Abstraction - CoffeeAbstraction - Coffee
Notes: Our friends at Gracenote are masters at the art, science, and complexity of coffee roasting, tasting, and extraction. For this beauty, we worked in conjunction with them to select a coffee that would perfectly support and complement Abstraction. Given the characteristics of the base beer, we selected a coffee with solid structure and complexity, and with firm acidity to provide lift and balance (Kenya Kavutiri AB). The result is truly greater than the sum of its parts. It tastes like the most beautifully harmonious cup of coffee we’ve ever had, with virtually no bitterness, and densely packed coffee flavors. It is richly flavorful without weighing down the palate, and it finishes cleanly and boldly. It challenges and rewards the palate as it is allowed to warm in the glass. We are very excited to share this beer with you as it represents everything we try to achieve as craftsman - balance, elegance, authenticity, and rich flavor that is enjoyable pint after pint, time and time again, in any circumstance. Enjoy!

Canned 4/3/19. Deep brown with a finger of beige colored head, solid retention and mediocre lacing. Aroma is faint roasted malts with a little bit of chocolate sweetness. If there was any coffee aroma, it's long gone. Taste is pleasant, if unremarkable. As with the nose, any coffee is long gone. What is present is a solid, if unspectacular base beer. Light roast, reasonably full mouthfeel and smooth. May need to revisit fresh some day.

So after regular ass Abstraction scored through the roof with me, figured this would be an interesting development.

Pours dark brown into a Sierra Nevada XXX party tulip glass, 1/2" lighter brown head, great retention. The aroma is nice, the base stands out for hitting both rich roasted malt notes, adequate coffee and even a slight nod to silkiness at the same time.

Taste imparts plenty of coffee and chocolate malt notes. It isn't the biggest coffee beer in the coffee arms race, but it is good and that is more important. Mouthfeel remains dedicated to the smooth component, not sacrificing bitterness or roastiness but still pushing the coffee onto the palate. Still carries the alcohol amazingly well. Ooof, do you ever get tired of people talking about oxidation on beers that aren't even a year old? Damn that word got overplayed to the point of being incorrectly used.

At some point you have to talk about diminishing returns, the base Abstraction is so damn near perfect, it becomes very difficult to improve upon it, much less even maintain its awesomeness once you start making changes. This is good, but I think the base was better, quite a rare statement.

16oz can dated 3/13/20.

Pours opaque black with a half inch head of brown. Retention and lacing are average. Dark roast coffee, bakers chocolate, milk balls, and vanilla in the nose. Full bodied with a chewy, tacky mouthfeel. Roasty and rich on the palate. Chocolate, espresso, black licorice. Finishes mostly dry with lingering coffee and chocolate.

Pours jet black with a finger of short lived light brown head. Aroma is super roasty with black patent and some lightly sweet chocolate; not very complex but I dig it. Taste of a like the aroma. Super roasty with what tastes like black patent malt. If there is coffee here it’s just coming across as a very dark roast, something like an Italian roast. Fills little sweet upfront but finish is more balanced. Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall a very tasty beer, much more enjoyable than I recall it being.

Pours a squid ink dark brown. No head retention to be seen. Smell of cola, perhaps this is oxidized. Yep, it's oxidized. No wonder this brewery says to drink fresh! For the sake of tasting notes, there's coffee, Dutch baker's chocolate, a little oat. I'm sure that right off the line, this would have been great, but you can't expect breweries to make beers that last anymore.

Pours a rich black, amazing nose inputs, wonderful blends that leaders to an amazing brew. 2018 can that I am not sure of the brew date but I just drank it today. 3/8/2020. If this aged I am sure glad it aged in my closet and not someone else’s. I must have had some fresher because I have only bought it on one of my few trips to Tree H. Wish I could remember what the fresher one tasted like. Oh well, guess I will have to make a trip back someday. . Certainly moved close to the top of my list of imperial stouts.

16 oz. can. Black body with a big mocha head that settles quickly. Smells of coffee, malt syrup, some roast. Tastes of coffee, roasted malt, milk chocolate. Sharp coffee and malt flavor. Very acidic. Medium heavy, but the acidity prevents it from being rich. It's fine.

A: dark, silky jet black color. Not light shows through. Super dark tan head

S: silky and rich. Dark chocolate , roasted malts, raw coffee beans, ground coffee beans, oak, vanilla, cola, umami, rich cocoa. This is luxurious and rich smelling

T: follows the nose. Dark and milk chocolate..super rich. Coffee beans, chocolate covered espresso beans, oak, roasted malts, toffee, and huge molasses. A hint of cola. More chocolate and toasty malts with a little bitterness. Awesome

M: heavy mouthfeel, sticky with medium carbonation

O: absolutely fantastic. Luxurious and decadent. Sweet, roasty, and coffee in here. A sipper for a cold day

16 oz can poured into a snifter. Appearance is pitch black with a tan head and lacing. Aroma and flavor are extremely coffee-forward, yet this is still incredibly well-balanced with vanilla, chocolate, and dark roasted malts. The 8.8% abv is very well-hidden. Possibly the best imperial coffee stout I've had.

Solid porter. Good beer for this style. Not sweet at all. Basically tastes like drinking a cocoa nub. Very dark, almost like a black cup of coffee in a beer.

16oz. can into Nightshift stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Nice looking beer. Nose is iced coffee with vanilla creamer. Hints of mocha, espresso, chocolate, chewy fudge and molasses too. Really aromatic. Beer opens iced coffee and espresso mixed with milk chocolate, molasses, vanilla and tobacco. Really creamy feel in the middle with an accented mocha finish. Delicious. Body is light to medium with moderate to low carbonation. A touch prickly on the palate and goes down accented with a bright finish. A little thin for my taste.

Really good iteration of Abstraction but somehow a touch thin on the feel.

Another Tree House Beer. This time it is an imperial porter. I have usually had IPA from this brewery. I am stoked to try this beer. The beer is 48 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The pour on the beer produced a one finger creamy dark tan head. The head has poor retention and left no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 36 dark oily brown. The beer has zero clarity.

The aromas in the beer are dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts, fire, smoke, molasses, toffee, caramel, stone fruit, oatmeal and earthy.

The flavors in the beer are espresso ( it is dominating in this beer), dark roasted malts, Mailliard, smoke, toffee, caramel, oatmeal, earthy and stone fruit.

The mouthfeel of the beer is dry and thin.

The body of the beer is medium, low carbonation, and a full finish.

The beer is awesome. I enjoy how they made this porter. It is a touch bitter from all the coffee. Good beer nonetheless.
