Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Unbowed and unrepentant, this free spirit makes no apologies and asks for no forgiveness. Infidel is an imperial Belgian style IPA that set the standard for the style. Its rich satisfying flavor of spicy citrus, pine and grassy earthiness are carried by a malt bill and abv big enough to run with it.

A - Medium amber hue with thin, dense lacing and light carbonation.

S - Belgian candy sugar malt, citrus, all with some mild spiciness. Nose overall is on the lighter side.

T - Sweet malt throughout, some citrus, light spiciness, light pine bitterness on the back end, some woodiness, and some alcohol presence. There's an off-flavor that I can't pinpoint.

M - Thick medium body with gentle carbonation on the tongue.

O - Glad to have the opportunity to try this beer, wouldn't buy it again. (Unfortunately.)

Enjoyed this Belgian IPA in a large Piraat tulip. A burnt gold color shows the maltiness, but it's still pretty light mouthfeel in the digestible style of the Belgians, with an equally frothy head. Smell is fruity esters and hoppy, herbal and citrus. Taste is similarly hoppy and estery, but the hops are more continental, with a herbal finish that is just of touch sour / over-ripe fruit. Not the cleanest finish, but overall, as a fan of fruity belgian yeasts, complimented with a biere de garde malt base, it's a nice hoppy spin on a farmhouse.

For a split second I thought this was the big fruity flavor of Mosaic or Nelson Sauvin hops-- but then it turns into some kind of spoiled fruit juice. It even has the suspicious carbonation of bad fruit. Aroma is indescribable. Is there such a thing as a metallic smell?

Well, this could be spoiled though it doesn't quite have the usual bitter-nasty bacterial taste. But as a warning to others, I bought this at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.

A good Belgian IPA. I would love to try this dry hopped.

22oz bomber

A — Pours a deep orange hued amber into the glass, some ruby edges to it. Puffy, khaki colored head sits on top and forms a little bit of lace along the inside of the glass.

S — Smells of bitter piney hops briefly, but it then is dominated by yeast and esters. Little bit spicy.

T — Tastes of citrus, piney, then quite grassy and earthy hop character. Big sweet malty balance dominates everything else though, little bit of a spicy yeast character as well.

M — Medium-full bodied, alcohol is well hidden.

O — Alright overall, borderline unbalanced.

eyes...
3 bold fingers of head even on an easy pour, more bubbles than people in Idaho are bubbling up (as bubbles do) from the bottom, really craggy head with super lacing, orange hue with a clear disposition, a really nice looking beer

nose...
dark honey coated pine, a bit sweet and flowery, kind of strange, not much to it.

taste etc...
bright carbonation as you would expect from the visual presentation, sweetness comes in a bit too much and then is "offset" by bitterness... it all seems a mess to me, the two
dominant flavors are clashing rather than melding, you get some of that yeasty belgian
thing going but the bitterness just works against it.

Verdict?
not for this guy (using thumbs to point to self which is sort of an ancient selfie)
