Notes / Commercial Description:
After an extensive 3 minute Google search, the results are conclusive: We have brewed The Lightest Beer In Canada (that isn't non-alcoholic)! This bright light ale presents hop flavours and aromas without being bitter, and tastes extremely refreshing. A new style of beer for us, this uber light ale is proof that good things come in small packages.

A: Straw coloured with a fairly thin head that lingers around awhile in the form of a ring. A bit of stringy lacing as this recedes.

S: Citrus, orange, mango, lighter grains, solid mix of spices, sweeter toffee, and a solid buttered bread structure to this. Was not expecting this much aroma- in terms of variety and intenseness- I’m impressed.

T: Cereal grains, light and refreshing lemon and grapefruit, subdued spices including cloves, and nice floral qualities are shining through. This has a sharp level of hops that are definitely noticeable and leave a very slight bitterness behind.

M: Light bodied with a mod-high carbonation. Semi-slick with a fizzy mouthfeel.

D: This is obviously easy-drinking but it has some good attributes including a huge aroma and a nice hop presence.

Bottle: Poured a yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma of light cereal notes with light citrus undertones is pleasant enough. Taste is also dominated by light cereal notes with nice citrus hoppy notes. Body is light with good carbonation. Nice mix of low alcohol beer with nice hoppy punch.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden color to it. It has a nice thick white head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of citrus, grapefruit, lemon and some grainy malts in the back.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has citrus, grapefruit, some light grassy hops and grainy malts.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a light and watery overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by decent flavors and aromas but the body is too light.

This one lives up to what it's trying to be, a light session ale. With that in mind what you get is a light beer packed with a really nice nose and some great flavour with a desirable mouthfeel. Definitely a brew you could session all day.

From previous reviews it seems that they may have further refined this brew.

EDIT: I have had this beer many times since my first taste/review. It has grown on me remarkably. Rather than finding it excellent for "what it is", I think it is just a straight-up very good beer. Flavourful and very refreshing, The fact that it is so low in alcohol is just a huge bonus. One of the unsung gems of the Bellwoods' lineup.

Bottled December 12, 2013.

Beer is a slightly cloudy golden colour. Medium-sized white head, fades steadily.

Nose contains a nice citrus aroma, grapefruit and lemon.

Taste is very light, but more flavourful than one would expect from a beer this lite! Grapefruit and lemon again, not much more than that. No real malt flavour. A bit of a soapy aftertaste. Hops are the entire focus of the beer, but it is by no means a hop monster- just very easy drinking.

Light bodied, moderate to high carbonation level. Super refreshing.

For a 2.3% beer, I am impressed. Much more flavour than I expected. This is definitely a beer that has to be tasted and reviewed in context. It is obviously not an American IPA, or an APA. It is a lite ale/session ale/whatever. For what it is, it is excellent. A great session beer for sure. I hope it is brewed again in the summer, because this would be great for an all day, backyard/cottage/deck/patio/park session.
