Notes / Commercial Description:
She's back! What’s better than one shot of espresso? Two shots of espresso! This edition of our favorite coffee infused stout utilizes buckets of Red Barn Coffee Roaster’s Sumatra Mandheling. The Mandheling’s deep cocoa flavors open up to reveal a richly complex treat. We taste flavors of , chocolate covered espresso beans, molasses, milk chocolate, and touches of sweet brown sugar. A pungent & decadent bean for sure! A rich, sweet, and less roasty base beer contributes the ideal backdrop to this bold and vibrant treat for the coffee and beer lover alike! We find this to easily be the most intense and potent Double Shot yet. A true coffee lover’s delight!

Well, it seems I'm on a roll--might as well review one more excellent beer from my trade with BA wuntrikpony, since I drank most of the stash this weekend. Enjoyed out of a 750 mL swingtop "growler" with a tag noting the fill date as 7/4/15. Poured into a British pub style imperial pint glass.

Appearance (4.75) - A moderately aggressive pour yields a slow-building but, ultimately, massive three fingers of dark cocoa colored head. As it sits, the microbubbles begin to expand and give it sort of a chocolate swiss cheese appearance. It hangs around for quite awhile before the foam is low enough to drink it without getting a nostril full of suds. As it fades, it leaves streaks of sticky lace on the side of the glass, and it never completely disappears from the surface of the liquid, resulting in a permafilm of sorts. All of this sits on a body that forces me to wonder how much more black could this beer be, and the answer is none. None more black.

Smell (4.5) - Fragrance of fresh coffee grounds and espresso being brewed are up front, but not to be outdone are the sweeter characteristics of cocoa, baker's chocolate and even molasses. I've never had Sumatra Mandheling coffee, but if this beer is representative of what it brings, I would suggest it makes a perfect dessert coffee based on the aroma.

Taste (4.75) - Wonderfully, the taste of this follows in the footsteps of the smell, with an expected burst of espresso and fresh grounds complemented by notes of cocoa and brown sugar, but faint--not overpoweringly sweet. Interestingly, while it has all those sweeter flavor profiles, it comes across more like a biscotti would, where the sweetness is subdued so as not to overpower the coffee. I must admit, it makes me feel a bit silly to write this review using smell and flavor profiles from the brewer's description, but they are spot on--and I say this, having read their description after drinking the beer.

Mouthfeel (4.5) - Medium-to-full bodied and moderate carbonation with a semisweet finish.

Overall (4.5), a fantastic beer that likely inserts itself into the conversation as my favorite non-BA coffee stout. It was too easy to drink that entire 750 ml bottle--sweetness and bitterness of this beer were in excellent balance and made for a beverage I could consume for long periods without growing tired of it.

Huge dark roast coffee underlying with some milk stout smell. Tastes like coffee with some milk and sugar. Only complaint is the mouthfeel. Wish it was a tad bit thicker. Dry finish. Super solid.

750ml growler shared at the Malt House while waiting for Great Taste tickets.

Pours a dark brown, opaque, nearly black body, two finger dark brown head, average retention, bits of lacing. Smells of rich black coffee, roasted coffee bean, milk chocolate, roasted malt. Very strong coffee aroma that is more on the darker, roastier and less acidic side. Flavour is the aforementioned roasty coffee, not too dark, complemented nicely by milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, no char or smoke, a bit of toffee. Mouthfeel is full bodied, smooth and creamy, good carbonation, easy to drink, zero heat. Overall, a very good coffee beer and every bit about this reminds me of why Good Morning is so good.
