The colour is deep, deep brown-red (100 EBC). The liquid is clear. The three finger head is compact and warm brown. It sinks down to a thick lid leaving no lacing.
Roasted and burned flavours dominates the smell; lots of pumpernickel bread. Some black malt sourness, smooth clean bitterness. Hints of dried flowers and liquorice. The smell makes me think “stout” rather than “porter”.
The taste is burned and roasted. Very low sweetness. There are clean bitter notes, but the malt dominates completely. Pumpernickel, burned rubber, charcoal, bitter dark chocolate and a hint of black coffee. Light to medium body. The light aftertaste is smooth with roasted black flavours, hints of wood and dried fruits. Hints of chocolate and sweet liquorice in the finish.
The carbonation is medium strong; the mid-sized bubbles mild and long-lived. The liquid is light and a bit dry.
A highly drinkable and balanced english porter. I like.
