Watery, unimaginative, fake-caramel taste. Truly a run-of-the-mill brew.

Pours a clear, brown color. 1/5 inch head of an off-white color. Poor retention and poor lacing. Smells of sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, hint of hops, and a hint of yeast. Fits the style of an American Brown Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of caramel malt, hint of nut, and slight hops. Overall, not bad, but average at best.

Draft, nonic pint

A – Deep brown but still clear. About an inch of khaki foam, which has fairly long retention, about a centimeter lingering for several minutes.

S – Rich bread crust, very prominent. Clean, almost lager-like. Hops are light, herbal, and slightly woodsy. A bit of caramel. Slightly caramel, but not off-putting.

T – Again, very prominent bread crust with some caramel malt. Hops are subdued, herbal and a touch of floral. Moderate hop bitterness. Also some metallic flavor, still not quite off-putting but not entirely pleasant.

M – Moderate carbonation with a medium-light body. Moderate hop bite. Mostly dry to very dry, especially on this finish.

O – This beer has a lot going for it, but the metallic aroma and flavor appears to be a flaw. Otherwise a fairly clean, easy drinking beer.

Fossil Cove La Brea Brown

A: Dark brown with a slight red hue. Medium white head.

S: Malty with molasses.

T/M: Fairly sweet with a hint of coffee on the finish. Has what is seemingly the trademark of this brewery, a strong bread finish. Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: A very good beer for a young brewery. I have had the pleasure of having this beer several times and have enjoyed it every time.

One of my go-to's in Fay-town. Pours a deep amber-brown, see through with a very small, off white head. Smells like a caramel apple, quite sweet but not overly much so. The taste is light, dominantly sweet, with apples showing up again, and a bit of plum or some other dark fruit. A bit of a hop character that lingers just a bit at the end. An interesting take on the style. Still smooth and somewhat malty, but that fruitiness sets it apart. Perfect mouthfeel, medium with medium to light carbonation. Overall, this is a very solid Brown that might be a bit too sweet for some, but suits my palate perfectly.

Pours out to a flat head that goes away (bad pour or dirty glass?) and cola-like color. Aroma is coffee, toffee, toasted malt, and hints of smoke and vanilla. Flavor is toasty, roasty and a tad bit chocolately with some fruit esters and higher alcohols lurking about. Mouthfeel is smooth and comfortable. Overall a very tasty and assertive brown.
