Super TreatSuper Treat
Notes: Super Treat is a riff on Treat utilizing even larger kettle and dry hop additions applied to a richer, denser base beer than Treat. It is intended to coax sweet hop candy flavors from a blend of citrus forward American hops paired with our house yeast. Saturated flavors of orange starburst, sweet tangerine, lychee, and unfiltered fresh squeezed orange juice play nicely with a gently carbonated body lending to a beer that is intensely enjoyable and eminently drinkable. Our house yeast provides juicy fruit gum and melon overtones throughout. It’s a Super Treat, indeed!

A- Tallboy into a snifter with a floury golden body and a two finger, thick and creamy white cap. Head retention is very good. Lacing is very plentiful and this one is a looker.

S- On the citrus side of the street with hints of stone and tropical fruits alongside that. Creamsicle is the first thing that comes to mind before leading into grapefruit, underripe stone fruits, peach, oranges, candied citrus, dank herbs and floral hop notes. A touch of bubble gum and soft tropical fruit like papaya in the end.

T- On the taste buds the brew leans towards those softer tropical fruits but also picks up some oniony and earthy hop notes as well. The candy notes are still present with orange pop, grapefruit and tangerine citrus opening up for bubble gum, melon, mint and berry hop notes. A touch powdery and raw but smoother than the recent anniversary beer. Moderately high sweetness and a touch of cereal hints.

MF- Creamy and luscious body. This is where Tree House really brings it compared to their competitors. The body is just incredibly soft and smooth even with a high level of carbonation. Ends with a clean herbal bitterness.

This brew really riffs on the softer tropical fruits and stone fruits with melon playing a key role alongside peach, mango and soft citrus like tangerine as well as floral and herbal hops. Takes the sweetness up a notch for an IPA but still balances things out with those flavors.

Pushing the IPA style to the outer edges of haze, no brewery is better equipped to test the brink of hops in this manner like Tree House Brewing. Imperial in status, full in flavor, even fuller in body, IPA drinkers of a decade ago wouldn't even recognize the extreme makeover that the brewery has given to the style.

Mouthwatering aromas of citrus fruit, candy, tropical fruit, orchard fruit and pastry seduce the nose while Super Treat pours a turbidly matte finish of pale taupe and gold. A slow and patient separation of beer from froth eventually floats a creamy meringue just ahead of a sweet pastry taste that hinges of taffy, simple syrups, cereal and honeysuckle.

As the session shifts toward the hops, a full and fruity exhibition plays out with tropical fruits first. Mango, apricot, papaya and pawpaw reached nearly banana cream status before the taste continues to shift citrusy. Sun kissed tangerine, mandarin orange and blood orange comes in a nearly sherbet type of tangy succulence while a followup of honeydew and light peach continue the hop and ester complexity. A mild mannered bitterness is hardly any contention to offset the incredible amount of fruit and the linger of pastry sweetness or breadiness.

Full in body, the beer is nearly cloying for an IPA. Its fade to a malty dry finish far outlasts the drinker's patience as a coat of cookie dough and fruit puree trail into a light spice of gin and botanicals with a pep of verbena, cedar and sassafras in a green tea accompaniment.

Consumed 9/1/19

A: Golden pale orange - even hazier than the typical Tree House beer, but not totally opaque - pours with a small, off-white head, retains a small collar, leaves some streaks of lacing

S: Lots of citrus, big notes of orange juice and candied citrus - tangerine - some herbal notes, dank hops - similarly candy-like tropical notes, with a lot of melon and some pineapple, mango - notes of fruit punch and some hard candy - Juicy Fruit gum - despite all of the references to candy I would not describe this as smelling sugary - fairly neutral malt base

T: A Tree House lollipop - loads of citrus, candied orange and tangerine - some floral citrus - herbal and dank notes - candied melon, hints of mango and pineapple - Juicy Fruit gum and notes of under-ripe peach, apricot - medium bitterness - some hop burn - fairly sweet overall, but it really is coming from the hops, not the pale, unexciting malts at the base - the 8%+ ABV is not totally hidden, at least to my palete

M: On the full side of medium, smooth if not a little sticky, low carbonation

O: Call me, so I can get it juicy for ya

Regretfully, I have not had the "standard" Treat, so I cannot fully evaluate the "super" nature of this beer. But yes, it does kind of taste like candy. They achieved their goal, but at what cost? I would definitely take most other Tree House IPAs over Super Treat's weird sweetness, but it's still quite good.

Canned on 6/4. Poured to Glass on 6/6.
A: Looks like a Peach Juice. Thin clouds and disappeared quickly.
S: Tangelin, peach, pineapple in front.
T: First sip remained Fluffy, light creaminess. Then Mango, pineapple and full of tropical fruits notes. Hop bitterness is quite sure but not to much strong. Balance is enjoyable.
O: Quite unique balanced IIPA. A little bit too sticky and sweet for me.
