Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The new double IPA you’ll notice in the bottle shop is called “Trials and Tribulations”. We had intended to brew Witchshark, but were caught at the last minute without some key ingredients. We still wanted to create a hoppy DIPA, we wanted to experiment with the new 2014 hop crops that just arrived, and the resulting beer is light in body (for a double IPA), characterized by flavours of peach and orange zest. The name stems from the curve balls that ultimately get thrown your way in a small brewery (just like frozen sanitizer)!

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Hazed golden orange colour, 1.5 fingers of white head, some lace. Smell is heavy on the dank hops pine with an understated tropical fruit in the periphery, there is just a hint of malt at times but this is mostly a dank weedy-hoppy affair. Taste is quite bitter and hoppy out front, earthy and piney and again like the nose quite dank, a very lean malt profile with a touch of mid palate sweetness, before finishing dry and dank with an almost chalky/raw hop pellet/dank weed flavour. Light-dry carbonation, medium full body and quite resinous, initially I found the mouthfeel to be quite nice but after a while the heavy resin made it a bit off putting. Overall for a beer that Bellwoods had no real intention to make its decent, but a far cry from some of their better hoppy offerings, while not a disaster it is a rare miss from these guys.

For me, the strongest hop in this DIPA is Simcoe. It is very present in the nose, resulting in a very herbal, weedy scent. The taste is similar, although there is a good dose of citrus fruit in there as well. The fruit has a relatively bright flavour, but overall it is a fairly dank tasting beer. I am typically a fan of SImcoe-heavy beers, but this one is a tad messy. Not bad, unfortunately not up to the level of Witchshark or Boogie Monster.
