Notes / Commercial Description:
Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

CENTENNIAL: Refreshing grassy hop bitterness with subtle floral and tropical fruit notes.

This is a wet-hopped version of the Monogamy (Centennial). It is otherwise identical, I believe. To my tastebuds, the two are not remarkably different. The finish and aftertaste on the wet hop is stronger, with notable pine and grassy flavours. Otherwise, the two are much the same - which is not a bad thing. This batch of Monogamy (Centennial) is much better than the first small batch done a year and a bit ago. Pine is strong, with grass and some citrus. The finish on the wet-hop version is a good addition. Always hard to judge these beers with so much time between them, but it struck me as one of the stronger entries in this series.

On-tap a Bellwoods. Served in a tulip.

A - Generous white foam settles to a thick collar, wisps on top, and plenty of lace. Lightly hazed golden orange body.

S - Orange creamsicle, with some herbal, leafy notes too. Icing sugar and doughy malt backdrop. Pretty much what you'd expect from a wet-hopped Centennial pale ale.

T - The taste isn't quite as successful. There's more green, leafy notes, with some mild astringency lingering through the finish. Citrus character is more rind than flesh here, and malt is more bready. The reduced sweetness makes the flavor integration more awkward than in the aroma. The flavors aren't unexpected ones, but for some reason that's hard to articulate it just doesn't work as well as the aroma.

M - Medium-light body, moderate-to-lower carbonation, and a dry finish. No obvious alcohol, as you'd expect.

D - A solid, wet-hopped pale ale, with which I have a few minor quibbles. I'll have to try some other beers in this series to see if the problems are systemic or merely related to this crop of wet hops. Still, pretty drinkable stuff.
