On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a slightly hazy straw yellow, with a foamy one inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like light citrus, bready and crackery malt, soft cut grass, and tea.

The taste is similar- so drinkable. The hop character is complex- citrus, tea, grass, and a little bit of pine, with a sturdy crackery malt backbone.

This is light and super drinkable, with a soft pillowy mouthfeel, and a good level of carbonation.

I love a good zwickel, and this is a good zwickel. Dope lagers are always welcome.

Served on tap at Zum Schneider in Montauk, NY

A: Pours a lightly hazy pale yellow (with an almost greenish tint) in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a one and a half finger tall bright white head that reduces to a thin layer evenly covering the entire surface and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of grainy malts, yeast, and some lighter amounts of grassy hops.

T: Moderate flavors of bready and grainy malts along with some light elements of yeast. Very light notes of grassy hops lending light bitterness which does not linger.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Chewy.

O: Enjoyable and very easy to drink - definitely a sessionable beer and I would have no problem putting a couple of liters of this beer away. A very pleasant flavor that I find quite refreshing.

On-tap at Zum Schneider, Montauk, NY

A: The beer is slightly hazy light yellow in color (almost like a Berliner Weissbier, but yellower) and has a very slight amount of carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that gradually died down.
S: There are light aromas of yeast and grainy malts in the nose along with some hints of grassy hops.
T: The taste has a mix of flavors consisting of bready and grainy malts and yeast, which seems rather complex for a light-bodied lager.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit chewy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: As it is quite tasty and easy to drink, I would have no problem drinking more than one of these in a sitting.

Bottle into .2L glass at Lindenbrau. Part of a Bierverkostung.

A: One finger head with cream; hazy dark yellow colour.

Sm: Fresh malty scent. Very hoppy. Nutty.

T: Clean open to body of malt and hopped barley. Standard fare with notes from the nose; the nuts especially come through.

Mf: Crystal malt coarseness. Nice wetness for the style.

Dr: I could down it all night, and it hides its slightly above average ABV well.

this would be the first beer in your session. And a fantastic zesty yellow cloudy version. I've grown partial to this style over the last six months. It has the bright crisp quality of a good lager yeast beer. The german yeast is so nice. But the feel is the interesting part. This being a particularly brighter keller. Lemon zest and german yeast muted and broadened by a cloudy haze that makes something that should last half a second, the bitter floral kicker...expands. Then apples joe honey and pollen subdued in ding. The malt character is there in the mild wear away of the carbonation...just like a like honey comb. All sits of the balance of brisk and expanded finish.

A: Golden. Hazy. Good dollop of bright white froth atop. Nice head retention and great lacing.

S: The aroma is mainly malty, but tempered with some herbal, floral, and minor spicy hop notes. It's a touch sweetish, and just mildly yeasty.

T: The flavor follows suit, as normal. It's malty, as in clear malt character, without being over-done or full. It's got a standard gravity for a helles or Pils, but it expresses the malt flavor quite clearly. The hop flavor backs that up in a firm way without really stepping forward, and the bitterness is also very well-combined - everything is present and noticeable, but they all tie together into one seamless flavor and aroma unless you look a little deeper to find them.

M: In the mouth it's quite smooth, probably due in part to the yeastiness, and also due to a lower, softer carbonation level.

D: Overall, it's a really drinkable, almost magical beer. It's just a hair away from becoming completely balanced and OH-SO-QUAFFABLE! Nicely done! Worth seeking out.

Well, this is seven years later, but I also drank this at the Lindenbräu in Berlin and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Todd. (Slightly intimidating, being the second person to review this.)

It wasn't particularly hazy (and there was lots of visible carbonation), and although the lacing was pretty sticky, I expect my Zwickls to be hazy, so I have to mark it down for that. The smell was predominantly biscuity, and the taste was mineral with lemon rinds and wheat, lots of wheat. The hops were hard to find, though, and overall I thought it was a weak offering, not as distinct as some of the other Zwickls I've tried.

The mouthfeel was creamy and it went down easy enough, but I didn't get excited about it, and even my dad was a bit bored by it. I wonder if they've tinkered with the recipe at all over the past years--it felt like a cleaned-up-and-commercialized Zwickl.

Standard guest beer at the Lindenbräu in Berlin, part of my Bierverkostung (beer sampler). On-tap.

Presented as a hazy, straw yellow beer with a never ending creamy, tight white lace. Plenty of stickin' to the glass.

Distinct mineral / metallic character, followed by a wonderful herbal hop flavour and lime-rind ... all of which melds with a light malt sweetness -- tea-ish and dextriny. Light fruitiness, sort of banana-ish actually, and smooth. Raw edges. Fading finish.

An interesting offering. An unfiltered beer, very much like some kellerbiers that I've tried. Outstanding! Full of raw goodness!
