Style: Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This brown ale has a marked ruby brown colour with a generous and lasting head. It has a distinctive aroma reflecting the wide range of ingredients used in its production. The fruitiness resulting from its fermentation blends harmoniously with a dominant liquorice and caramel flavour. The body is decidedly malty. The bitterness is the result of a complex alchemy between the fine hops and special malts used. These give St-Feuillien Brune a typical dark chocolate appearance. This beer creates an endless variety of sensations with a lingering taste and powerful aroma.

Appearance: Poured into a a tulip. Has a dark brown body with a thick tan head. Moderate retention with no lacing.
Smell: A very nice smell of caramel malts and dark fruits.
Taste: Quite toasty for a bruin/brune. Matches the smell very well.
Mouthfeel: A thick body with high carbonation, perhaps a bit too much carbonation for me.
Overall: A toasty brune with high carbonation.

2014. The cork shot out like a rocket when I removed the cork.

Pours a see through garnet with plenty of foam and lacing.

Candi sugar, dark fruit, with some spice in the smell.

Dark fruit, mostly raisins, candi sugar, cinnamon and a pronounced cardboard flavour; could be past its prime.

Medium body with medium carbonation. The way the cork shot out, I thought it might be over carbonated.

Not terrible at this stage in its bottled life but I have little desire to revisit.

My notes place this well above average for the style: smart looks if you like the contrast of a big head and dark body, fragrant, fruity; but not too sugary as Belgians can make this style.

MJ's "Great Beers of Belgium" calls this Brune "an attractive, deep reddish colour; softer smoother, toffees, body; and a tasty, bitter-chocolate palate; a perfect dessert beer or digestif."

From elcervecero. In La Trappe chalice. Watching Sons of Anarchy 7x02-03. Very nice brune, very close to a good quad because of its dark fruits profile. A bit more watery but also more drinkable.

330ml, squat bottle (@ 8.5% ABV), a bit of a surprise late holiday season arrival here in Alberta. Pronouncing this one properly would involve a lot of mouth contortions, methinks.

This beer pours a clear, dark orange-brick amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly bubbly tan head, which leaves a few chunky instances of splattered lace around the glass as it very slowly sinks away.

It smells of gritty and grainy caramel malt, some boozy toffee, musty yeast, mulled red wine, mixed dark fruit, and a wee suggestion of underused and underloved earthy and weedy hops. The taste is bready and lightly doughy caramel malt, a muddled citrus and bruised red apple fruitiness, thin red wine, a still edgy, chip-on-its-shoulder kind of yeastiness, subtle baking spice, and more plain, and barely perceptible earthy and leafy hop bitters.

The carbonation is quite active in its opening theatrics, and in its palate-expanding frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a small spiced alcohol thing picking and prodding at the seams. It finishes off-dry, the caramel/toffee backbone wavering, but keeping it between the ditches, while the fruit, yeast, and spice settle in for the rest of the trip.

Overall, a pleasantly rounded and somewhat complex version of the style, the elevated ABV doing well to generally keep its hands to itself. Easy to drink, and a welcome salve to the doldrums of January and its imminent drop into frigid sub-zero temperatures.

This poured to a foamy, light head. It's effervescence conveys the foamiiness to the palate. Not much of a nose. Taste has a bitter edge with maltiness and is overall disappointing. I expected better.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 750ml bottle in a snifter. This fine dubbel pours a dark lightly cloudy mahogany with a very nice head of light tan foam that settles to a thick ring, thin pool, and light lacing. Nose of chocolate, raisins, Belgian Candy sugars, and fresh baked bread. Flavors follow the nose with brown sugars on the front, rich dark raisins dipped in chocolate on the middle, and a mix of fresh bread and light cola notes on the sides and back with a subtle yeast note. Very drinkable with high carbonation on the mouth feel keeping it lively and a sweet lightly dry finish and warming alcohol.
A solid offering.
Excellent.
Cheers

A delicious caramel-chocolate flavor here. It's almost a dessert beer. Very likeable.
