Notes / Commercial Description:
Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

MOSAIC: The Monogamy to trump all other Monogamies. Mosaic moved on the Bellwoods scene in early January 2014, winning us over with its great bittering capabilities, floral and earthy notes, and unique dank blueberry aromas.

Slightly hazy yellow color with white head. Aroma is dank, citrusy and fruity. Taste follows with dank hops and juicy citrus fruits. Really easy to drink, light bodied and crisp.

Fresh bottle from the brewery.

A - Translucent medium yellow/orange colour with half a finger of off-white head.

S - Tropical fruit, a musky/dank aroma and a touch of caramel sweetness. Pineapple, peach, mango and pine notes are all present.

T - Moderate bitterness for the style accompanies a fresh tropical fruit, pine and musky/dank flavour. Peach, mango, pineapple and a touch of pine with the slightest caramel sweetness in the background.

M - Light to medium body. Somewhat dry. Oily at times. Light carbonation.

Beer is cloudy orange in colour- marmalade. Moderately-sized white head. Solid Good retention.

Nice hoppy nose. Damp tropical fruits mixed with weedy notes (the dampness).

Taste is hop-focused, of course. Strong fruit flavours, mainly tropical, along with some piney weedy flavours. Moderate bitterness. The malt base has a bit of caramel and a slight sweetness.

Medium bodied, strongly carbonated. A bit spicy.

Overall, quite good. One of the stronger entries in the series, in my view, but not the best.

Pours hazed orange with a crackly offwhite head that starts huge and lasts about half the glass. Huge fruity aroma, lots of citrus and tropical fruit. Canned peaches, guava and lemon hop flavors dominate the flavor. A bready malt balast and a wisp of toffee provide balance. The mouthfeel is lusciously creamy with a medium body. The finish is moderately bitter and long lasting with lots of residual fruit flavors from the great hop variety.

This is an excellent single hop ale. Hop forward with lots of hop complexity. Juicy and delicious like all this brewery's pale ales.

Served in my Alchemist pint glass. Bottle from the brewery.

A - A generous two fingers of white foam lazily settles to chunky lacing. Transparent golden body with slow-moving tiny bubbles. Great looking pale ale.

S - Unsurprisingly, it is redolent in Mosaic hop aromas. Blueberry, guava, passion fruit, mango - super fruity and juicy. There's a bit of dank weed and earthiness in the periphery, but this is a straight up tropical bonanza. A hint of sugary malt supports things.

T - The taste isn't quite as exceptional. It starts heavy on passion fruit and zesty herbs but gives way to a bready and yeasty malt backdrop. Bitterness is on the lower side of moderate. Less sweet and a tad spicy. Gets a bit fruitier as it warms. No obvious alcohol.

M - Soft, pleasant, moderate carbonation. Medium-bodied, with a dry finish and lingering oils on the palate. No perceptible booze.

D - Really nice stuff. Downed a 500ml bottle while decompressing after a long day at work. Glad I bought a four-pack of this one, and wish it was year-round as opposed to occasional. Love me them Mosaic hops. My favorite in the series, and part of an upward trend.

Pours a golden orange colour, just over a finger of white head and some lace. Smell is mostly tropical fruit, hoppy throughout and just a suggestion of malt like the rest of the series. Taste follows the nose with tropical fruit, some pineapple and fleshy mango, big hop flavour and lighter on the bitterness than the majority of the Monogamy series, dry in the finish with a lingering fruit aftertaste. Lightly carbonated, medium body. Good and pretty enjoyable, somewhere in the upper-middle pack of Monogamy beers.
