, a simple coat of arms + text. ie no longer a multi-coloured image of a landscape.
